Van Halen: Remastered Concert Footage Now Online

By: Ann Casano - April 5, 2014

The year was 1978. Brothers Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen teamed up with vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony, and the history of rock music was about to change forever. That was the same year that Van Halen would release their self-titled debut album which featured the hit Runnin with the Devil and Eddie’s epic guitar solo Eruption.

Since that time, we’ve seen Van Halen lead singers come and go. We’ve also heard more about in-band fighting than original music.

Although fans will most likely never get a new Van Halen album that sounds as good as the classics, new upgraded concert footage of the band from Fresno, California is now available to view online, for free. You can check out a slew of clips by clicking here. The two shows are from 1978 and 1979 during the Selland Arena concerts, a part of Van Halen’s first two world tours. The footage is completely and meticulously remastered frame by frame in HD.

You can hear tunes like On Fire, Bottoms Up, and Light Up The Sky. Yes, the concerts have been available on the web for years. However, the current clips are all excellent quality and taken directly from the original recordings.

David Lee Roth rejoined Van Halen back in September of 2013. Eddie’s son Wolfgang has taken over bass duties. The band is reportedly working on a new album of original music. It would be Van Halen’s 13th studio album. According to the Pulse of Radio, Roth told Jim Florentine this past February, “I was up at Edward’s house three days ago, and we’re starting to put music together. We’re writing; I write lyrics routinely and the band plays together routinely, at least three times a week up at Ed’s place.”

No official release date for the album has been set.

This just reminds me that I’m old.

    • MAYHEM

but you, we still luv it

  • Lbowa2

When Van Halen WAS Van Halen with Eddie, Alex, Diamond Dave and Mikey. :( Makes me happy and sad at the same time.

  • James Carraway

With Dave losing his range and Wolf on bass there is not much left for these guys. It is a shame that Eddie is too stupid to not bring Michael Anthony back into the band since he added so much as a bass player and vocals. Just another has been band with Wolfy.

    • Joel O’Donnell

They need Sammy Hagar back also.

      • MAYHEM

        LOLOL……….thats a joke right?

        • David Heyd

Not really cause they never had a # song until Sammy Joined.

          • Sammy

yep “# songs” how do you know when its love, or why cant this be love, or when love walks in….. Really, a bunch of top ten mushy loves songs, with ridiculous lyric’s. You know, One Direction has had more #s as well….

He did nothing more than screw up the legacy, of what was one of the best American hard rock bands in history. Thank god, his kid woke him up out of his drug induced comma.

I wonder how many top #s Led Zep had?

          • David Heyd

            Poundcake…ya a mushy love song,The seventh seal…ya so mushy…go home jerk.

          • David Heyd

Oh and now its David Lee Rot now.

          • David Heyd

And Eddie is now even more messed up then before.I heard he has sclerosis of the Liver….not long to live.

          • JW

that means absolutely nothing!!! You probably think 1 direction is awsome!!!

          • Thor

What? Try again…”JUMP!” was a #1 song….The VH catalog with Dave has sold 3 times more overall than Sammy stuff.

Sammy did have #1 albums with VH tho…

        • David Heyd

And MAYHEM, you need to put your flip flops back on,your spandex pants…..If you can get them on, Roll a fat joint and put on them huge headphones I know you have, put on the first VH album….not CD and chill bro.I used to love DLR on the first album but by the time Jump came out I was so sick of DLR.Sammy brang in a fresh sound that everyone was looking for and as of today??? DLR is a joke.I went to a David and Sammy show.We waited and waited cause Dave was suppose to open but I guess he was in his dressing roon pouting cause he wanted to close. So after a 90 minute delay while Sammy’s crew moves out Daves equipment and got Sammy’s on Sammy came out and played for over 2 hours and kicked ass.Dave got boo d when he stepped on stage…played for 45 minutes and walked off the stage.Thats when I knew he just needed to stay home for now on.

Wolf is one of the hottest bass players on the planet right now, and he brings new fans around.

In case you didn’t know, it was Wolf that pushed Ed to reunite with Roth and make a new album in 2012, and another in the works now. When Mark Tremonti called, he learned his entire tour setlist overnight and was onstage the next day. He really is a special musician.

Everyone wants Mike back, but it isn’t going to happen, most likely ever, and definitely not in the immediate future.

You’re only options are – VH with Wolf, or no VH.

      • Dan Miller

I posted this on here, but meant to direct it to you.And I’m not being an asshole or anything, so don’t take it personal: “Wolf” is one of the hottest bass players on the planet now??? I don’t know what planet you’re on, but it sure as Hell ain’t Earth!!! Evidently you’re not a musician. I started playing guitar at age 8, thinking Ace Frehley of KISS was the greatest guitar player until “Eruption” erupted through my stereo. I’m a die-hard VH fan, and have been guilty of “borrowing” a lot from Eddie, like about every other guitarist my age (40). But Wolf is average at best. It doesn’t matter if he pushed Ed or not. I’m addressing your comment about his playing. If VH REALLY wants to give their fans (those of us that have stuck with ’em through it all), they’ll drop the ego bullshit and get Mikey back in the band. If nothing more than one last THANK YOU WORLD TOUR!!! Sammy is not to blame for any of the shit that happened. Neither is Gary Cherone as far as that goes. It’s time to grow up and get the f*ck over it!!! VH are all basically 60-yr old men. Wolf is 22. Let him do his thing with Tremonti or whatever, and if for no other reason, the fans that got screwed outta the second half of the tour (when they were too burned out, but went to Japan), deserve it, and the $$$ they could make off an all original VH tour would be record setting. Life is too short for the silly “he said, no he said” crap. Ed survived severe alcoholism and drug probelms (as did I), cancer, and diverticullitis. Be thankful for that, and show thanks for the fans by giving them the one thing we all want.

        • http://adultfriendfinder.com/profile/bridgette4fun?site=ffadult&session_send=f3b7cb277b3a33154295b884939d054d465be#tmpl_profile? Bridgette

Ed wants the band to continue on after he’s gone. Wolf isn’t going anywhere.

        • disqus_ffJw1TiF6G

Wow Dan! Very well said. I like you and Ed and a lot of others have been through the wringer and came out ok. I like you been with this band through all of the DRAMA and feel as well that Ed must let bygones be that, BYGONES! Get Mikey back in the band even if it is for a final tour and right the wrong that has been done to us fans. Because of Ed’s issue’s it has affected this band for YEARS. I love the guy but it is time for Ed to look into the mirror and realize HE is the reason why there were 3 singers and now 2 bass players in the band. I hope before all is said and done that Ed comes to terms with any and all issues he had with Both Dave and Mikey and just once forgive and forget and gives us all what we been deprived of for years, The REAL VAN HALEN! Hey Ed, you can not look ahead if you keep looking in the past!

        • Thor

Have you listened to the new album?? By far the best bass playing of ANY VH album…

He doesnt have the back-up sing chops but Wolf is a VAN HALEN and his musical chops speak for themselves.

          Get over it.

      • Shawn

Come on Bridgette, it’s not like we’re talking about learning Zappa here. It’s freakin Mark Tremonti. I’m surprised it took him all day to learn that Drop D drivel.

        • http://adultfriendfinder.com/profile/bridgette4fun?site=ffadult&session_send=f3b7cb277b3a33154295b884939d054d465be#tmpl_profile? Bridgette

Wow, really? You’ve got to hate on Tremonti to root for Mike? Wha..?

    • Stay Frosty

You’re waaaay off man. The band put together a great album and tour with A Different Kind of Truth from 2012 to 2013. Mind you, it’s 35 years later so what do you expect? by the way, Wolf is twice the bass player Mike is as Mike is twice the singer Wolf is. “2 thirds inevitable, 1 third original …

      • Dan Miller

It isn’t about whether Wolf or Mike is the better bass player. It’s about the original 4 that turned the world of rock music upside down. I’m in agreement as far as Mikey not being an outstanding bass player. He did a good job, but his vocal harmonies and high notes were a HUGE part of the VH sound. He was there at the beginning, and given their ages and lifestyles until recent fairly recently, I doubt they’ll be recording and touring for very many more years. So put the insignificant crap behind you Ed, and reunite the band that took you, and the boys from backyard parties and gigs at Gazzarri’s, to the greatest rock band ever!!! I’m probably one of the biggest EVH fans on the planet, but get over it and get on with it. Be above it for God’s sake. You’ll be 60 next year. Jr. High was over about 45 years ago Edward.

        • Stay Frosty

I like your reply, I do. But the past with Ed comes with baggage and because Sam is a shithead Dave is back. Mike on the other hand is S.O.L. because the legendary guitarists son happens to inspire him and renew his interest in his craft. So that being said i don’t hold out that Mikey can even come back as a hired musician; which is what he was for the last few years in VH. peace.

          • http://adultfriendfinder.com/profile/bridgette4fun?site=ffadult&session_send=f3b7cb277b3a33154295b884939d054d465be#tmpl_profile? Bridgette

I remember the first time I read that Mike and Sam both were hired for the last tour. Shocked me. Really opened my eyes to Ed’s…..other side/inner demons/issues, Immediately felt for Mike. The only innocent in the whole damned mess. Well, he and Wolf.

The only way Mike comes back is if Wolf presses for it, which isn’t out of the realm, is it? He’s a good guy. He knows how the fans feel. Finish the album they’re, (hopefully), recording now, tour, then take a break and make a great album with Mark. Or, better yet, move over to 2nd guitar. I’ve said from the beginning that that would make a great tour. Those dubbed songs that Ed makes sound great live, would sound awesome with Wolf, or Ed, rocking the rhythm lines. Ed has always said Wolfie is hot on guitar, let’s hear it!

            That’s the best solution, imo.

          • Dan Miller

A big part of A.A. or any type of addiction recover is making amends with your past, and the people in it. It’s not so much about whether somebody you hurt forgiving you or not, but about being able to forgive yourself and let loose of any baggage, or whatever happened before. To Hell with Sammy, it’s not about Sammy. It’s about Ed letting go of “whatever” really happened and continue on on from today forward. Which he has, to a point. The anger/resentment is still there, and my question is why? Let it go Ed. You and Sammy were best friends for a lot of years, and made some great music together. He didn’t bang Valerie behind your back (that we know of), so fuck it. Whether Mikey was a “hired musician” or not, he WAS 1/4 of Van Halen, and you couldn’t have had any other 4 guys ever do what they did. I’m glad his son inspires him, and will carry the Van Halen music on when Ed and Al pass the torch. But for us, the fans, or a lot of us anyway, would give just about anything so see the 100% original. You hanging on to hatred or whatever against Mikey or Sammy is selfish. If the music was truly for the VH fans all over the world, you’d be a bigger, and a very professional dude and say fuck it. Let’s bury the past, and go put on a U.S. Tour, or World Tour, and say hey, we did this for all of you!!!

      • Thor

Sorry- you got it backwards- its 3 parts original- one part inevitable :)

        • Stay Frosty

          I stand corrected, thanks Thor!

  • Joel O’Donnell

Be sure to release footage from Sammy Hagar with them and the first tour also. That way everyone can see that Hagar is just as good now as he was back in 1986. This footage of Dave is probably decent, but he can NOT sing as good as he was back in the day. And He will never be as good as Hagar so compare the 2 with old and new footage.

Even Sam says his voice isn’t what it used to be, you sound more like a worshiper than a fan.

      • disqus_ffJw1TiF6G

A good friend of mine who is a HUGE Sammy Supporter said Sammy is shot. He said he put on so much weight and is boozing it up on stage and that his voice sounded HORRIBLE. He said he noticed people in the crowd looking at each others responses to what they were seeing and hearing coming from Sammy.

        • http://adultfriendfinder.com/profile/bridgette4fun?site=ffadult&session_send=f3b7cb277b3a33154295b884939d054d465be#tmpl_profile? Bridgette

You know, Wolf said that he still goes to a voice coach, I wonder if they got Dave to see one too? There is a video on YT from Japan 2013 of Mean Street. Best live recording of Dave I’ve ever heard.

      • Joel O’Donnell

Yes very big fan and I know the difference between talent and washed up.

    • butyoumad

Yeah Sammy was cool as idont know what..but Sammy was way better when he sang solo..and when he was with Montrose. But personally, I didn’t care for Sammy in VH because he sang too many lovey-dovey songs. That’s my opinion.

      • Joel O’Donnell

He was putting lyrics to Eddies music of lovey dovey songs that Dave will never be able to do.

    • MAYHEM

really? how about you pull your head out of your …….

  • David Heyd

And that DLR is one egomaniac weird dude.Ive seen some of the stuff he did on his own which has nothing to do with music and let me tell you.For a guy who was on acid,PCP and alcohol at the same time….this guy appears strange.I don’t see it working ever. His time has come and gone along time ago…his diamond aura is just plain carbon once again.HE IS A JOKE

    • MAYHEM

we all think YOU are the joke for that dumb asz comment

      • David Heyd

who is WE idiot. he is a has been and a joke on his very own videos of him at his house/When they toured the Dave and Sammy show, Dave only did half the shows.Plus he sounded like crap I know I was there.

      • butyoumad

        lmao.

  • Aaron Manderscheid

Daves voice could be surgically repaired who knows it might have already been done ? And even though Sammy is a better pure singer VH isnt a Hard Rock band with Sam they are pop !! Daves stage presence alone makes him a better VH front man and they can also make him sound like old Dave in the studio these days with all the programs that are used as for the concerts who cares as long as hes in key its a rock concert few singers sound as good live as they do on record DAVE FOR PRESIDENT LOL

    • Joel O’Donnell

Do ya have 5150? Listen to good enough, get up, summer nights. How about OU812? Listen to AFU naturally wired, black and blue, source of infection, and sucker in a 3 piece. How about FUCK. Listen to pound cake, judgement day, runaround, man on a mission, top of the world. How about Balance? Listen to Amsterdam and big fat money. Do ya actually think this is pop music, or are ya deaf.

      • Aaron Manderscheid

I said Sammy is a better pure singer , wouldnt waste my cash buying any of the Van Hagar records thats my choice your not gonna change my mind or anyone elses on here who just prefer Dave . Atomic Punk , Mean Street ,Im on Fire, better less produced sounding records u have ur opinion I got mine Deal with it dude !! Your not the Van Halen police on a side note
I like all of Sammys solo records own most of them so listen to what ever version u like and just enjoy the Music WOW ??????

  • Dan Miller

NO David Lee Roth rejoined Van Halen Back in 2007 and has been back since then

  • Hotcupoftruth

While VH with Sammy churned out a few radio hits – mainly Eddie-synthesizer-dominant love songs…Van Hagar was NOT the balls out Van Halen arena rock we all listened and rocked to. I’d prefer Michael came back, but I’ll take Wolfie in a concert setting as long as it is Dave, Eddie and Alex, too. I like the Red Rocker’s solo stuff.

    • Joel O’Donnell

The name never changed dumb ass stop calling it Van Hagar.

    • Joel O’Donnell

Read what I replied to Aaron Manderschied and tell me this is not balls out Van Halen arena rock.

  • Drew

This is complete garbage. Fuzzy shots, bad sound. Don’t waste your time. The available footage of the US Festival show is far superior.

  • Caligula

Their last “album” was awesome! They just released the worst song on the album first, and set a bad tone for the whole thing.

  • Bulldog

THis Just IN……..WHO GIVES A SHIT!!!!

  • Bill

Van Halen is not Van Halen until Mike Is back with them. The sound of Van Halen is D.L.R with the backing of Eddie and especially Mike with the high pitch sound he has…it just makes the sound you are use to on their Primal early albums….AKA their true sound!!!!! I am 45 and VH and women are children first are the best Rock I have ever heard….And it was Eddie, Dave and Mike pumping out the Vocals with Alex pounding the skins…Michael needs to come home and Van Halen will be true again.
Wanna see that Jack bass and hear that M.A. sound backing Dave and Eddie. Sorry to the wolfman although Van Halen by name and Dad is sure good to him but Michael is Van Halen not Wolfie…..BRING BACK MIKE!!!!!!!

  • Tink

The acticle is incorrect DLR was back in the band in 2007 I saw them Ed, Alex, Wolf and DLR that year in concert. As far as Michael coming back in the band, it probably will not happen. I am just happy they are together will Dave. I will take the current line up as its better than no VH at all. The glory days of the original band are gone, I am just happy I got to be a part of it. And that I got to meet and hang out with all of them back then.
