Unemployment Benefits Extension Could Be Postponed

On Wednesday, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said that the proposition to continue long-term unemployment benefits “is simply unworkable” when questioned about the potential to offer benefits for the beginning five-month lapse of 2014 and stretching retroactively all the way back until December 29, 2013. Reports claim that the Senate is expected to vote on legislation to accommodate the extension of jobless benefits within the foreseeable future; however, debates are already raging regarding the issue.

According to a statement released by Speaker Boehner, “There is no evidence that the bill being rammed through the Senate by Leader Reid meets that test, and according to these state directors, the bill is also simply unworkable.”

Adam Jentleson, who is the spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, does not think that considerations to reach a compromise should be ignored. “It is hard to imagine Speaker Boehner simply walking away from the thousands of people in Ohio who lost their jobs through no fault of their own and need this lifeline to make ends meet while they continue to look for work,” Jentleson explained.

The National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) has expressed concern that the implementation phase could prove to be a complicated process even if the legislation is approved. There could be a significant delay before checks are submitted to unemployed, which may extend beyond the June 1 expiration date initially projected in the bill.

The NASWA sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that read as follows:

“The National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) has concerns with S. 2148, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2014. This legislation would temporarily reauthorize the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program until June 1, 2014, but would substantially increase the administrative burden on states.

NASWA does not have a position on whether to extend the EUC program because our member states hold varying positions on that question. However, NASWA wants you to know states have significant concerns about the implementation of this legislation.”

So the senate drags, and the people suffer. Hope they are enjoying “recess”……again.

  • Eric Matterson

This whole mess could have been avoided if they left UB alone in the first place.

  • Losingeverything

So take out the double dipping clause, then it would work? We need help not more time to lose everything?

  • huckleberry

Fact, keep giving out money and people will keep taking it. Fourty-seven percent of the workers are supporting the rest on a variety of programs including this one. Everyone knows someone that is doing this whether friend, family or aquaintance.

    • DJMiles

Fact, you should first hold a job long enough to qualify for unemployment before you post your stupid opinion on here.If your worried about government spending then post about the 900 billion dollar farm bill not the 9B extension of euc.If government didn’t put so many companies out of business we wouldn’t need to extend unemployment.

    • franklybetterme

This makes me ill, every time I read it. Its so self righteous and uncaring!
Number one, the people on unemployment extensions, or at this time NOT on them, myself included, are people with a history of work. We are wiling to work! We couldnt be on unemployment if we hadnt worked to qualify for it.
Number two, you make it sould like everything is just peachy trying to get by on 60% of normal income. My only response to that is TRY IT! Yes, its possible, and it would be possible for you as well, but that in no way makes it a good thing,
And finally, number three, do not forget that there are NO JOBS out there. Unemployment has been high since the end of the Bush administration, and while placing blame is fun, it doesnt help the situation. OK fine, I will play the game…My view is that Bush had a BIG ROLE in causing it, Obama has utterly failed to fix it. Therefore BOTH have a share of blame, and having said that, it changes NOTHING!

So get off the high horse! Be thankful that you are employed, and make sure you keep your job…job security does not exist anymore. And quit judging those of us who arent as lucky. Sheesh!

      • The Malone Family

        Well said!

      • franklybetterme

Here’s the thing…I am not totally opposed to the philosophy of throwing people in the deep end and forcing them to learn to swim…it works a suprisingly high percentage of the time.

However, in this case, its inappropriate for two reasons. The first reason is the folks on the unemployment extension already “know how to swim”, in other words, we have already been gainfully employed, and lost that employment through no fault of our own.

The second reason is, there’s no water in that “deep end” ! There are no jobs to be had. If there were, we would have seen a significant jump in the employment figures since the cut-off, as those unemployed who are no longer counted went out to get jobs. That hasnt happened.

So throwing us in the deep end by removing support and forcing a panic job hunt has just resulted in us falling to a concrete floor. People who are able and willing to work are having their lives destroyed…literally. Myself included.

  • living with unemployment

They keep talking about creating job s when they will need tax payer dollars to pay for those government jobs, they need to bring back our jobs that when they opened our borders many private sector jobs went to other countries because of the ridiculous amount of taxes they had to pay here also alot of people that lost jobs lately are a few years from retirement age ,tell me where are the jobs for those people, I would like to see mr.Bohener try to get out there and try to find a job at his age, its not that easy and how He would feel if the tax payers and people who help get him in office, tell him sorry no more money for you because you are not doing a good job or care about the american people.

  • Lbuggy65

This is the most inhumane of consequences for so many people!

  • dantae

Create the jobs and THEN cut EUC. There currently are ZERO jobs. These minimum wage paying part time temp gigs that give you just enough money to buy a loaf of bread and a roll of toilet paper a week shouldn’t be considered jobs/careers.

  • Homes 4 You

UNEMPLOYMENT DOES NOT CREATE JOBS >>> IT MAKES PEOPLE * LAZY * … After 6 months > unemployment should END… This will make people go out & get a job… Maybe not a job they like but a job… Then they can go look for a better one AS THEY ARE WORKING

    • Kevin Watson

Cant wait till you get laid off asshole !!!!!!!! Gonna laugh and hope you and your family ( if you have any )…..STARVE and SUFFER !!!!!

      • Kevin Watson

No….can tell by your screen name….your a Daddy’s boy…. never worked for a living… punk ass prick with everything given to you ! So….no….you suffer …if you have a family and a wife….I am sure she fucking other guys and raking you for security !!!! Still gonna laugh tho !!!!! PRICK !

      • Shawn

Pain and suffering is not the answer .. I hope you and your family don’t have to go through any of this . 46 year old been working since 15 I never seen it this bad . Never wish bad on our children . Never

        • Kevin Watson

We are going thru this….. first time out of work in 35 years !!!! And to have some prick make comments like that is disrespectful ! He needs to learn…. and if he has a family like I do…. they are going to suffer as well….. I really don’t wish it on his family….just him ! Maybe he will not post crap like that before he knows how it feels and have more understanding of REAL life !!!! No offense to you ! Just HIM !!!! He is kicking back and laughing at our pain & suffering….. Karma will get him !!!! Sorry……….he needs to actually FEEL and suffer just like we are….and he will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck Shawn !

          • Shawn

Good luck to you and the family friend

          • Cheri Henderson

Kevin, I am with you. I have said this since January – why aren’t people demonstrating in Washington over this issue – I am sure that thousands of people living in that state have been cut off also. WHY haven’t they been demonstrating over this. This is what Maria Shriver & Katie Couric suggest also. WHY is NO ONE doing it? That is the ONLY way we are going to get any results.

          • jay

No money to spend to get to DC and protest.

          • Cheri Henderson

Yes, but I would think there would be plenty of people up in that general area, that are in the same situation. Why aren’t they out there?? Also, why isn’t a leader, such as Al Sharpton, etc. being a voice for us. I wrote to him about this on his facebook – got no response. I just read that the residential population there is 581,530. Like I said I am positive many people up there are in the same boat. Why aren’t they demonstrating. Until they ‘take to the streets’ – nothing will be done. Katie Couric & Maria Shriber both said this back in January, are are still saying it.

          • virgil Mitchell

Cheri, it is easy to say, why aren’t they out there? Instead, we all should be out there. It isn’t easy when you are struggling
with next to nothing, no matter where you are located. MSNBC has allowed Ed Shultz to take the lead with this issue
and Ed continues to do a fantastic job for us all. Al has not neglected the issue either. Both men are representing us on multiple fronts. Neither one of them deserves ridicule or angst from anyone. They are and have been on the front line regarding too many of the issues affecting the less fortunate. They only deserve praise and support. Thanks and God Bless You…

          • Cheri Henderson

Thanks for the response Virgil and God Bless you also.

          • liz beth

With no money to pay my car payment it’s hard to go search for a job. I am 59 years old and worked since I was 16. I have sent my resume to dozens of recruitors.. I just can’t keep on. Selling my purses and jewelry. My husband is 70 and we have an 11 year old son . Please don’t tell me there’s no hope. I have paid my dues. 25 years as a nursing home administrator…. I have been a good person. I can’t hang on much longer.

          • Cheri Henderson

I know Elizabeth how devastating this is. I am going through the same thing. I am 62. I actually had to move into a friends house. I hope no one EVER votes for another Republican! What I’d like to know – and I have been wondering since January – why is no one in Washington demonstrating over this. I am sure there are plenty of people that live there that are going through this. Katy Couric & Maria Shriber said the same thing, that ‘people need to take to the streets’. NO ONE is doing anything! They demonstrate over everything else. My Mother keeps up on all politics. She said that aleady they have voted new Republicans in – in Florida. They won’t do anything unless people get out there and demonstrate.

        • UnemployedNow

I agree, Shawn. It’s really horrible out there and our government is ignoring us. It’s a shame. It’s also a shame we’re not marching on Washington to demand some type of action. Action. Yeah. They’re on Spring Break. Wish I could afford to not worry myself to death while on break.

          • Michelle

We cant demonstrate because we do not have the money for gas to go to Washington.

      • Dana

I agree with you. I hope he loses his job too.

    • Eddie Thomas

how about the people the have seasonal jobs ,that work half a year,do they not have the right to get their unemployment,….gtfoh… ky

      • Kevin Watson

Homes 4 You …alias ” to let me suck your cock for money ” is a money and “job” bred asshole….. Dad put him thru some school… learned to be a cock sucker…. got a job in real estate which is basically is a job if you already have money….. he is a prick and he will suffer !!!!

    • ginger

Unfair judgment!!! I personally applied 75 jobs-3 interviews. Nothing… I have worked since age 16. Oh well I guess I will just apply for government help instead-like food share etc. I paid in to euc. Why shouldn’t get $ entitled to me.

      • DJMiles

Don’t even wast your time replying to this idiot.

    • DJMiles

      Your a idiot

    • deebee1847

Do you only repeat what the John Bonhead says..

    • Cattle Herder

Industries have been decimated and offshored….doucheB… you even look like one….. wow. You call them lazy until you find yourself penniless… and it could easily happen. Hurricane Sandy rich folk owning 4 homes lost it all and have nothing now … you think it can’t happen to you? Mock God and have no mercy for your fellow man, and see what happens big shot!

      • whiteracistmale

this guys a douche no doubt about it and if he came to work with me he would tap out before lunch, I Lobe how this little prick can call a man lazy for getting laid off. I am a carpenter and believe me this little sissy couldn’t work half as hard as me

    • Bill

there are no jobs!!!! minimum wage.. part time. no benefits!!! .We need to cut government jobs. and pay them what their worth..7.50 per hr. they’d make about 300 a month..We don’t need a bunch of Morons sitting around thinking up new laws, and getting 10 times that of a working person!!!Stop letting so much junk products in our Country.. Overfilling the land fills.

    • STEVE

      REALLY DUDE

    • Kam53

Hey asshole…..my wife worked 40 years for an insurance company who decided to make major cuts and was let go. What did she get out of all the UE tax she paid? Three months. I wouldn’t call working 40 years LAZY you little prick.

    • nu2li

Are you kidding…? Walk for a minute or even a day in the shoes of those that have been unemployed and have been tirelessly searching for a JOB that will pay their bills and allow them to exist. No one wants to be on Unemployment – you ignorant moron – the majority of those on long term unemployment are highly skilled and are being passed over for those applicants that do not bring as much experience to the job, but can come in at a lower pay rate! Do you have any idea of how it feels to not be able to pay your bills; your rent/mortgage, tuition, to have enough money to pay to get to a potential job interview? With the Senate and House lockdown on this bill – it has created a subculture of those that are to the point of desperation and will fall into welfare and total government subsidies…In the meantime we keep hearing that the House and Senate are ‘working’ on pushing thru this bill – in the meantime they have taken ANOTHER week of for “RECESS” – and GET PAID for it…Just wait the next elections are going to be a reality check for those already in office

      • tucsongal

thanks for your statement…I am 64 and single..got laid off due to a company merger (buy out) and my job was out-sourced with the new company. I have sent out over 200 resumes, have cold called companies inquiring on any openings..on and on. I have not received one offer of a job….I really need that emergency unemployment benefit, I have worked for 40 years and paid my taxes..now I need help to keep me surviving alittle longer…

    • Kel Shelly

When you need unemployment the Republican Politicians are going to treat you the same. Obama was voted into office by struggling Republicans and the Republican Party will be voted out of office by Struggling Republicans. If you think millions of Republicans are not being effected by these cuts, put on the streets, etc, you’re more naive than anyone can imagine.

      • sammeria

The republican need to stop making us suffer because of the Obama healthcare bill suck it up the bill passed stop crying trying to make a reason about not enough money in the budget. The senate acting like a bunch of spoil brats that cant get their way I wish Obama could fire Bohener ass!

    • whiteracistmale

homes you sir are an idiot your opinion is based on nothing more than rhetoric

    • UnemployedNow

Homes 4 You, it does not sound like you’ve even been laid off; too old or over qualified to get those “jobs they do not like, but look as they work”. I am. This is my dilemma. I can waitress, tried; but it’s hard to find a place to hire a 50-year old waitress. I am a business analyst; but get turned down because they’re afraid I’ll quit when a higher paying job comes along. Well, EVERYTHING is a higher paying job because I have no income. I go to a Career Development Center. They have statistics that say the average person takes 1 to 1.5 years to find a job. Why then, does the unemployment I paid into for 25 years (yes, never laid off in nearly 30 years) only last me 26 weeks? Yes, there are people who abuse unemployment; but there are people that abuse selling homes….as it appears you do for a living…why should everyone suffer for the few? They’d get caught eventually. So much wasteful spending & nothing where/when we citizens need it.

    • sldelux06

I will gladly change places with you. Come walk in my shoes for a day….

    • Dumb Ignorance

Yah jerk. You say go get a job , work and look for another . Love too. Show me a company that pays 10.00 an hour that will higher someone who has years of management experience!!! They don’t I have tried and gotten calls asking if I am really serious about this.
Companies need to get away from the way they think and higher good hard working educated people instead of thinking they will quit at the first better chance.
Its not all unemployed who are the problem!!!

    • Kathleen Gnudi

Homes 4 You…. glad you are employed, count your blessings! 6 months of unemployment benefits is adequate in a thriving market. Today when 100 people are applying for 1 position it takes a lot longer and once in your 50’s it just magnifies the issue. Because I am too young to retire or get a reverse mortgage and don’t fall into any “speciality groups” as many, many americans facing the same issues,I am facing total devistation along with other hard working people who worked their entire life and paid into the system. Are you telling me that I have contributed into UE for over 40 years and I should only be able to get 6 months when I am in need????? There will always be someone taking advantage of the system and shame on them… but I AM NOT LAZEY!!! I will get another position BUT I need some help until I can. This country does not need more homeless families. Shame on us for allowing this to happen.

    • Margie Maryland

Was going to make a comment but all I can say is it has already been said for me here.Homes4You. Really needs a formal education how it is to struggle.

    • Bobby

Hey Homes 4 you I got a job as a hospice nurse. Hope to see you soon

    • Matt Crenshaw

you are such an unbelievable prick. Are you really serious. Are you living in Oblivion or what? Get a real taste of the reality of what is currently facing our nation. NO ONE IS HIRING. People do want to work and not loose everything that they have worked years to accumulate. I really pitty you and your fantasy world that you live in. I am going to print up your picture and take it to the alter and pray that almighty God has mercy on your soul, and that that place in hell reserved for pricks such as yourself will not be your permanent home after all. You too can be saved and change your heart.

    • Brad Copeland

Homes… You are letting your mouth get in the way of your brain. One of the problems with the entire situation is the complete lack of notice. One may have accepted an $8/hr job from being desperate had we known it was that or lose everything. No’one expected to have to settle for taking jobs away from High School students in the Fast Food industry to survive because not since World War 2 have there not been extended benefits available to those in need.
So I spent my money on my children for Christmas because the state that I was drawing from said I qualified for extended benefits… Only to later withdraw the statement with an apology…. So how in the fuck was I sposed to know that I had to scramble for a minimum wage job at the last minute. I’m a Union worker and expected to return to work long before then as it was. Like many others, I expected our government would take care of us but we may have wait a week or two.
Well Merry F-ing Christmas to us! By the time I realized the government and people like you don’t really give a shit, and would rather send foreign aid than take care of our own…. I couldn’t afford to even keep up the insurance on my car…. Now, can’t afford gas even if it was insured…. I barely have a phone that allows me this net access thanks to family members.
I understand your point tho… to a tiny extent agree with it but the people hafta see it coming. They are important enough to collect taxes from, fight and die for our country… Don’t they deserve the simple respect of knowing ahead of time that they would be without an income? I was told when my last week of benefits were issued that they “Didn’t know yet and wouldn’t know til Jan 1st whether benefits would be extended”.
That Homes 4 Someone with a Job…. Is Bullshit! Tell me 4 days after they have expired that they weren’t gonna be renewed? Lol… I’d be tempted to thump your ass if you lived next door to me Mr. Ideal World.

    • Mephistopheles

Homes, I hope you are cut in two by a train in front of your kids so to wipe that stupid grin of your stupid face as you taste you own blood!

    • Kevin

What a moronic comment! When will you be able to look for another job if you are already working and I’m sure people want to work. I don’t believe that the small amt of money that you get from unemployment will make you not wanna work.

    • dennis

What part dont u understand about one job for every three people okay the one jobs r filled what do the other two do retarrd tell me that mister got all the right answers retard

    • sammeria

you sound dumber than you look homes 4 you self centered lonely coward misery love company

    • Priorities

I am so sick of hearing people say that the unemployed are lazy!!! Are all of of you living in the same bubble on another planet. THE JOB MARKET HAS TAKEN A HUGE HIT BECAUSE OF COMPANY DOWNSIZING!!! RELOCATING!!! GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY!!! PART-TIME/CASUAL WORKER REPLACEMENTS!!! AT WILL LAWS!!! YOU NAME IT!!! WHAT PART OF THIS ARE YOU NOT GETTING??? I AND I’M SURE THE MAJORITY OF THE UNEMPLOYED WOULD MUCH RATHER WORK AND MAKE A REAL OR FAIR SALARY!!! AND AS FAR AS GETTING A JOB THAT THEY MAY NOT LIKE!!! MANY OF THE UNEMPLOYED WAS LAID OFF FROM THOSE “MAY NOT LIKE JOBS” SO KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU SPEAK OR YOU WILL SOUND IGNORANT!!!

If the state workforce agencies knew that unemployment would be a problem, why didn’t they say something when the senate was bickering over the bill? Dumm shitz!

  • carl williams

Boehner just write in the bill what you want so it will pass , help the people man . you can still hate on Obama , but pass this dam extention bill . this is not going away

  • DJMiles

In 2010 extended unemployment was cut off for 54 days and their was no problem at all getting Retroactive payments to those who were still unemployed. The new requirements proposed to the bill would not affect anything at all since the assessment of the unemployed and recommendations of job training to those in fields that have diminished are already required by most states.excluding millionaires from unemployment accounts for only $700,000 of the 9B and has nothing to do with household income but that of the applicant and unemployment has a record of all applicants income.
This letter was sent because somebody in a high position wanted it to be sent to derail the proposal. That could be a high ranking or Republican or even Obama because remember the Democrats planed on using the unemployed for political gain never wanting it to ever actually pass but we’re trapped when the 7 Republican senators proposed their own bill.

  • Don

@huckleberry You and boehner should take along walk off a short pier…

  • cca

I used to vote Republican….no more!!

If they want to get rid of something get rid of welfare. I know of people who have lived off welfare their entire lives and never worked. I have worked 20+ years. Now I need a little help and can’t get any. Scraping by since December trying to find a job that will pay enough to cover childcare for 2 babies. That job doesn’t exist in my area.

  • Where’s the guy I voted for?

There’s a little piece of information that seems to be getting brushed under the rug here; the EUC benefits that unemployed workers collect have been paid for BY THE UNEMPLOYED WORKERS WHEN THEY WERE WORKING! Republicans want it paid for AGAIN! Must be nice to be in the fold of nepotism in the govt where from birth, the silver spoon feeds you your entire life. PEOPLE ARE STARVING & LOSING THEIR HOMES; “Go out and find a job”? Really?!!! HOW DO I PUT GAS IN THE CAR WITH ABSOLUTELY NO MONEY?!!! There was a saying a while back; “Heat or eat”, remember? Well, that was months ago!!! It’s come to, toilet paper or, any kind of food that can be bought with pan-handled change! Live large politicians; Why be concerned for the many, when the few are doing so well? God bless your souls.

    • sldelux06

That’s exactly right!!!!! ALL employers pay in to the Federal unemployment insurance program. So the real question should be, where in the faq is that money????

  • Sandy

Congress can’t extend unemployment but can send billions to aid in foreign countries? I say lets all get out and vote Democratic in all coming elections. I have worked all my life and received 5 months of unemployment; and now at 64 cannot find a job. All the republicans want to do is increase military and get involved in war after war and the heck with the American people.

    • brian m

thats right sandy i say screw the other countries and take care of our own ive been outa work for 9 months but i did start a new full time job but not even close to what i was making but its a fresh start and i will fight for the back benefits im owed this government sucks and they all need to be voted out and to g ralph u can go suck something else oh maybe ur a spoiled little rich boy

    • Janey

I think both the house and the senate need to be completely changed…democrat or republican. Because if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

  • George Ralph

Go suck eggs you recalcitrant dullards!

  • sldelux06

This is absurd. These hurdles would not exist, had congress acted before they expired. Every other maneuver to extend emergency benefits has been passed, in the past. All employers pay into the unemployment. So there should never be a question as to how this is going to be funded, because it was already funded. A better question is, where did the money go??

Not all people on unemployment are lazy, and not looking for work. And not everyone has a desk job Monday through Friday from 8 – 5. Here in Colorado for instance, my husband is a heavy equipment operator. He is job/union attached. His unemployment claim has been opened for nearly two years (since mid 2012). It took over a year for him to exhaust his measly 26 weeks. Colorado law allows for all workers who work under 32 hours a week, to draw benefits for that week. He works outside. And with the unemployment benefits alone, we do not qualify for things like food stamps and medicade. And our health benefits are through the union, and he has to work at least 180 hours a month to maintain health insurance. So guess who is paying for our medical expenses? Not us, but the tax payers….

Anytime the temperatures are below 16 degrees, or it is snowing/raining, they cannot work. So that means that he is not able to work for weeks at a time. He finally exhausted his 26 weeks coincidentally on Dec 28th. But he was completely out of work all of December, January, and barely went back to work in the last week of February. He still is not back up to 40 hours a week. And this is not just him or his company, but all construction workers. And to make matters worse, the Federal government is threatening to pull infrastructure funding because all current jobs are so far behind. But they take no consideration into the fact that we had sub zero temps and keep getting hammered with snow and and freezing rain. It is not just his company, but all companies in this type of work, suffering. But then the state gets sanctioned for not repairing bridges. You’re damned if you do and fked if you don’t!

We have already lost one vehicle due to repossession, and our other vehicle will be gone in about 2 weeks, so now it’s nearly impossible for him to get to work on time, our children to get to school on time (no public school bus system) and for me to get to class on time because we are all trying to use one vehicle. We are in foreclosure of our home. Our utilities have already been shut off twice, and then we have to pay a fee to get them turned back on, once we have the money. I am at the library right now just to use the internet to check on the extension, and turn in my assignments. We have shut our home phone, tv, internet, and any unnecessary services off. Our cellphones are shut off, so even if there was more work, he would never get the phone call. Our credit cards are maxed out and our savings and 401k are depleted. We have sold most of our belongings.

The next thing for us, is bankruptcy, and guess who will foot that bill? It won’t be us…. we are filing a chapter 7. So it goes to the national debt, and the tax payers. He cannot just go get a job as a receptionist or a burger flipper at McDonalds. He is over qualified for petty jobs, and does not have the skills. His skills are working foreman/superintendent operating heavy equipment, and cranes. That has been his work for the past 40+ years. I am going back to school because I keep getting laid off due to call centers being outsourced. But even that costs money… and guess who is paying? That’s right, the tax payers, because the pell grants pays for my education.

So, to the people who think the unemployed are lazy. Come trade positions with me… I dare you to. And to stoned Boehner, come live in our shoes. We will gladly change places with you, and any other congress member who believes that we are lazy people.

I worked for over 40 years. I’m now unemployed because my company moved it’s headquarters down south. For years the Federal Government has been handing out money to people who are just too lazy to work. Now I desperately need assistance and can’t get it. I’ve applied for numerous jobs with no luck. The government should be able to look at a person’s work history and give benefits to those who deserve it.

Homes 4 you, you are very ignorant, you need to know what you are talking about before you post opinions…Are you serious, so the way over 2 million people that are unemployed are all lazy, WOW you must have been unemployed at some point and you were lazy…I am 60 years old and alone, I just had to move in with friends two weeks ago and I no longer have a car, home or any money, and dont know how I will pay for my storage with all my possessions in another week. For you to say what you said is so ludicrous on so many levels. Let me give you some facts….UI only pays in TX around $418 a week , which is only $10 plus change an hour, it doesn’t even for me a single women pay the bills I have. In 2009 I left a high paying job and it took me 15 months to find a job and I got paid $11.50 an hour, since than I have worked contract positions and temp positions just to keep my bills paid for the last 2 years, in September the contract I was working ended and here I am unemployed again and I am anything but lazy, I sit at my computer some days 10 to 13 hours sending resumes out, filling out applications, I have very good skills and I have only had about 7 interviews… Until you have been where we are shut the hell up!!!! I cant even imagine how hard it is for those with families and who are loosing there homes and those who have nowhere to go, so they live in there cars if they still have one and those who live in the streets. Our country needs to help us who work and have lost our jobs we are owed that. Maybe Boehner and all the rest of the politicians should give up a part of their 6 figure income for the next six months and help the people who voted them into office because they sure are not doing what they were put there to do. R u by chance related to Boehner????

Wow, just when I thought they had finally come to senses in steps John, a cynical nitpicking piece of shit to stick his Boehner up the ass of the American people in trouble. The program has ended back in Dec. as we all know from our reading and some 3 months have past the American people by. I know people who are presently dealing with situations like eviction, loss of utilities, crime and the simplest of them all HUNGER! Crime is on the rise. Their are more drug dealers then ever littered throughout my neighborhood per street corner and just the other day an old women of 83 years was attacked and knocked to the ground their by breaking her arm as she tried to fight off a purse snatcher. From the lying puppet in the White house to the assholes in congress, is anyone really taking a good look at the repercussions of our choices. And John, what say you stick that Boehner up your own ass and do you fucking job to help the people of your district because i can assure you that this is not going to go over well at the polls for you in the coming elections because as we all know thats the only thing you walking abortions have any concern for. You Make Me Sick

Bail out the banks. How about the worker? go to church and act like you care about your brothers and sisters. These people worked all their lives, hard and served their country in many cases. • Bill Foster

I was put back into the job market after the county office I worked at was closed to save money. Since I have found that even though I am a disabled vet and want to open a private practice no one would give me a loan. Now I am having to sell things to pay my bills. So its OK to send billions of our money to a country that has no impact to our country. SO KEEP SENDING MONEY OUT OF OUR COUNTRY AND IGNORE OUR PROBLEMS.I have been in public service for over 22 years ( 14 in army and 8 in county government) and this is what we get.

  • tired of politics

this government is a joke. the senate and the house are mindless idiots. we need to take back our country, we helped build it. the working class, the rich idiots just continue to take from us. and will continue to do so. if this bill ever passes, we will be homeless!! thanks to our wonderful government.

I have applied for 62,000 jobs and I am still unemployed. Benefits have expired and I cannot pay rent. What would the Senate and Congress have me do? If they were in this situation through no fault of there own they would look at it differently, I am sick of the government of this country. We are involved in things that are none of our business, Yet we cannot get our own people back to work. Stop worrying about Russia and worry about people right here at home.

Give us a break and pass this bill so people can go back to work. Stop fighting like little children and think about others.

I think we need to eliminate all holidays and weekends for Congress and make them earn their money and benefits. Seems like they only work part time for full time pay. It is sad that a country near Russia is their top priority and not the American people. Stop sending money overseas and take care of your brothers and sisters. If you would stop fighting among yourselves and pass a bill that would keep UC going longer than a few months then maybe the people could find a decent job. I going out of state to Virginia and take a good job. It seems like I can’t get a job in my own back yard and that is sad. I am a Registered Nurse and I’m trying to get back to work. • Sick and Tired

I am one of the over 3 million unemployed who lost benefits but I only received 26 weeks while others collecting for 99 weeks. I have a bachelors degree and 10+ years experience and am still having trouble finding a job. I have heard people say that there is 3 applicants for every job. WHERE DO THEY LIVE? I have been on 15+ interviews and every position has at least 10 screened through applicants for 1 job. Congress keeps fighting about how it will be paid for while I along with millions of others AMERICANS are selling our personal belongings, on the brink of homelessness if not already homeless, hungry and thanks to Congress unable to look for a job with no internet, no income, no agencies to help and no HOPE from them to do anything. I am not a dead beat nor am I looking for a handout. I worked for 20+ years without receiving unemployment benefits while my employers kept paying into it, WHERE IS ALL THAT MONEY?
Now we hear them saying they don’t know how to implement this if it does pass and is retroactive. Their reasons are old computers, too many weeks to verify, how we figure out who gets what etc. HERE IS YOUR ANSWER. Hire the unemployed to make phone calls, verify job searches and learn a new skill in the process. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

To everyone out thinking we’re sitting here getting “free money” shame on you! It’s because you’re working & not in this predicament. I did my due..this is my first time collecting and was cut off after diligently looking for work for 8 months. You try to live on nothing every month! Have a heart people – we are starving out here not loafing – JERKS. Unbelievable comments here.

  • Gina Reyna

I would like to tell you how hard it is to get a job right now. Yes the economy is rebounding but not to the point where the extension is unneeded. I am either over qualified or under qualified, the rejection from a year and a half of applying and not getting jobs made me decide to go back to school to pursue my Master’s degree. I can tell you that I apply to hundreds of offers but still no job. Now I am four months behind on my rent, not sure if I will be able to continue my online school without access to the web and you are all giving other countries billions – how are we paying for that? What about me and my family of 5 – why is it so important for us to find a way to pay for this benefit – are we not deserving of help more than citizens from other countries? We need help now too! Please reinstate the extended 2014 Unemployment Benefit Extension, even with that it’s hard to pay the bills and I can assure you I’d much rather work! The benefit for my family is just a homelessness safety net and not worth not going back into the workforce for such a low monthly stipend. Remember we are the middleclass, WE ARE NOT LAZY, without compassion from the upper class we would not exist.

  • Gina Reyna

First of all I am pissed that I have been a Republican all my life and now considering changing parties. The members in office are mostly made of Millionaires – how are they going to relate to me and my family? Do they know what it is like to have their car reposed, be evicted from their home or having to put their kids to be with no food? I say we take all of Congress and reduce their salaries to minimum wage and see how they like it and then get some middleclass representation.

Congress Is Now Mostly A Millionaires’ Club – Jan. 9, 2014

    http://time.com/373/congress-is-now-mostly-a-millionaires-club/

    Andrew Katz @katz

For the first time, more than half of congressional lawmakers are worth at least $1 million

Congress is loaded, if you weren’t already aware.

The Center for Responsive Politics analyzed the personal financial disclosure data from 2012 of the 534 current members of Congress and found that, for the first time, more than half had an average net worth of $1 million or more: 268 to be exact, up from 257 the year earlier. The median for congressional Democrats was $1.04 million and, for Republicans, $1 million even.

To calculate the net worth of lawmakers, the Center added together members’
significant assets, such as corporate bonds and stocks, then subtracted major
liabilities such as loans, credit card debt and property mortgages.

Here’s the breakdown: the median net worth for all House members was $896,000
(Democrats averaged $929,000 to Republicans’ $884,000) and, for Senators, $2.5 million. The median net worth for Senate Democrats was $1.7 million, down from $2.4 million in 2011; for Republicans: $2.9 million, up from $2.5 million in
    2011.

    Richest and Poorest Members

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee who made his millions in the car alarm business, was the richest lawmaker in Congress
with an average net worth of $464 million in 2012.

The least-wealthy member was Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.), who reported an average net worth of negative $12.1 million. Valadao is in the red, the Center found, due to loans for his family’s dairy farm.

    Who’s Investing In What

The group also analyzed the members’ investments. General Electric was the most popular holding; the minimum Democratic investment was $927,777 and the smallest Republican investment was $2,130,657. The top five rounded out with Wells Fargo, Microsoft Corp., Procter & Gamble, and Apple Inc.

The full list of 2012 personal financial disclosures from members of Congress can
    be found here.

  • If not now when?

All the goofy and wasteful spending that has taken place in this government over the years. The outright theft and misuse of tax payer money and now at this time, they want to act like they are just being good stewards of our money so thus the conditions placed on this. You have got to be kidding me. Where have you been up to now Mr. Bohner? Matter of fact where have you all been Congress. You have been spending money on crap and worthless pork like it was flowing from a faucet for years on end proven by the unbelievable debt and deficit. However now, at this time, to your citizens in need you act like you are responsible spenders of the tax payers money and you cant spend another cent without knowing how to pay for it. Does the word Hypocrites apply? I say absolutely.

  • If not now when?

Where are you Barry with your pen and phone? You have not even mentioned it since the big show speech. At least you got your brackets filled out.

    • rockyl

Mr. Bonehead is a drunk that needs to lay off the booze. We the American people that pay taxes and your salary Mr. Bonehead wasn’t meant for you to drink it all up. A drunk speaker of the house is shameful. You need help, and you need to go. Real Americans no longer support you or your drinking problem and all your excuses and lies. We the American people can no longer trust you. Please step down and leave. You will be doing yourself and all of America a real favor by leaving now.

  • John Gillman

We need to make sure John Boehner is removed from office next election,if it wasn’t for him the benefits would have already been approved.he has his millions he doesn’t care one small amount about the people he suppose to be helping. Please everyone remember him come reelection.Do not vote him back in office, remove his name as house speaker from the US capital building he doesn’t deserve the title,or any other decision making position in any government.it’s something how people in power forget where they came from.I recently visited the us capital in Washington, and I cringed when I seen his name hanging as the speaker of the house.politics is so corrupt.

  • The Malone Family

Speaker Boehner, I am from Ohio. I am 64 years old and I can get to the interviews, am totally qualified for the position(s) and yet when I walk in the door it’s pretty obvious that I’m no spring chicken. I am on the verge of bankruptcy. I beg you, please allow this extension and give us, Americans who have paid into these rolls for years please be able to thank you for understanding how many are suffering.

  • Disgusted

Speaker Boehner, I am from CT. I am 59 years old. I am on unemployment for the first time. I have been to a lot of Interviews since losing my job last Nov. When I walked in the door to an Interview the look on the face of the Interviewer is worth a thousand words of course they go through the whole Interview process with me and they know I am qualified for the job but, they tell me they will let me know within a week. The week passes so I go back to talk to them and see a person less then half my age that got the job. I am an American Citizen and you work for us. I do not care about other Countries I care about this Country. If you are having a problem helping your own Country such as the unemployed then maybe it’s time for you to step down, I am sure you have enough millions to retire.we want the same chance you gave the unemployed in 2010 and pass the unemployment Extensions for 99 weeks and help the millions of people who are still unemployed. I will soon be joining those millions because my 26 weeks will soon be up. We paid our taxes all of our lives and I still pay my taxes out of my Unemployment. Pass The Unemployment Extensions.

  • gk

These people need to go without a paycheck for 3 months and let them see what it is like to wonder how to survive. They should be ashamed of what they are doing to people who have worked hard and cannot help what is happening in the economy and the working class people are being punished for the mistakes made.

  • dave

I’ve been working since I was 15. I love America and I belicve that its the American People. THE PEOPLE! and Not our useless government that makes America great great. Open your Damn eyes you worthless, money sucking, leaches! your children need your damn help! get off your damn phone. stop arguing! stop making excuses! and pay attention TO ME! Screw it! its pointless, i’m waisting breath, i’m just moving to canada.

  • Chuck B.

I just recently received a surprising phone call for possible employment, however due to the lack of funds I could not even go to the interview due to the recent loss of vehicle insurance. I live in a remote area with no bus line and the job is a 45mn ride one way. A cab ride would of cost 50$ one way. Congress needs to get this passed. I wonder how many other people are in this same situation, even if you can get a job, do you have the means to get there. Three months and no jncome has dried up my funds, and am woried that congress is deliberately dragging this along. First it is that they cant reach an agrement, now that they can….it is that because it has been so long…they feel that they shouldnt or wont back pay it. Hey, even though we may be unemployed, we are also tax payers. We still have to pay our fair share, one way or another. Unemployment is not welfare.

  • YONATAN C

I think that this entire situation is a disgrace, and speaks volumes to the HUGE disconnect between the “political elite” and the rest of the country. This should never have taken place in the first place. When these two million plus unemployed workers ran out of their benefits in late December, there should have immediately been a bill passed to help these families. It’s unfortunate, that instead of assisting these families in need, many of these politicians chose to name call, an blame the victims for their predicament. I guess it’s much easier to blame others, than to actually spend the time and resources to fix the problem. It’s been three long months of debate after debate, as to whether or not to help the unemployed. Throughout this time, these families have had to struggle to survive each day, not knowing if they will be forced to be homeless the next day. Many of these people have worked all of their lives, and have paid into the system for years, and now find that the system’s not working for them. Actually, they have been hung out to dry by the politicians. They have been used as bargaining chips, and political leverage, both both parties, for their own agendas. This week the congress has approved billions of dollars for the Ukraine, and it passed through the congress in no time at all. The wheels of justice turn quickly depending on the cause. It looks that the American people, are not as important as foreign countries. When it comes to spending the tax payer’s money on Corporate welfare, and foreign aid, or Bank and Airline bailouts, money doesn’t seen to be a problem. How many “breaks” and ” vacations” does the senate have? The average American doesn’t have even a quarter of the time off that they do. Because of the senate’s inability to pass the unemployment extension bill, many families have faced eviction, home foreclosure, bankruptcy, and homelessness, This is a very real tragedy that’s taking place in this country. The Republican party has deliberately stalled and postponed and rejected each proposal submitted to them for a vote. Hoping that it will just go away. My hope is that these more than two million unemployed voters will remember the pain and hardship that they were forced to endure, and vote all of these politicians out of office. Perhaps they need to be unemployed too, and maybe they will understand the pain and struggle that these families are going through. Politicians like John Boerhner, should not even be in office in the first place. He and those like him have shown themselves as being “disconnected” from the citizens he “supposedly” represents.
