This week, Apple launched a subscription service for the app store. It enables all publishers of content-based apps (including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc.) to follow the model of the recently launched The Daily from New Corp. 

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the service has raised concerns about antitrust, though neither Apple nor the Justice Department has commented on the matter.

Mac App Store Hits One Million Downloads In First Day

Apple said today that over one million apps have been downloaded from its Mac App Store in the first day.

“We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

“Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.”

Mac App Store Officially Coming January 6

Apple announced that its Mac App Store will officially open on January 6 (a Thursday). With this, Apple hopes to capitalize on the success it’s had with its App store for iPhone and iPad apps for its older Mac brand. 

Right away, the store will be available in 90 countries, and will feature paid and free apps in a variety of categories like Games, Productivity, Education, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, and Utilities.

RIM: Customers Tired of Being Told What to Think by Apple

Apple and Google have become known for taking shots at one another during announcements and presentations. We talked about this at length here. However, Google’s not the only target of Steve Jobs these days. BlackBerry maker RIM was on the receiving end of some other harsh comments from Apple’s CEO this week when the company reported its financial results for the last quarter.
