The Daily (the new iPad news publication from News Corp.) has been out for a day now, and after having the chance to mess around with it, it’s hard for me to know just what to make of it, and frankly I’m having a hard time seeing this as a revolution in digital content (or print content or paid content).

The letter came on top of an earnings report from parent News Corp that showed recent MySpace layoffs cost $107 million in severance and restructing.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has launched The Daily, a e-paper-based daily newspaper exclusively for the iPad, and the early results are about what you’d expect:  rich, iPad-friendly content delivered with a subscription-based model.

In regards to The Daily, feelings of “meh” come from the product itself.  While the newscycle is all over the launch, has anyone stopped to ask who wants this application?  Even the most basic of iPad users surely understand that news can be gathered from a multitude of places, places even the iPad can access.

Facebook Poaches News Corp. Gaming Exec

This weekend, word spread that Facebook had raised $500 million in funding at a valuation of $50 billion, and following that, we imagine a few early employees and investors placed orders for Ferraris and the like.  The company, meanwhile, has hired Sean Ryan, who previously helped oversee News Corp.’s gaming division.

Of course, the timing may be coincidental, especially considering that neither development was either announced or confirmed through official channels.  Still, it looks like Facebook has secured a valuable asset in Ryan.

News Corp. On MySpace: “Current Losses Are Not Acceptable”

To be clear: we don’t mean to spread rumors or alarm anyone.  But MySpace employees might want to consider setting aside some extra money and updating their LinkedIn profiles, as one News Corp. exec hinted during an earnings call that a drastic cost-cutting action of sorts may occur.

A large round (or two) of layoffs is one possibility.  A sale or even shutdown of MySpace doesn’t seem to be out of the question, either.  News Corp. COO Chase Carey made the situation sound quite serious.

Apple Set To Offer 99-Cent TV Show Rentals

Apple is reportedly in talks with News Corp’s Fox, CBS, NBC Universal and Walt Disney to allow iTunes users to rent TV shows for 99 cents.

Under the deal, according to Bloomberg, episodes would be available to rent 24 hours after they air, would be commercial free and available to iTunes users for 48 hours.
