AT&T has launched a U-Verse iPhone app, which gives U-verse subscribers the ability to download and watch TV shows on their phones.

The company says it is the first to provide an integrated mobile app that lets you manage your DVR and download/watch select shows. The app replaces the Mobile Remote Access for iPhone app.

The developers of TweetDeck are getting ready to beta test TweetDeck for Android, a move some might call long overdue. The incredible growth that Android is seeing is making the operating system hard to ignore (as a Netflix employee recently pointed out).

Gowalla has announced the launch of its new Check in API. This is different than the Gowalla API, which was launched in February, which first let developers tap into Gowalla data for their apps.

"With today’s release, we’re expanding what’s possible, enabling your applications to create check-ins on behalf of users," the company says. It utilizes OAuth 2.0 to do so.

Lollapalooza gets underway today for the weekend, and its promoters are using Facebook to get fans connected with one another. "This year, the Lollapalooza team is using Facebook to solve one of the hardest problems people face at music festivals – finding your friends. As people are drawn to different parts of the festival and often get separated, cell phone service gets hindered as thousands of people in close proximity try to call their friends," a representative for Facebook tells WebProNews.

Vonage has launched a new mobile app for calling Facebook friends. Users can make free mobile calls to their Facebook friends who also run the app (anywhere in the world). This can be done right from their friends list with one touch.

It was recently discovered that Mark Zuckerberg had begun using an Android device. Many Android users were hopeful that would lead to the company improving its Android app, which has been less than perfect.

Whether Zuckerberg’s Android use was the driving factor or not, Facebook has indeed launched a new update for its Android app. A Facebook spokesperson shared some of the notable features of the update:

Google announced today that it has launched an enhancement for the Google Voice mobile app on Android and BlackBerry devices. The tweak is designed to make placing calls quicker. The feature itself is called "Direct Access Numbers."

Flickr has released an updated version of its iPhone app, specifically targeting new features of the iPhone 4 like multi-tasking and support for HD-video uploads.

AOL has launched a new smartphone portal at m.aol.com and 2 new Android apps. In fact, AOL specifically says that it’s increasing its focus on Android.

The smartphone portal is for HTML5-supporting smartphones, providing a touch-driven interface that allows for easy scrolling through articles and content, as well as location-based services for weather, movies, traffic, etc. There is also an app directory for users to find mobile apps, and it supports video content.

Barnes & Noble has introduced Nook for Android. This comes in the form of a free app that lets users read eBooks with customizable font styles. The company says this is the first Android eReader app that lets users share eBooks with friends.

The company also points out that this is the first eReader software to feature its new "NOOK-centric" branding. The app will soon be followed up with updated apps for the iPhone, iPad, and other devices.

Research in Motion (RIM) has unveiled a new security application for BlackBerry called BlackBerry Protect. The product allows users to wirelessly backup, restore, and locate their BlackBerry smartphones.

BlackBerry Protect comes equipped with remote device wipe, remote device lock, a "lost and found" screen, the ability to locate the device on a map, remote activation of the loud ringer.

mSpot has announced the launch of a free app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, which lets users watch full-length streaming movies instantly.

"The Mobile Movies iPad app makes them the first company to make streaming full-length movies available across Apple devices (beating Netflix to the punch)," a representative for mSpot tells WebProNews.

The U.S. General Services Administration has launched a newly redesigned USA.gov featuring new mobile applications and better search functionality.

"Revamped with direct input from the public, USA.gov leverages cutting-edge technology to provide faster, easier, more innovative government services directly to the American people," said Dave McClure, GSA Associate Administrator of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies.

Yesterday a questionable report from SMobile Systems was released talking about Android security and how a fifth of Android apps pose security risks. The methodology behind this report has pretty much been ridiculed throughout the Blogosphere, though quite a few publications covered it. CNET even went so far as to retract the report.

While there are other mobile operating systems that shouldn’t be ignored (Blackberry for one), there are two that seem to get the most attention, and that may end up competing most for user and marketer attention above the rest in the foreseeable future. These are of course the iPhone OS and the Android OS.

Google has started including mobile apps in it search results on iPhones and Android devices. Users of such devices can simply go to Google.com, search for an app, and get special links and content at the top of the search results.

These links can be tapped to go directly to either the Android Market or App Store page for that particular app, making it easy to download the app right away. Users can also see some of the apps’ details, such as price, rating, and publisher from these pages.

Ask’s Dictionary.com has reached the 10 million download milestone for its mobile apps in just over a year. Dictionary.com gets about 50 million unique visitors a month between its site and its mobile apps.

The company’s new iPad app already has over 100,000 downloads to date. I spoke with Dictionary.com President Shravan Goli who expressed a great deal of excitement about the iPad and tablet-style devices in general.

The world’s second largest app store behind Apple iTunes, GetJar, said today that more than 50 million people have downloaded the Facebook mobile app in the past six months.

With GetJar’s App Download Page (ADP) and Mobile Site Shortcut (MSS) users are able to download the app, which gives them a shortcut to access Facebook’s mobile website from their phone with a single click.
