Cell Phone Use May Protect Against Alzheimer

Talking on a cell phone may actually help to protect against and even reverse Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study by researchers at the University of South Florida.

The study involved exposing mice over long periods of time to electromagnetic waves associated with cell phone use.

Online Tool Rates Cell Phone Radiation

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has put together an online consumer guide that rates more than 1,000 cell phones based on the levels of radiation they emit.

The EWG says the list is aimed at helping consumers make better decisions about which   cell phones to buy. The free online tool offers information on each phone’s radiofrequency emissions, allowing users to compare different models.

Amazon Launches New Wireless Store

Amazon has launched a new site catering specifically to cell phones and their service plans. The online store located at wireless.amazon.com lets users shop for phones by model, service, color, etc. 

You may be able to shop by carrier at AmazonWireless, but that only includes AT&T and Verizon. On top of that, they don’t even carry the iPhone, which is available through AT&T. Here is a look at the site’s bestselling phones:

Drivers are far more distracted by talking on a mobile phone than by conversing with a passenger in an automobile, according to a new study by University of Utah psychologists Frank Drews, David Strayer and Monisha Pasupathi.

The study used a sophisticated driving simulator and found that when drivers talk on a cell phone, they drift out of their lanes, and miss exists more frequently than drivers talking with a passenger.

House Bill Would Ban The Use Of Cell Phones On Planes

A new bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would ban the use of mobile voice calls while flying in planes.

The new bill co-sponsored by democrat House Representative Pete DeFazio of Oregon, is called the "Hang Up Act" and would still allow text messaging and Web browsing to be used.

Currently the FCC does not permit in-flight voice calls and has put the issue on hold since March 2007.

Analog Cell Phone Network To Shut Down

In 2008 mobile carriers will begin shutting down the analog cell phone network.

Starting February 19, 2008, cell phone carriers, including AT&T, Alltel and Verizon Wireless, will be turning off their analog networks.  Other mobile carriers including Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile do not have analog networks and their customers will not be affected.

Wireless Spending Exceeds Landlines

With more Americans ditching their landlines, 2007 is on pace to be the first year in which U.S. households spend more on cell phone services, according to industry and government officials.
