Last week, we took a look at YouTube’s testing of 3D videos after a thread was spotted in the YouTube Help Center where an employee was discussing the concept. This was part of his "20%" time.

Google is testing 3D videos on YouTube. An interesting post in the YouTube Help Center was discovered by Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz, and a Google employee is apparently using his "20% time" to work on the "stereoscopic player".

Google is still letting its employees play with their 20% time, as evidenced by the newest YouTube project spotted: three dimensional video. Pete, the Googler behind this, confirmed this in a YouTube Help thread, saying that the project is “currently very early.”

Pete says the current tags in the project are:

Google has teamed up with the Guggenheim Museum to create a design competition to design a "simple shelter for a specific geographic location anywhere in the world." Contestants will use Google’s SketchUp, Google earth, and Google 3D Warehouse to design, geo-locate, and upload their projects.

It was almost a year ago that Walt Disney created a 3D virtual tour of Disney World and made it available in Google Earth.

Now it has done the same with Disneyland Paris. The Google Lat Long Blog provides more details.

Tech companies are getting together to crate an open, royalty-free standard for presenting accelerated 3-D graphics online. Included in the consortium are Google, Adobe, Intel, Apple, and others.

Google has announced the release of SketchUp 7. SketchUp is software you can use to build 3D models for any number of project types, including Google Earth projects. In version 7, Google has added a whole slew of new features.

Google Earth is doing some amazing things as highlighted with their announcement the other day of the Ancient Rome layer (shown in the video below).

Google has teamed up with Past Perfect Productions, UCLA, and the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia to bring Ancient Rome back to life with a new Google Earth layer.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is now on Google Earth in 3D allowing users to virtually tour Disney’s four theme parks and its 22 hotels and resorts.

There are 1,500 3D points of interest in the virtual tour of Disney. Users can click on images to get more information about an attraction, purchase tickets, make reservations and map out their vacation.

Walt Disney has announced that Disney and Pixar will make eight new 3D animated films in the next four years.

With the exception of "Wall*E", a robot love story and the hand drawn "Princess and the Frog", all the movies will be in digital 3D the studio said. All the 3D films will also be available in a 2D format.
