Swallowed By Hippo: A Man’s Harrowing Tale

River guide Paul Templer was an experienced traveler by the age of 27; he led tours down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe many times, and had encountered rambunctious animals there before. But none would prove to be so terrifying as the hippo that nearly ate him 17 years ago.

Templer recently sat down and wrote his tale for the Guardian and says he had met the same hippo before; it had even rushed at him in a “half-hearted” way when he moved to close to its territory. But on this day, the bull would become so agitated that a half-hearted attack grew into a full-fledged riot.

“We were near the end of the tour, the light was softening and we were taking in the tranquillity,” Templer wrote. “The solid whack I felt behind me took me by surprise. I turned just in time to see Evans, who had been flung out of his boat, flying through the air. His boat, with his two clients still in it, had been lifted half out of the water on the back of the huge bull hippo.”

Templer says he shouted to the other guides to get their clients to safety before turning to try and grab Evans. But just as he was about to grab the man’s hand, he was enveloped in darkness.

“There was no transition at all, no sense of approaching danger. It was as if I had suddenly gone blind and deaf,” he says.

What happened next is enough to make any reader shudder in terror.

“I was aware that my legs were surrounded by water, but my top half was almost dry. I seemed to be trapped in something slimy. There was a terrible, sulfurous smell, like rotten eggs, and a tremendous pressure against my chest. My arms were trapped but I managed to free one hand and felt around – my palm passed through the wiry bristles of the hippo’s snout. It was only then that I realized I was underwater, trapped up to my waist in his mouth.”

He managed to free himself when the hippo took a breath, only to be dragged under again. Just when he began to resign himself to a dark, watery death, the animal spat him out and he was dragged to safety by his friends. He was alive, but just barely; the hippo left him with over 40 puncture wounds–one so deep that part of his lung was visible–and only one arm.

As for Templer’s friend Evans, he wasn’t so lucky. His body was found downriver two days later.

“Attempts were made to find and kill the rogue hippo, but he seemed to have gone into hiding,” Templer says. ” I’m convinced, though, that I met him one more time. Two years later I led an expedition down the Zambezi and as we drifted past the stretch where the attack had taken place, a huge hippo lurched out of the water next to my canoe. I screamed so loudly that those with me said they’d never heard anything like it. He dived back under and was never seen again. I’d bet my life savings it was the same hippo, determined to have the final word.”

Wow! This reminds me of the story of Job in the Bible who was swallowed by a fish (most likely a whale) and lived to tell about it. It is definitely a miracle that this man is alive to tell his story.

    • Brett

      You mean Jonah?

      • Liz

Yes, I meant Jonah. And I believe it really happened. Actually, there is scientific evidence that it can happen.

        • Mark

A whale’s throat is so small it could never swallow a man whole. Another lie brought to you by King James and the Jewish conspiracy@

          • QueenB

Mark: You can’t argue with scripture!

          • david

can you prove its a lie.

          • yogi

Sperm whale is a possibility, unlikely,of happening. Can’t prove it has happened, can’t prove it hasn’t happened.

          • CYNTHIA

I convinced if God created the world and everything in it, He could make a giant fish swallow a human especially if He was going to use it to teach His children something.

          • Bob Brady

Oh come on now ! the Jewish Conspiracy ? You are just jealous because us Jews have more money than the conventional Catholic or Christians do . The Hippo Story is an esop fable Guaranteed .

          • FUMark

            Shut up

          • Robert

Out of the mouths of babes! Faith is:Believing in what one cannot see…or explain. Miracles! Faith, Hope and Love, but the greatest is love. True love can only come from, and be comprehended by, faith.
We love people despite their ignorance.

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.

The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.

Irritated, the smarmy teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.
            (Matthew 19:26)

The little girl said, ‘When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah’.

The teacher asked, ‘What if Jonah went to hell?’

The little girl replied, ‘Then you ask him’.

The only difference is this actually happened.

      • Mozart

Can you prove it did not? No, you can’t, and what annoys you
with what others believe? We have freedom of religion in this
country. No one is forcing you to believe anything.
Your statement is indicative of your arrogance ( shall we call it “Intolerance”??????

        • Andrew

Neither was she forcing you to believe anything as well. It’s not as if she was oppressing your religion, just making a statement of her own beliefs. Your statement sir, was intolerant.

        • Ryan

Can you prove it did? Just because some guy wrote a book doesn’t mean it’s all true.

          • http://yahoo.com Timmy

This poor man who got eaten, my heart hurts

          • david

can you prove it didnt, gotta have faith

        • Joanna B.

oh, my, everything starts a fight, doesn’t it?

          • Peter G

My favorite book of the Bible is the one where Jesus swallows the puzzle piece and the man in the yellow hat has to take him to the hospital.

          • http://yahoo.com emily

Shut yo long neck, hippo in the head ass up. lookin like you just got eaten by the hippo face ass

        • Mark

Has it ever happened again? That says more than some fairy tale written by the Jewish conspiracy. Just like a dead man coming back to life. yeah, right!!!
          Small minds = religious believers

          • http://webpronenews Sean

Mark, you small pathetic liberal whiner. go away.

          • david

sounds like your upset because someone has something you want

          • Tony

When you limit a small mind to a certain group, I have to wonder how narrow your views are.

        • Paul is Dead

lmao… well can you prove that it did? Other than “a magic book says so.” I hate when religious folks try to take the whole “can you prove it didn’t happen?” route. The burden of proof is on YOU (theists), not on those who don’t believe in your fairy tales.

          • david

to paul , i dont have ta prove anything

          • Bob Brady

Exactly david and they all want what I have and thats the big bucks , because this is one “JEW” that fortunately for my wife and I have wroked our butts off for the 46 years we have been married and made very wise investments , and we are dualproperty owners with owning our own home plus rental property , bank acct’s etc . So ya they all wish they could have my money .
And all this being done from a wheel Chair for life after 2 tours in Vietnam and being a believer and a survivor of cancer twice since nam and losing my leg and losing half of my gut and my back , and needing oxygen for life due to a recent lung transplant for cancer . I barely have a voice due to half my face being blown away and 26 consecutive surgeries and having my face rebuilt . YES I DO have the MONEY and all the Jew haters are Jealous of me .

        • Scott

I agree. I want testimony from his customers. Anyone can spout a story.

      • http://yahoo PHYLLIS WARREN

I hate to burst your bubble but, Jonah was swallowed by a fish. I bet you don’t recall Nineveh either; I truly feel sorry that you have not been properly taught. This is the problem today in America, too much school but no education; such a lame excuse but, seems too many thinks school=education. The Holy Bible is the same as it has been for hundreds of years.

        • Ian K

Instead of decrying school, if you’d actually attended some classes then you’d know that the hole filled Bible has taken on many and varied incarnations and translations over the centuries. In fact it’s the most altered work of fiction that’s ever been written.

        • VMJackson

Actually it depends on the Biblical version of scripture being used. The KJV of the Bible reads as follows: Matthew 11:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Either whale or big fish, we know that God was in the midst of the plan for a reason and for a purpose.

          • Mark

Do the math, he wasn’t in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights. (Actually, he is STILL in the grave) GOOD RIDDANCE

        • Mike

The bible should be updated though. Most people pick and choose what they want from the bible and ignore the rest.

          • Krysta

there’s a nice version of the bible, the new world translation and its in modern language, so its easy to understand, and i know what you mean about people ignoring parts of the bible, its just not right.

          • yogi

Sounds more like science to me pick what you believe in or not.

        • Mark

You are so right. The Bible has been wrong for at least 100 years. They never should have removed the first 4 words of Genesis: Once upon a time….

          • QueenB

You don’t have to believe. But on the day of judgement, you’ll see for yourself that it wasn’t fiction after all.

Fellow believers: Remember Proverbs 26:4. Carry on!

          • Sandra

I curious Mark how do you explain your existence??

        • Jackalacka

Yes, wouldn’t that be great if we taught the bible in our schools? Your right, it hasn’t changed. BUT, much of what is written about in the bible that occurred was perceived as the wrath of God, or a miracle, or given a specific story because it couldn’t be explained. Now we have this thing called Science? I know you’ve heard of it. You might not have paid attention to it in school, but I’m sure you’ve heard the word. And I know that’s a bad word to the evangelical and pentecostal folks in my religion, because scientific evidence sometimes causes us to question what we believe as literal. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s called critical thinking. It doesn’t make a person an atheist or agnostic. It actually fosters a deeper look inward, and that grows and nurtures the soul. So please don’t put your ignorance on the public schools. Your statement is the most ridiculous barb thrown at public schools I’ve ever heard. Talk about lame excuses.

        • Bob Brady

Paul get a life ! this story again is just an Esop Fable and every one knows it . If it did actually happen the hippo would not have stopped at half his body and spit him out he would have taken the whole body just like a shark once their pray is dead they eat the whole body. Case in point today a shark attacked a surfer in Florida , killed him then took him in his mouth and swallowed him whole . So tell me another fable and some imaginary hippo that spits their pray out . You are gulible to believe anything.

          • Fred Flintstone

It is Aesop not Esop that wrote many stories with important morals at the end of each fable so children could learn right from wrong. Much like the Bible or any other religious tome does. My stepson loves the Vegie Tales version of this fable. However none of this has anything to do with the poor man being swallowed by a hippo. I always thought hipos were vegetarians. guess I was wrong about that!

          • Holly

So, let me get this straight. You believe that a big man in the sky created us all, but you don’t believe that a man can get attacked by a hippo?

It’s Aesop, by the way, not Esop. Also, sharks don’t swallow people whole, they rip pieces off like crocodiles do. There is literally no way that a shark could swallow a grown man whole, even if it was fifty feet long (and the vast majority are under twenty feet).

        • Robert

          Yes, and God never changes…

      • Judy

Sorry Melisa – the Bible is true and yes Jonah did get swallowed by a big fish. Sorry.

        • Kevin

Were you alive thousands of years ago to witness it, so you know for sure it happened as is and that it is real? It is one thing to have faith and hope that most things in the bible are fact and that we will go to heaven one day but the bottom line is none of us know for certainity what will happen, not even the Pope!

          • Trey

Sorry, but Kevin is right. The bible was written centuries ago, by a group of men, not by G*d. It was written for the purpose of creating a set of rules for people to live by, because if you think we have terrorists or barbaric people now, I can assure you people were far worse back then, with no sense of order or law. It’s as simple as that. A way to guilt or scare people into not doing evil or bad things to others.

          • tim

OH kevin faith, hope, and obedience brings you closer to God ,when I am aggravated, prayers calm me down and when things are going badly for me,some more prayers and things always seems to turn around in my favor God has took care of for sixty two years now,and just telling you about Jesus makes me feel so good.Every body could be so blessed !

          • phil

That’s why recorded history is important. Were you alive during the Holocost? No, but documented histroy is quite reliable. The Jews consider the Old Testement their peoples history. Today’s archeology is showing that it’s fact. The OT is full of hard to believe stories, but are we to say they are not true because we weren’t there? PS I weigh no confidence in what the Pope believes.

          • chance

“we” are going to Heaven??? You sir won’t be with a heart full of doubt. The word FAITH means just that!! You either have it and believe whole heartidly or you don’t!! There is no choosing what part of the Bible to believe and which you don’t. I normally don’t comment on these things but the comments that people make on here are ridiculous!! I hope you like HOT weather!!

          • Ronnie

            1 John 5:13
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

          • Robert

I know…beyond the shadow of a doubt with incredibly powerful certainty. I am going to my Fathers house.
Hope to see you there. You’ve received many invitations and we love you very much! R.S.V.P.

        • maria

Who said the bible is true? A man? Many men? Most of it was written hundreds of years later. Heresay at best.

          • phil

No Maria, some of the gospels date back to the first century. Also it was written over hundreds of years. The over 100 prophey’s of Chirst were written 600 yrs before he was born. Its an amazing book that has stood the test of time because of it’s author, The Living God.

        • Tom

The Bible is true, eh? If so, then you believe that there is a 2000+ year-old person walking among us today. After all, according to Matthew 16:27-28, Jesus told a group of his followers that “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Apparently, you also believe that Adam lived to the age of 930, Methusaleh to 969 and Noah to 950.

You poor thing. It’s a shame you haven’t figured out that all religion is rooted in ignorance, superstition and wishful thinking.

          • Kathy H.

So you’ve met everyone on earth, have you? Maybe there are 2,000 year old men and you haven’t met them yet! People believe in aliens and most people haven’t met one. Maybe aliens are the 2,000 year old men – superior intellect, super-human powers, etc.

          • phil

Tom, glad you got it all figured out..atheism, what has it done for the world latly? I know, it spends it’s time worrying about people of faith.

          • http://yahoo john bryan

Talking about the 2nd death in the bible.

          • Zella

Tom, You actually need to have someone translate scripture for you if you care to comment on it. Jesus did not mean that they would live until the end of time, it meant they would not know the suffering of death until they go to hell because he knew they would never be saved. Long ago people did live longer than they do now, there was also less population on this earth. I am not an expert on the Bible but I do believe and keep my Faith. After all that is what the Bible is about, believing in God and the Faith to know we will continue our life in Heaven after we leave here. I feel sad for people like you who do not know God.

          • Esther

Yeah I think the Bible is true. You know why? Because God used the men to write it. True there are some mistakes in the Bible, but its not THE Bible. Its people who screw it up. The Bible is written by God through men.
And how do I prove God exists? How are there healings of people just by prayer? How can people speak in tongues? Its through God. Unless you experience Him, you wouldn’t understand. Look up a church called Bethel Church in Northern California. That church emphasizes on the workings of God and Holy Spirit. After you research and actually visit that place, tell me all religion is rooted in ignorance, superstition, and wishful thinking.

          • Ronnie

            1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

God knew there’d be people like you Tom. I pray for people like you, who, if you don’t change your mind will live eternally separated from the living God. I tell you this is true.

          • Ronnie

Yes, I do believe these people lived as long as the Bible says they did. But Jesus sits at the right hand of God. He left the Holy Spirit here for us.

          • Sandra

I suppose you evolved from some kind of spontaneous combustion and the plantets just magically appeared??

          • Robert

I will never have to be in a situation where I regretted my choice. Will you? Review the evidence.
            I’m not a very smart man, but I know what love is;
            Forrest Gump. Even Forrest believed…

        • wowreally

yeah it’s true because we’re forced to believe so.

          • Emmanuel

Nobody can force anybody to believe anything. Faith is a voluntary conviction that something is true. If somebody has forced you to believe something, then I think you are very sick.

          • Mike

Would be nice to believe but it is hard for me because God seems so vindictive. Just looking at the replies of being taking delight in knowing that someone will be sent to hell because he doesn’t agree with your beliefs is pretty disturbing if you ask me. Just look at Numbers 15:32-36 and you get the idea.

          • david

no one is forced to believe, its a choice

        • Ashley

If the things in the bible really did happen…and you have faith in God…Can you not see how tainted the current bible is? For thousands of years our world leaders have altered the bible to say what they wanted. That is a recorded FACT!

      • Believer

Jonah did get swallowed by a giant fish, and someday you will comfront the ONE TRUE GOD, and if you have not accepted HIS SON’S gift of Salvation through HIS death on the cross and Resurrection from the dead, you will be sent to a very unpleasant place for all eternity. Please trust in Jesus before it is eternally too late

        • roey

          You’re scary.

          • THOMAS

Believing Jonah and the fish is called FAITH–either you have it or you don’t–if you don’t My faith says your “after-life” is gonna be very HOT.

    • Troll Catcher

      I got a Troll here!!!!!!

      • Bob Brady

Give me a break Thomas like there is a heaven and hell ? ya right ? Just like they say you will die in a hell of lake of fire . Have you ever seen Lake michigan on Fire ? or Lake tahoe ? I didn’t think so . There is no heaven or hell . You die you are dead ashes to ashes , dust to dust after the bugs get done with you .

        I rest my case

    • jan

cept it wasn’t job, but jonah

      • Gail

This is the silliest argument I ever heard. The article was about a hippo attacking a modern man.

        • Alex George

Insecurity is the main cause for an argument like this.

    • Candice

      That was Jonah…

    • Vkel

It was JONAH that was swallowed by the fish!

    • Ernie

Jona not Job was swallowed by a great fish…

  • MarkS

Things to cross off my “bucket list”.
    1. Swimming with hippos.

    • http://N/A Nickalus T. Holt

      LOL… An instant classic…

  • Nathan

WOW! That is an intense story.

  • http://N/A Nickalus T. Holt

I’m just not buying this fable… Jack and the Beanstalk has more credibility than this one…

  • Curtis H

“he moved to close to its territory”…

    ***he moved TOO close….proofread!!!!!

    • dodger

Proofreading is not the problem. It’s that so many “writers” are TOO poorly educated TO know the difference between the TWO…I mean three…words.

      • Emmanuel

No; not writers. It’s rather so many Americans that are TOO poorly educated… . Just check the comments that follow most news posts and you’ll see what I mean.

  • Sandra

Rogue hippo?? It’s a bull and you’re constantly in its territory. Sounds like it’s just a hippo being a hippo. If you cross over into their habitat, you have to assume the risks. I’m glad he’s okay and may his friend RIP.

  • http://yahoo nolan welch

The hippo wouldn’t swallow anything that he couldn’t “poop” out ha ha

  • jack

Sounds like Ahab and the Great White Whale. When I hear that he is harpooned to the beast’s side with his arm beakoning to his crew…

  • Judy

The Bible is true and yes Jonah DID get swallowed by a big fish.

  • Robin

By all means lets kill the hippo. Morons. Maybe stay out of the Hippos territory and leave them alone!

  • Bob

“What happened next is enough to make any reader shudder in terror.” Gee, thanks for the ridiculous ad-lib Amanda. I(t actuallu took away from the story.

  • kevin fennick

This reminds me of the story in regards to Jonah. God had to be with this man also. The hippo could have eaten him which is unusual for that species because they are not into killing humans. Hipps definitely are respected because even Crocks are afriad of them.

    • rastaleefunk

That’s so not true @ kev fen..hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal species..

    • Holly

Really? Unusual? The 300+ people per year who are killed by hippos would probably disagree with you.

  • PGJ

You were not there when Mr. Templer was swallowed by the Hippo either, why is that believable, but not the story of Jonah?

    • Ashley

Umm, maybe the fact that he is still alive. Lives with the injuries. Other people who are still alive saw it happen. Oh, and its not a fantastic story!

    • Holly

Probably because he was around to tell his story, and because there were other people there who were witnesses? As opposed to a book that has been translated and re-translated for thousands of years and interpreted in so many different ways that no one even knows what the original said anymore?

  • Michael

Interesting how this story turned into a biblical argument. PS – For the person(s) who keep talking about a book being written thousands of years ago. History of the US was writtent hundreds of years ago…no TV, no radio, etc. So are we to believe that George Washington didn’t exist. Let’s go back further. Rome, Greece, Nero, Alexander…..all fictional characters? Morons….

    • Holly

Yeah, except those are HISTORY BOOKS. It was HISTORY recorded by people who existed at the time. The Bible is not a history book, it’s a collection of stories and fables.

  • cmiller

It is written 2nd Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; The bible is still the best selling book in the world…if you take the time to read it..you will see that everything starting in the Old testament has continued to come to pass…and you can see what is going on in the world….the signs of the last days before Jesus returns, is also in the bible, read the book of Daniel…

    • Kathy

The Bible says….”Every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus is Lord of all”.. You’ll believe it one day.. And then it will be too late!!

  • Gartmore

The hippo should have swallowed Obama.

    • Jamie

LOL! Nah, it would leave a bad taste in it’s mouth.

      • Dixiejet

    • Holly

Yes, everything is about Obama and liberals and Republicans and Americans, or else religion. It can’t just be a story about a guy who went toe-to-toe with a hippo.

I’m really tired of Americans continuously hijacking threads to whine about their political leanings and tell people they’re going to Hell for not believing in God.

  • Leslie

He did not get “swallowed” by a hippo if the hippo only had him in it’s mouth.

  • Kathy H.

What an amazing story! It just proves all sorts of things that “can’t possibly happen” can indeed happen. So Jonah was swallowed by a whale. I’ve noticed all the “impossible” and implausible things documented in the Bible as truth, are one by one being validated by man’s “science” and by actual events occuring today! Like ‘earthquakes in diverse places’- one moved Chile 12 feet north! Like the ‘earth opened and swallowed up’ those in rebellion to God – massive sinkholes taking whole neighborhoods! Yeah, God definitely exists and is proving it every day, unfortunately some still aren’t paying attention.

      Uh….that’s called climate change.

Can anyone just stick to the story

I think that they should outlaw Hippo’s….I am afraid to think what will happen if they get into the hands of the wrong people….

the Bible is a CODE (notice the website of my personal journey that was just like Jonah (sign of the last days) and what that really means:

it is the experience of being swallowed by the singularity (zero point of existence) and being RECREATED through that experience: Jonah means DOVE and represents the WHOLE house of Israel that must ENTER their inner heart (house left desolate) which is entering the “DAY OF THE LORD” and their judgment and then being recreated, hence becoming a NEW CREATION……a NEW covenant of heart and mind:

    • http://www.network54.com/Forum/616906/ Yvonne Gordon

the last days are here but these are not the last days of the earth but the last days of the ‘world as we know it’ and a NEW BEING will emerge from this transformation we are all being FORCED through; The Bible says it is like a woman in travail and she must bring forth the “NEW MAN” and this is the baptism into Jesus name:

religion didn’t tell us the truth because they didn’t know the truth which is why it says God will do a NEW THING in the earth, a woman (the heart of mankind) will compass a MAN (Jesus) and that means the “heart will surround Jesus) and the NEW MIND will be his GLORY, hence a new heart (MAN) and a new mind (woman) is the NEW creation that will emerge from this transformation or conversion experienced prepared for all mankind:

You are willing to kill a hippo that attack you in the water where it lives? That’s like me coming into your house and you attack me but I get away but want to return to kill you for what you did. The hippo was protecting its home and itself like you would do. Glad he didn’t died but still crazy for trying to hunt down the hippo

  • Robby

What is really funny is that alot of you nonbelievers believe you have a Brain but you have never seen it.

    • Lisa K

We’re not non-believers, we just don’t bet our life savings that something in the Bible is 100% true or not. It was written as a guide as to how we are supposed to live, that’s it. It’s good to have an open mind…..you know, just in case.

  • steve

and 9 months later Honey Boo Boo was born.

  • ken hauer

Jonah was swallowed by a whale shark (a.k.a. a Jonah fish)……… which happens to be the biggest “fish” in the ocean. look it up!!!!

  • Ashley

Whew! How dare someone voice an opinion against the bible! (sarcasam) I dont see the point in arguing over something none of you can prove or dis-prove! It seems that some you believers need to shove your faith onto everyone to keep it strong! You act as-if it is somehow hurting you that someone else (and a total stranger at that) says something you dont agree with! Very childish!
And BTW, the stories in the bible were never meant to be taken literally, they are metaphors!

  • Maina Wanjaoh

Why such a big argument? Those who believe Jonah was swallowed, you will have a chance to ask him how it was in the berry of the fish! If you believers do not find him there, then the non-believers will have a chance to ask him…if they will have time to spare for such niceties!!

  • http://buttf*ck.com Justin

Jonah swallowed my nuts muffakka.. Just like his sh*tty little plant. He was a meadow dwellar and god didn’t even like his non-beleevin weevin *ss… Job on the other hand was a mofo.. poor guy. We kicked it on Nebulan the other day choppin up the 3rd coming.. hope y’all know. It is a little different then ya tawt like a baws.

  • Jeff

typical christian; using scientific evidence when it reinforces their point and then refuting all scientific evidence when they want us to believe in a goofy misinterperated bible verse…

    • Tony

It’s funny, because I find the same type of arguments within science. If you don’t see this, then I suggest you look deeper at the differing opinions in science regarding consciousness, Quantum, etc.

      • Holly

Differing scientific opinions based on the fact that we don’t have the correct technology to interpret information yet isn’t the same as having actual proof and denying it because it doesn’t fit with what the Bible says. One is ignorance, the other is willful ignorance.

  • Catherine Evans

The hippo exhaled………..aka a political argument

  • Dave

Wow! This dude gets swallowed by a hippo and everyone starts screming about the bible. Talk about ADD. Get on topic folks.

  • Bails

Yikes! That is a scary picture, and scary story. Note to self: do not mess with hippos!

Technically, if the guy didn’t go all the way down the hatch…he didn’t get swallowed. He just got chewed a little bit. I think it’s a great article nonetheless. Good job Amanda. Keep the Crocodile Dundee animal stories coming. I like to hear about animals getting it in. lol. I bet you he will respect that “rogue” hippos territory now!!!

  • felisha

how did this article turn into an arguemnt about the bible and religion? Everybody calm down… and lets just focus on the story.

  • Stephen

It is “funny” to read the comments about the Bible. The “western” world has the most religious freedom yet some are ridiculing the Bible. I am from Asia (and still resides in Asia) and first came across the Bible at age 13. Now I am 50 with kids of my own. My parents were then generally not supportive of their son reading a “western religious book” although they tolerated it. For some of my friends, they were not so lucky. They had to hide it in the letterbox as that was the only safe place to keep a Bible. I thank God my father became a Christian at about age 70. I was most joyful for him.

    • grandmother

Wow! Your wonderful story is a great Faith story. No bad mouthing people just stating your belief. God’s Blessing to you Stephen

  • Charlie Ant

You really need to thank God! I am from Zambia. Hippos and crocodiles have claimed many lives perhaps second to motor vehicles in as far as accidentals deaths on our waters masses are concerned. Sad news for Evans.

  • jobo

Whales aren’t fish they are mammals..and for all u bible pushers, u also believe a man was cured of blindness by another man without a laser…the bible is a book of fairy tales..don’t live ur life by anything in it other than the golden rule..do unto others as you would have them do unto u…religions are stupid just live life…that’s y we r here…

My favorite part of the bible is where I shut that drawer in the hotel room and go to sleep.

  • jobo

Oooo and thanking god for a freaking hippo tearing u to shreds sounds like a great idea…lmao how bout thanking the hippo for having to breathe and not killing u

  • Joe Black

This is about a Hippo not the Bible get your heads straight! There’s enough fighting going on in this crazy world as it is.

  • DAL

Leave it to a bull hippo to start an irreconcilable theological argument. It was a hippo that swallowed the man and found him so distasteful that he vomited him out of his mouth. You have to really be rank to be gastronomically repugnant to a hippo…don’t you think?

    • Lisa K

Maybe the guy had a bible in his backpocket and that’s why the hippo spit him out. Athiest hippos…what’s the world coming to?

  • http://yahoo debbie

I am so glad you are ok, paul. and sorry your friend didn’t make it.i think the hardest part would be to go back after that. I wouldn’t do it. I know “get back on that horse” but, not me. best of luck to you.

  • Tommy

Really people. REALLY! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that is not debatable. By the way, I believe in The God of the Bible and believe that it’s contents are true!

The Bible is telling the truth. Try to understand it

  • yogi

To the people that say a whale can’t swallow a man. Sperm Whale could swallow a man could it happen maybe but not likely. That being said can’t prove it didn’t happen can’t prove it did.

The Bible says….”Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord”….Belive it now or belive it then.. Only difference.. It’s too late then… Today is the day of Salvation!!

  • lakeshire

It’s refreshing to see a lot of people still defending the faith.

  • Pete

In “The Straight Dope” website http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2294/have-any-real-life-jonahs-been-swallowed-by-whales-and-lived

They analyse an 1891 story of a man claimed to have been swallowed by a whale and concluded it never happened but did concede the following.

“Sperm whales are capable of swallowing humans. They live on squid, which they swallow whole. In 1955 a 405-pound squid was removed intact from the belly of a sperm whale.” So it is theorectically possible.

  • pocket

The Bible is not into proving anything to man. You can approve or disprove as fitting to you. Anything and everything in the bible is like this, if you want to know and accept the truth according to what is related in scripture, you have to 1st believe then you get to know, you don’t get to know then you believe. To add, there is no point in seeking it out because you will never get to know no matter how much you search according to scripture.

    Romans 11:33, Ecclesiastes 8:17
