Shailene Woodley Says Jennifer Lawrence Convinced Her To Star In “Divergent”By: Tobias Roth - March 10, 2014
Well, it seems that two of the hottest young stars around right now are friends, and giving each other advice on roles. Jennifer Lawrence may have helped to give a jump-start to Shailene Woodley’s career when telling her to take her role in Divergent.
The two actresses have quite a bit in common since Jennifer Lawrence has already become a huge star, partly due to The Hunger Games series, and Shailene Woodley may be able to do the same with the help of the upcoming Divergent series.
Both film series’ were based on young adult books, and have big followings, although The Hunger Games certainly gained the attention of more people before the release of the film. Woodley may not be a household name like Lawrence yet, but she is already a rising star.
Erik Feig, Lionsgate motion picture group co-president, was actually the one who enlisted the help of Jennifer Lawrence in order to recruit Shailene Woodley for the part. The film recently released its last trailer during coverage of the Olympics, and people continue to get excited about the new film.
According to Woodley, a series of emails were sent to her from the 23-year-old Lawrence that said “You must do it. You will not regret it for a second. Yes, there are some hard things, but there are so many beautiful things that will come from an opportunity like this.’ ” It must have been enough, since after that, she went back to Feig, and said that she would do it.
Divergent shares a handful of similarities with The Hunger Games, and while it is based on a book trilogy by Veronica Roth opposed to Suzanne Collins, it is also based in a dystopic future. The upcoming film features a central female character with plenty of strength, and determination, in order to do what she wants, much like Katniss Everdeen.
Woodley was hesitant to join the series at first as it would bind her for several years, and she did not want to be contracted for more than one film. After appearing on the television show The Secret Life Of The American Teenager for five seasons, she has turned to independent films, and is determined to stick to that path once the Divergent series concludes.
Shailene Woodley, at 22 years old, has been in several films already, and received great praise for her role in The Descendants in 2007, along with The Spectacular Now, which came out last year. In addition to Divergent, she is set to star in The Fault In Our Stars, one of the most anticipated films of the year for some people, and also based on a young adult book.
The first installment in the Divergent franchise starring Shailene Woodley is set to hit theaters on March 21.
