The Legend of Korra returned after a fifteen-month break last night on Nickelodeon, in a special one-hour premiere. Book 2: Spirits debuted Friday evening to a mass of loyal followers, in a two-part premiere; the first half of the show was titled, “Rebel Spirits,” followed by the second part of the episode, “The Southern Lights.” The animated series, created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, is the second part of the Avatar Korra creation.
The voices of two main characters, brothers Bolin and Mako, are done by P.J. Byrne (of Horrible Bosses and BET’s The Game fame) and David Faustino (he played the infamous Bud Bundy on Married...With Children for several years). Bolin and Mako are Korra’s best friends; Bolin (Byrne) is a quiet earth-bender, while his fiery brother, Mako, (Faustino) is a fire-bender. The two actors recently sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to talk about the upcoming premiere of the second season of “Korra.”
When asked, “If there’s a message “Korra” has for kids, or people of any age, who watch the show, what do you think it is?” Byrne said he thinks of the show’s premise in the acronym of “the 4 H’s”: History, honor, heart and humor. Faustino agreed, adding that he believes the number one lesson to be learned from Korra is this: Don’t ever give up, which is a great lesson for kids (and adults) of all ages.
“Korra” follows in the footsteps of Konietzko and DiMartino’s first creation, The Last Airbender, which aired from 2005 to 2008; there were three books in the “Airbender” series. The Last Airbender won numerous choice awards, including a Peabody award, an Annie award and a prize at the Kid’s Choice Awards in 2010.
Entertainment Weekly described Friday night’s premiere as having a “mix of family drama, epic action and the series’ signature comedy.” Other than that, there are few details about the rest of the season and series, keeping its audience in suspense. Byrne and Faustino did say that they are reluctant to share details not because of a secret factor, but because they are constantly recording episodes of different seasons, and want to make sure they don’t give anything away!
You can find out all of the details for yourself when you catch Byrne, Faustino and Korra on the next episode of The Legend of Korra; the second episode of the season, “Civil Wars: Part 2” will air Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m. on Nickelodeon.
