Plus-Size Barbie Doll: Is This a Bad Idea?

[ Life]

The Facebook page Plus Size Modeling has stirred up quite the controversy by asking whether toy companies should put out a Barbie that has an expanded waistline. The page has gotten thousands of responses, with many debating whether such a toy would promote poor health or encourage a positive self-image.

Anyone who has ever examined a Barbie doll knows that her proportions aren’t exactly in line with the average female’s. If a woman had the waist size of a Barbie doll, her waist would be 16 inches compared to 37.5 inches, the waist size for the average American woman. People have discussed whether the current Barbie doll promotes anorexia and other eating disorders for years, so Plus Size Modeling decided to see how people feel about a plus-size Barbie.

The question posed by Plus Size Modeling a few days ago was, “Should toy companies start making plus size Barbie dolls?” An image of a plus-size Barbie doll was included and users were instructed to ‘like’ the page if they supported such a Barbie doll and to comment if they disagreed. More than 40,000 people have liked the image so far and just over 5,000 people have commented.

Check out the original Facebook post below.

Of the 5,000 comments Plus Size Modeling has received, it appears that quite a few users are in agreement that an average-size Barbie doll should be made, but not the one in the picture. One user wrote, “love the fact of having a realistic and curvy doll, but way too many chins is non realistic, it makes us plus size women seem obese and unhealthy.” Another woman echoed a similar sentiment: “Nothing wrong with a curvy Barbie….real women have curves, show girls it’s ok to have meat on their bones, but the double chins are a little much!!”

The plus-size Barbie photo was submitted to Worth1000 in 2011, so it has been around for a while, but began making waves just days ago. Check out the original photo that shows a plus-size Barbie and a traditional Barbie side-by-side:

Here’s my question. can you actually buy one of these? Are they being sold?

  • http://yahoo.com karen

The original Barbie isnt realistic, if you choose to make Barbie look like the average woman or teen change the hair, make-up, features that are on the extreme. Make the new Whats Up Barbie look plus size and beautiful. Loose the chins and mini feet because I am plus size and have 1 chin and have adult not Kid feet.

    • DepthTested

They’re dolls for pete’s sake. Of course they’re not to proportion. next you’re going to whine because the heads on Bobble heads are too big for their bodies. Jeez, you’re not only fat, you’re stupid, too.

  • More Issues Than Just Weight

Okay America, enough of the politically correct garbage. Being fat is neither healthy nor is it attractive. No one sits around and says, gee I want to be 30, 50, 100, or 200 pounds overweight. Hell, I am 20 pounds overweight and I can’t freaking stand it.

We have to get serious about this topic and ask why the hell is everyone getting so fat? Yes, there are lazy people and yes, people are glued to the internet. However, lets dig a little deeper. Girls are now having periods at 7 years old. That is unheard of in nature and science. Twelve year old girls look 20 and fifteen year old girls look to be in their middle 20s. Girls simply did not look like they do today back in the 1980′s. Something is in the food and it is changing us and I don’t think that is a good thing.

Being fat is not a happy thing. Yes, we see some of these women that put on false fronts and tell how happy they are to be so overweight. Please. That is nonsense. I know many overweight people and trust me, they aren’t happy. In fact, they are miserable.

Let’s not encourage our kids to get fat. Let’s not condition our kids to think that being fat is acceptable. What happens to a society that is fat and complacent? Look throughout history. What happens? That society gets destroyed or suppressed. Especially, if the society is fat, complacent, dumbbed downed, and unarmed. America we are becoming fat, complacent, dummbed down and they are coming after our guns. Believe me, I don’t like guns either. I hate them, but it is undeniable there is a push to disarm this nation and that is not a good thing. Look at every tyrant that lived. The first thing he did was disarm the population.

This may seem like a small issue, but it is not. There are many other issues that go along with this. Many. For those of you that were alive in the 70s and 80s. Pull out your pictures. No one looked like we do today. Not even close. Something is wrong in our society.

    • No name

Sorry. But your what’s wrong in our society.

      • J.

So you think morbid obesity should be encouraged in our daughters and granddaughters? Sorry, but you’re the rest of what’s wrong in our society. Strong, healthy bodies that have an optimal ratio of lean body tissue to fatty tissue should be encouraged in young girls. Barbies based on this body type would be of various sizes, but most of them would be somewhat larger in the waists, hips, and thighs. Naturally, the unnatural shape of the original Barbie should be a thing of the past. However, epitomizing a body type that lends itself to a higher probability of serious diseases should also be unacceptable. Just because Obese Barbie makes you feel better about yourself, does not make her a safe role model for children.

      • http://WebroNe/Life dacard

        You must be overweight

        • JJ

How about we stop being so judgemental of people based on appearences! Hmmkay? I think that was the whole point. Because it is no longer acceptable to openly judge people on race, their “body art”, or thier sexuality, it is now acceptable to become obsessed with other people’s waistlines. Really? As a nurse, I see as many skinny people have massive strokes and heart attacks as fat people. Actually, I see more skinny people with untreated health issues (Diabetes, high blood pressure) because of the ignorant assumtion that they are healthy because they have a normal BMI.

      • DepthTested

Except for the weird rant about their being stuff in our food that makes us fat—yeah, they’re called calories—her post made a lot of sense. We shouldn’t encourage people to be fat anymore than we encourage them to act black. Neither ever leads to anything good, well, maybe you can dance good, but I digress. Give the little fat girl down the street the skinny Barbie. With any luck she’ll puke herself to an acceptable weight. And if not, she’ll have a gun to end her misery. Seems wise to me.

      • N,

No, the fact that you do not know the difference between “your” and “you’re” is what’s wrong with society.

    • Jim

Amen!! I was going to make a comment, but “More Issues Than Just Weight” said it all!

    • Barbie is the look to promote?

OK – in response to the overweight comment. While growing up I was overweight by other kids standards. I actually was not that bad. I honestly tipped the scales at 155 for 5’6. My body frame was large. I didn’t have the small non-existent look. I felt horrible about myself. I felt fat and was unhappy. Why? Because of what we promote as healthy. MMMMmmmm… Is model weight healthy? Is eating disorders to keep that weight down healthy?

By the way we’ve all seen what Barbie would look like in real life. Pretty bad, and very unhealthy.

Now on to plus size Barbie. If it is done well without the extra chin with a normal growing weight not WAY overweight. That is healthy. So why not? Actually you would rather your child to be that healthy weight than the regular Barbie.

      • Come On People

Could everyone stop trying to justify people being overweight….large frame…please. And– Eat disorders go both ways…hello over eating/food addiction. Barbie should stay Barbie. A DOLL IS NOT THE PROBLEM

    • I Remember

I remember when women were made fun of because they had flat butts. They had flat butts because they weren’t fat as hell.

You are right. I went to high school in the late 80s and early 90s. We had one guy on our football team that was over 300 pounds and nowadays, teams are freaking huge. We had one girl that looked much older than she was. In fact, she was dating a guy in his late 30s. Now, every girl looks like that girl I went to school with.

People may disagree with you, but you are right. Our society has changed so much. Pulling out old pictures is a good idea. It gives you something to literally see. I laugh sometimes when women wonder why guys are going after underage girls. It is because none of the girls look underage. It is that simple. Go out to the internet and look at some of these pictures comparing how things used to be and how they are now. You will see.

      • @I Remember

I agree with you. Girls look nothing like girls anymore. Look at all the internet porn. You can’t tell if a girl is underage or overage. The only time you can tell is if the girl is super tiny, but otherwise you have 15 year old girls that look in their mid twenties and you just can’t tell. Heck, my daughter is as big as my wife and she is 13. How does that happen? I understand genetics and all that, but really girls are totally different. I think the guy above talking about menstrual cycles has a really good point. That isn’t natural.

It is crazy. All of it is crazy.

        • SharkBait

This is literally the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Who uses porn in an argument?

          Pervert.

    • Tammy

AWESOME post. I couldn’t have said it better myself. I completely agree. Bringing this doll glorifies obesity and everything that comes with it, including Diabetes. We’re telling our children that it’s OK to be this big. It’s not. It comes with a price. Being overweight puts you at risk for heart attacks, strokes, and Diabetes. It can cost you your life. Putting this obese doll on the market glorifies THAT.

      • Jen

“Bringing this doll glorifies obesity and everything that comes with it, including Diabetes.” —Exactly!

    • David

dictators LOVE guns. guns are evil.

      • @David

Dictators love guns when they have all the guns and no one else does.

    • Christina

GMO’s!!!!! Wake up America!!! Funny, gmo crops are banned in other countries but not here, funny obesity is an epidemic here but not in other countries. If you’re fat and unhappy about it, do something about it. If you’re fat and happy about it, AWESOME for you! Honestly! But creating a fat Barbie? Really? Besides, when I was a little girl, I wouldn’t have chosen fat Barbie over ridiculously skinny Bernie and neither will girls today.

  • Jana

why does Plus Size mean fat and not healthy? the doll has gone to one extreme to the next.

  • Ella

This is a TERRIBLE idea. Obesity is a serious problem NOT something to be celebrated or emulated. Women should not be shamed because of it, but it is not something to aspire to or something that should be normalized. There is something between anorexia and obesity and it is called healthy. Glamorizing obesity is as dangerous as glamorizing unhealthy thin women. I’ll get on board with a realistic, healthy Barbie. Not the obese Barbie. She has three chins and abdominal obesity that is a symptom of metabolic syndrome. She probably has Type II diabetes as well. No, no, no.

  • Sam

No, this looks horrid. Don’t make fattie dolls. Just make a realistic Barbie, not an obese one. “Fattie-fat Barbie” is just a bad idea.

  • http://yahoo linda

    WTF???
I’m an American who has lived in Europe for a long time. I am shocked by the obesity problem in my country and how some people try to make it seem
normal! I’m not saying any one should necessarily be stick thin, but come on, morbidly obese at astronomical numbers? I live in France, have lived in Italy, and traveled all over, and people love to eat and even spend hours at the table, but are not getting obese! Sure, a bit overweight can happen, but how do my fellow Americans get like this? What are they chowing down? WTF?

    • @Linda

I am from European decent but born in America. It is a hopeless cause to try and convince Americans that the rest of the world does not live like them. Hopeless. Americans think their way of life is the best way of life.

For crimes that wouldn’t even be prosecuted in Europe, Americans receive decades in prison. Then the country makes money off those very same people in their prison work plants. It is shameful.

Trying to convince an American their way of life is flawed is a fruitless pursuit. After all, if they will send their own people to prison for 55 years for selling something as harmless as marijuana —- they will think anything is okay. Yes, that is a real story. Go to change.org and read the petition to get that man some help. Send a person to prison for life for some pot. Crazy.

It is not ALL Americans because there are many good Americans. But there are some Americans that really have never left their own states and have no idea how the rest of the world lives.

  • Carrie

How about healthy weight Barbie? These are two extremes being shown here. Not everyone with a normal bit of extra has three chins like the example here. Must we overdue everything in society? Such silliness.

    • Betsy

A healthy weight barbie has also been proposed and I would be in full support of its release :)

      http://www.today.com/news/normal-barbie-uses-real-womens-measurements-6C10533511

  • Brian

I think it’s a good idea. It’s about time Barbie gave girls a more realistic view of the human female body. I know many attractive women, but none of them have the unnatural look of a plastic and rubber figurine (except possibly porn stars. but that’s different problem).

  • Diana

The body type looks fine, but 3 chins? Really??

    • Jen

This doll looks morbidly obese and that’s not fine. All Barbie needs now is a pack of cigarettes and 40oz while driving in her convertible that she probably doesn’t even fit into now….all unhealthy…all ridiculous, but all would be right with the world? Come on!

    • @Diana

The body type is fine? It is huge! That woman would be suffering from diabetes, heart conditions and so many other ailments it isn’t even funny.

There is nothing fine about that doll.

  • dcm

This whole one-size-fits-all thing has got to stop. People aren’t the same size. Is a “normal” size woman more likely to be healthy than a “plus size” woman? Statistics say yes. But only a doctor can know whether Jennifer Aniston is healthier than Sara Ramirez. BTW, plus size DOES NOT equal obese. Sara Ramirez is plus size. Melissa McCarthy is obese. That being said, they both seem to be very successful actresses.

  • Ron Joseph

They screwed the pooch with the black one.. then they made the disabled one so why not make a fat lazy trailer dwelling welfare recipient one.

    • @Ron Joseph

What is next? The ignorant redneck doll that goes by the name of Ron Joseph.

Way to go. Make fun of black people, disabled people, and poor people. If God is just, after you die, he will send you back to earth as a fat black person who is disabled and poor. Maybe then, that would teach you to have compassion for people.

  • Hoppys Bar 20

Whats next. Why should this even be considered.
Somehow the fat lobby has infiltrated the Doll industry.
    Not only ridiculous.

  • http://www.pinterest.com/candacendiaye Candace

I don’t think a Barbie at either extreme is a good thing. The standard Barbie is disturbingly thin & misproportioned, and sends a bad message to young girls. But so does the larger Barbie. Firstly, you can be considered plus sized and not have 3 chins. That’s just insulting.

I think the best thing is to scrap both the original and the “plus size” Barbie, and have Barbies that look more like the average, healthy person. If you’re going to have a variety of Barbies, make the variety about body shape. Stick thin girls get told they aren’t the ideal as well (and this is coming from someone on the opposite end of the spectrum). Curvy is beautiful, athletic is beautiful, and thin is beautiful.

This is just another example of our society going to extremes. Clearly, Barbie has to be anorexic or have 3 chins. The only message that sends is that if you aren’t one, you’re the other. That’s not a healthy body image either.

The problem with this entire issue is that we’re not focusing on being healthy or even having healthy self-esteem. This is about looking a certain way to fit stereotypes that society has decided are acceptable.

    • Betsy

What do you think of this one? It’s based on the measurements of real, HEALTHY women and I think its just what our girls need to see :)

  • W.G.

Who cares about a Doll. What about the Pencil Thin fashion models.
There’s plus size models. Why aren’t there different shape and size, short and medium height models. EVERYONE is NOT TALL.

  • Monica

What is next? A fat ass Ms. America!!! For goodness sakes, it is a DOLL! Let little girls play and enjoy themselves with their dolls. Keep the damn grown-ups away from the kids toys.

  • Anna

Am I the only one that thinks there is nothing wrong with the original Barbie doll. It’s a doll people an inanimate object. Girls have body issues because of people in the world, how they are treated by peers and/or family members. I know this is a little off topic but people just need to realize it’s a doll and making it look curvier is not going to help with body image. I do agree if you are going to make a bigger doll just make her look like the average woman.

  • Maureen

I’m sorry, but I have been overweight my entire life, and I played with Barbies all through my youth, There is no way that playing with Barbies hurt my self esteem, or made me anxious about my weight! It’s a doll for goodness sake. Self esteem comes from parents, family members and peers as you’re growing up, the rest is up to you, not a doll. As an “plus-size” person, and let’s be realistic that means I’m fat,we should not promote anything that says “fat” is okay, IT’S NOT. Let’s work with these kids to be healthier, so they don’t end up like a lot of us.

  • JB

It’s one extreme to the other. However, it wouldn’t be a totally awful idea if she didn’t have a “double chin”, realistic or not there is nothing attractive about a “double chin”, and nobody wants one. In fact, the “double chin” Barbie could be seen as poking fun at “plus size” girls and could even create a complex.

  • bob

It’s ridiculous to cave in to every specialty group. Dolls help kids dream of something to aspire to. Is this how you want your kids to grow up? There were no obese children in my elementary school; now that’s mostly what they are, so we have to pacify them? Parents need to go back to cooking healthy food and get off the fast food and processed food kick.

  • MS

This Barbie is TOO fat. They should have a larger size barbie for sure but not morbidly obese! This would be medically dangerous. She’d be diabetic barbie and heart disease barbie. She looks like a biggest loser contestant. In fact if they did release a Barbie like this they could call it “lets lose weight barbie” and sell it with a barbie gym and workout clothes. Then they could also have her fridge stocked with little plastic healthy fruits and vegetables. And they could have a smaller barbie she becomes after losing weight. Not the anorexic one just a normal size. We dont want to encourage kids to be anorexic or obese. We just want them to be healthy and happy to be who they are.

  • People Wonder

People wonder why porn use has exploded in the past 10 years. I think it is because the weight of the average woman in porn is 117 and the average American woman weighs 167. If you take out the BBW porn actresses, the average weight for a porn start is about 105-110. That is a 60 pound difference between what men see in porn and what they see on the street every day.

I have been on porn sets and believe me the women are tiny. Porn is all smoke and mirrors though. Drugs, surgeries, camera angles, etc. But the women are very small. I also know from focus groups that study this stuff is that many men watch so much porn because they know in the real world, they might never meet a girl that is in that good of shape or that interested in sex.

People wonder why there is so much divorce and I think weight plays a huge part in that. If your spouse becomes very unattractive and stops having sex, it leads to problems. I know this is not politically correct but it is the truth. There is only so much you can take of your spouse stuffing their face and not having sex. In the past 40 years, what has gone up — divorce and weight and also the rise of feminism. But that is a different topic.

  • Barry

Plus size would be okay, but this sample looks like Honey Boo-Boo’s mom, which is not okay.

  • Tymira Smith

I feel as though you should make a new version of Barbie where she looks like the average women whether she’s big, medium size, or small. Beause every girl is beautiful in their own way. I feel as though not even the skinny people can relate to Barbie. You should make a Barbie who everyone can relates to and has the same problems any other average women does. Teach them positive messages like don’t bully. For example, instead of her watching someone get bullied she could be the one who gets bullied. Teach these girls how to overcme obstacles that may occur in their life. Make more cancer Barbie’s, different nationality Barbie’s, lesbian Barbie’s, blind Barbie, middle class Barbie, or maybe even a handicap Barbie. Make something each and every girl can relate to or have in common with Barbie. Its not just skinny and big girls who goes through things and because its not all about them because those up there are also your real women who little girls can live up to and relate to. Let’s be honest here Barbie’s perfect noone can ever be perfect. Teach them that its ok not to be perfect and that their not alone. Barbie’s perfect, the things she goes through noone can relates to it. I’m not saying take away original Barbie I’m just saying add on to her character and personality make an police Barbie, lawyer Barbie, or a firefighter Barbie. I rest my case and you guys can’t disagree on what I’m saying here think about your children or when you were a kid. Its 2013 going to 2014 theres bigger problems than worrying about boys, ect. I’ll stand by my word no matter what anyone thinks. I’m 14 years old and I know some of the problems girls go through.

  • Evolving

Stop confusing children.Make dolls like real people, period.

  • Jaz

I believe the barbie we know should be changed to a barbie who reflects average size of women now a days. But morbidly obese is not good either because it’s unhealthy. So either extreme is bad. Plus size doesn’t always mean you have a double chin. what’s up with the feet they are the same size as the regular barbie and you know even feet and ankle changes if you are bigger.

  • Jaz

Sorry I meant to say triple chin, who has a TRIPLE chin?. They could’ve done a bit of a double chin if anything, but not Triple I mean come on.

  • jim

Does she have to be obese? There is a difference between plus size and obese, and promoting obesity is just as bad as promoting anerexia. Nothing wrong with a curvy regular sised woman. And to clear it up, yes I am implying that obesity is a serious american issue and its not ok. If toy companies do this, little kids will think its ok to let themselves go and not care.

  • DepthTested

By the way, Michelle Obama says it’s bad to be fat, and well, we could all use a lecture on fatness from the Amazon in the White House.

  • JL Owen

It’s an interesting concept and I do not see anything wrong with plus size dolls. Everything we have and see in all areas of our life is geared to being “thin”. It is certainly not realistic in the real world. People come in all shapes and sizes and many overweight people are not that way due to over indulging. Many of us actually have medical issues or not inherret the “skinny” gene. There are beautiful people in all sizes, not just one size. I’ve been on both sides of the fence so I know how both feels and received. I would love to see beauty in dolls become more realistic so bring on plus size. Double chins are fine in some dolls but I’d put out different sizes and adjust accordingly. I’d be one of the first to purchase one to add to my collection. Good luckand Ihope enough peple will accept this new line.

  • SharkBait

I have mixed thoughts on this…although it is important for girls to accept themselves and not chase an unrealistic goal, does playing w/ Barbie really prompt girls to seek out actually “being” the doll they played w as a child? Seems to me, they will be much more influenced by the images surrounding them at the time they go through puberty than the image of a doll they owned at 6 or 7. Women in the media, for example, from news anchors to models all promote an unrealistic image for the average woman. Why not blame it on that…and not on a doll?

Maybe, in the end, we should, as parents, teach our girls image is only a small piece of who they are, instead of focusing on a doll that has been around for 60 years.

what about the awful message about dressing like a hooker, and she is too fat to be likeable

How about making a realistic doll that is healthy with a little meat on her body (with curves etc) so you know its a female and not a male in drag. All the models you see in print look like guys not females. I am five feet two inches tall and weigh 120-127 would you considered me over weight ( I am top heavy like Dolly Parton with some muscle but not as much as a body builder)I know overweight people and obese people with and with out 3 chins. If I ever had a girl child I would not buy her a Barbie doll. Think about it Barbie suppose to be a girls toy doll with the figure of an underweight women. The doll is just marketed for the female race to feel less of a person. Take the American Girl Doll series for girls, they are toy doll and not marketed as sex toys as Barbie are

This is a terrible idea. The original Barbie was great at the time and had no ill intentions. Barbie should stay the same as always. We expect Barbie to be as she is….I don’t think any thing bad is happening as a result of the Barbie we all know and love. All the ethnic and different culture Barbies are also great! But, let’s not do the ridiculous by selling double and triple-chinned Barbies! We shouldn’t encourage obesity by making Barbie “fat”. If a toymaker wanted to come out with a doll that was more normal…pleasingly plump…NOT OBESE, but just a little more rounded than Barbie, then so be it…no issues. But, changing Barbie from what she was intended is a very BAD IDEA!

No! If you think Barbie sends the wrong message to skinny then don’t send the wrong message the other way. Young overweight girls should be encouraged to be healthy. How about proportionately correct athletic Barbie to encourage fitness, physical activity, and healthy eating. Sell her with a bottle of water and a Nature Valley granola bar.
