Peter Parker, otherwise known as Spider-Man, dies in the latest issue of the long running comic series. It’s not too surprising either as both Marvel and DC have been killing off characters to only resurrect them in later reboots and retellings. The surprising part is how Peter Parker was killed, and that has some fans not too happy with Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott.

For those who don’t mind spoilers, Spider-Man No. 700 sees Peter Parker being defeated by Doctor Octopus. That wouldn’t be too surprising of an ending as Doctor Octopus is one of Spider-Man’s most well known and longest standing villains. What surprised fans is that Doctor Octopus realizes that Spider-Man was actually a force for good in the world and transfers his mind to Parker’s body to continue on as Spider-Man himself.

The death has proven to be somewhat controversial among fans of the character, and they have been voicing their displeasure to series writer Dan Slott on Twitter. Some fans have even taken to sending death threats to Slott, but others have stood up for the writer by sending him praise and well wishes.

All the complaints won’t stop Slott, however, as he is preparing to launch an entirely new Spider-Man series called The Superior Spider-Man. The series will take on a much darker tone, and could prove interesting to long time fans of the man that can do whatever a spider can.

  • Honest Tony

as long as a hero can be resurrected. There is really no harm in changng the flow of the series and story line. But just don’t forget the true loyal fans of the original origin of Spideman. Make them happy because they are the ones that keep you employed!

well I dont want to know how he dies, I still have a long way to get to that issue. I just hope it was an epic death I mean come on he’s Spiderman

  • Radar

Haven’t they done enough to the poor guy?

  • Jonny

Why not… they killed Batman. (“The Dark Knight Rises”)

    • Mark

I love seeing that people say they KILLED Batman. Did everyone leave before the ending. His aircrafts autopilot was fixed by Bruce. Noone knew that untill they recovered the craft at end of show. You cant have Robin with out Batman. Didnt anyone see the Cops name was Robin. Guess Robin becomes the fighter all alone. Yes they SHOW Bruce being burried but i think its just a hanger. Giving them the opportunity to maybe do Batman and Robin movie.

      • eric

Did you not see the whole movie yourself? At the end when they show bruce/batman and catwomen eating outside at that cafe and alfred see them as he said he would hope to one day earlier in the movie.. However I can’t and don’t believe that will be the last batman movie made with christia bale as batman or at least levitt as robin..reading now to that jopseph levitt will be in the justice league movie playing either robin or even batman??

        • Anon

Fools, Blake is not Robin, he’s the next Batman. Note how he “rises” into the cave the same way Bruce did in Batman Beyond, looking up at the bat suit. The entire movie was saying it didn’t matter who was behind the suit (the theme was setting someone up to take his place), and then at the end, Batman and Catwoman used that thing to wipe their slates clean and just live in comfort for once.

Lame. That’s the only word I have for all this. Lame.

Stan Lee — the man who CREATED Spider-Man — is hacked off at this latest development. That ought to tell you something right there.

I still want to get Stan Lee to autograph my copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 — that should help my kids’ college funds…

I understand changing things up to keep it fresh and interesting. However, being that I’ve been a Spiderman fan forever, part of liking and admiring Spiderman is Peter Parker. He is who Spiderman is. Anyone can wear the costume and have similar powers, but it’s the soul and character that makes the super hero. I have a huge issue with this. I’ll have to think about this and decide whether or not I’ll continue to be a Spiderman fan.

    This is so highlander II…

  • characterman

Why is DC Comics & Marvel Comics being like the dinosaurs becoming instinct?

They always do is kill characters, remove characters, change the storyline and respawn themselves from the grave. Just because inprove the storylines and comic books, for better sellings for people to read.

Unreal… I lost every hope of feelings thrus DC Comics & Marvel Comics all together.

And now on… DC Comics & Marvel Comics based adapdaions into Live-Action and Animation. Are for just watching only, not for giving of favorites on DvD anymore.

700 issues and peter parker doesnt get a decent funerial? really ? a super villian takes over for him? maybe for a issue. wouldnt he(doc) see the good in peter and see the wrong he has done. doc oct a second chance….. supiorspiderman. epic fail!

  • thepuniSSher

    wait a sec, Marvel.
look, I guess I dont have a problem with parker dying but why the heck would doc ock – DOC OCK! – take over his body and continue the good fight. that just sounds lame, Ock is old and…gross.

the thing that sets Spidey apart from “darker” heroes(batman, hulk), way too serious heroes (cpt. america, thor, superman)is his wit, one liners and the way he always talks to himself. I dont remember Ock having a sense of humor and I sure as heck dont want to hear Doc Ocks inner thoughts!
I had some interest in Superior Spiderman but now…I’ll pass.

He already died he’s a zombie in another universe remember?

Ok, I’ve been following spiderman since about 1992. This is a good thing. It’s thought provoking. I bought issue seven hundred immediately knowing what was gonna happen cuz of all the internet spoilers which sux. The whole time I was reading I was hoping that it wasnt true, peter parker wasnt dying, hopefully thos spoilers were some disinformation put out by marvel to throw everybody off. they were spot on though. damn it! oh well, I am really intrigued though. it was interesting that dock ock got all of peters memories as peter died and his whole life flashed before his eyes. it was kinda cute and funny seeing dock ock’s mind reliving peters life. and it was really corny when ock gave the speech on the last few pages leading up to proclaiming he is the superior spiderman. I laughed out loud. so okay it’s not all bad. it just really makes ya mad cuz ock didn’t earn any of it, right? but maybe slott is calling ock a victim of circumstance by showing ock will become good now that he has the foundation of peter parkers shared memories. he said he’s forever changed after experiencing them. It the timeless nature/nurture debate. and we all really felt something watching peter die such a heroic death but nobody in his universe saw the sacrifice he made. but he’s a real hero he doesn’t do it for the glory, he said it himself as he died, all he ever wanted was for his loved ones to be safe. it’s a dangerous job being a superhero and when nobody dies for the work then we can start forgetting we’re not just reading a story. these aren’t just stories to alot of us. These superheros are immortal gods to some of us. And they have showed us how we can be hero ourselves and have been steering us in a better direction for longer than most of us have been alive. peter will be back. death is not the end of a god or a superhero. or any of us maybe.

  • aromus

can we bring uncle ben back too? so he can have a sit down with doc oc.

    • theresa

personally I hate spiders they are so creepy. I have seen the Spiderman movies my husband is a fan. I’m Ok with them but not my favorite kind of movie. Everyone has to die one time or another. thats life they could have written a better death than a villan killing a hero what will kids think. how will they feel about protectors in real life. will this make some of them think being a bad villa hurting people and causing trouble will make the superior! we already have kids killing kids in schools now why cant you writters do something to help change that! spiderman could have died of an illness and gave his powers to a child who has been bullied or has no family something to bring out good!

      • Jessica

They didn’t do that because it would quickly change from an amazing comic to one of those stupid comics “with a message” that no one reads. Yeah, the ending wasn’t the best, but it’s way better than a hero dying from some illness in a totally un-heroic way. And contrary to what you may think, when someone kills off a hero, kids don’t want to imitate them. The villian just freakin killed off their hero!

  • Codie

That is just stupid. No wonder why people are upset. Killing off the best supehero ever? Really? And why do it like that? That just doesnt make any sense. Making Doc Oc take over Peter’s body. Doesnt get much dumber then that. What are they going to do next? Kill off Iron Man and make the Mandarin take over his body? Or how about the Hulk and make the Leader take over his mind? Not only is it just plain stupid but not a good money maker int he sense that it shouldnt happen. The only reason why people would want to read it is cause they cant help themselves. Spiderman died? Really? why? When it should be about Spiderman being alive and doing what he does best.

My lil man is very disappointed. He just turned 4 and spiderman has been an idol of his since he can remember. I hope he is brought back in later years when my son is able to read the comics himself.

  • Mjt

This is not a good plot idea, but death threats should be handled as such. It is a story, and the writer is a human being, making him capable of obvious error. That doesn’t mean he deserves to be threatened for his life. The people should be officially charged for such criminal communication in light of the obvious insanity of some.

  • JT

Technically Peter Parker isn’t dead, if anything Doc Ock has given him a form of brain damage to where he thinks he’s Doc Ock trapped in Spidey’s body. No souls were exchanged his brain has just been reprogrammed, this whole thing is just one Fantastic Four team up from being reversed, RIP Doc Ock (at least until your next resurrection)

  • http://webpronews charles lucero

So doc ock gets mj? Gross no matter how you look at it especially since she had no idea.

  • Ivan

Once the financial implications of this hit home, Pete will be making a hasty return.

Even an appropriate exit would see sales plummet, whereas this nonsense will hit the numbers hard in my opinion. The power of my opinion is only -1, but I expect a lot of other -1s….
