Paula Deen Dodges Detractors With Digital Dishes

By: Mike Tuttle - June 28, 2014

Paula Deen got herself in some hot water that would not go away for weeks. Back in July of last year, some comments that Deen had made became public that showed the celebrity chef in what some saw as a racist light. Fans turned on her overnight. Sponsors pulled out from behind her show. And finally Food Network pulled the plug on her entirely.

Since then, Deen has been looking for a way to fight her way back into the light. She got some funding from an investment company. She closed a restaurant. But it looks like she has found the avenue she sought.

Deen is launching a digital cooking network online.

“I’m so excited about my new online network. Y’all can get my recipes, tips and cooking anytime you want — this is for you. I can’t wait to crank up the oven and get cooking for the people I love: my family, my friends and my fans!” Deen said in a press release.

The show will feature cooking videos, tips, and recipes. The set for the new cooking videos will be very similar to her old Food Network set, so it will look to most folks like things have picked right back up where they left off.

The network is a subscription-access tool. It will be available in the usual ways, online via browser, smartphone, tablet, etc. But the exciting prospect for Deen is that smart TVs will be able to get the show in the future.

Perhaps with a new lease on things, Deen will be able to do an end run around all those people who sent her protest mail and butter wrappers. She will be able to take her show directly to those people who want to seed it and are willing to pay to see it, her ‘family, friends, and fans’.

This woman is an annoying syrupy sweet talking person. She is a phony as a $3 bill.

    • Mom2many

This “woman” was said to make racial remarks many years ago in an area of the South in which it was prevalent. That is not to say that those remarks were alright, but Paula for also many years has not felt or acted that way. Perhaps we should all think of the things that we have said as teens or even early 20-somethings and see if we are so perfect that we can warrant throwing stones.

      • Luv

Your comment is what so many feel. However, everyone with comments like yours fail to read every thing Paula has said about certain people. From jokes about her ‘friend’ being blacker than a chalk board to name calling. It is so many things…Yes, we all may have said horrible things, but we are not public impressionable folks. I for one, forgive – but the sad part is, I cannot FORGET. Go “Pioneer Woman’ on Food Network!!!

        • Schteveo R

          Luv,
that’s how things work between friends. Those of us with friends of a different skin color, make fun of each other, and skin color is NOT off the table.

          Sad but true.

          • Luv

            Not in a public forum.

        • Karen Babinski

Paula is not a political leader or a religious leader. She was held accountable for something that she said many years ago in unusual circumstances. What about forgiving Paula. it’s the Christian way. Move on people there are far more problems in the world.

        • James

You are being quite unfair. Perhaps you can find the video where she referred to the young man being as black as a chalk board. She didn’t pull the words “chalk board” out of the air. She was sitting beside a chalk board. Also, I bet you have not forgotten that she referred to him as another son. There was nothing racist about anything she said during that session. Shame on you for trying to make it something racist or inappropriate. He was quite black. I bet you would have said nothing if it were a white person and she said “she/he is whiter than this white wall. Sad for you.

Susan B You are a politically correct POS.

      • Ralph Malph

Why is it that when some does not have something worthwhile to add to the conversation, they resort to rude comments?

        • Schteveo R

          Ralph,
do you ask that question when someone who leans Left, does it to someone from the Right? Because that ‘attack the character of the commenter’ thing is right outta the Lefty Commenter Handbook, from the top of Page One!

        • James

Ralph, so Susan B’s comment wasn’t rude? Seriously? Susan B is the POS.

    • Robert

      Like Obama?

  • Sandra Moylan

    I will be watching Paula!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ms.KrystalMeth

I don’t care. But..Paula…whomever handle this for you..I hope you fired them. All you had to do…was say NOTHING! The dumb, and I mean the dumb person who brought this case to light, was dismissed by the court. SOOOOO Paula…all you had to do was NOTHING at all. Just lay low. And to the haters out there. U all have used that word..or thought that word…I just don’t care..now…who needs some Meth…Call me at BR-549!

  • D Z Knight

This is good news, only people that pay will have to look at her. Please sign the Kardashians up on this service

  • beth

I never understood what the big deal was. the comments she made were years ago and others have done much worse and faced no repercussions such as miley cyrus or bieber with his idiotic remarks about girls. Go Paula. wish you success. you were one of the more interesting people on the food network- its their loss.

    • Luv

Read every thing Paula has said about certain people.
From jokes about her ‘friend’ being blacker than a chalk board to name
calling. It is so many things…Yes, we all may have said horrible

Network!!! But closet racist will always support her.

      • Schteveo R

        Luv,
        you ALREADY said that!!!!

      • Karen Babinski

I support Paula, you are close minded. Paula isn’t a religious or political leader. You on the other hand are clearly crazy

      • James

Let me guess, you’re a black racist no doubt.

        • Luv

I don’t hide. I dislike MOST white people, NOT all, and not just because they are WHITE. I dislike anyone who thinks they are better than anyone else for ANY reason.

  • Listen up

What I don’t like is that everyone on the food network was her friend, Flay, Emeril, Guy and many more. Were they forced to pretend she don’t exist and take her personal phone number out of their phones and also were they forced to end their personal relationship with her off camera because they couldn’t be seen with her. You all know when Paula was the scape goat nobody was allowed to stand up for her, they had to sit back and watch her die. Lovely Spineless Network catering to the majority only for points and ratings. Nice.

    • Schteveo R

Not in so many words Listen Up. But they know how the MSM works too. Guilt by association, but IF and ONLY IF the offending party is NOT a card carrying Lefty, Lib suck up.

  • Listen up

Show me a human being that says they never used the word nigger and I will point out a liar. Blacks are the worst for using the nigger word.

    • bosoxinny

      Well….actually…., it’s ‘nigga’

      • Schteveo R

So the refuse to use the letter R…doesn’t change the meanin’

        • bosoxinny

          Truth.

  • Susan Brusco

Mom2many you’re right what she said years ago was not alright, but she may have changed her opinion in the years since, as all of us have on many different subjects. I for one have changed my opinion as I grow older and as I meet and learn from people along the way. I do not dislike her because of her past comments, I dislike her put on syrupy southern sweet face. She is just not someone I care to watch or follow because I believe she is a phony. I may be wrong, I have been known to be on occasion but I stand by my opinion. You are free to stand by yours. Differences of opinion is one of the things that make the world interesting. Have a good day and enjoy your many kiddies, they grow up fast.

    • James

You don’t know her so you’re not in a position to say she’s a phony. Don’t try to sweeten your unkind comments with your syrupy words.

      • sid

Jimma: what matters is do you like her food?

        • James

Siddie: no, that is not what matters. What matters is that she has done nothing to warrant such severe consequences.

  • ginadee

Happy for you Paula Deen! I’ll be following you daily! GG

    • sid

Gin: will you be eating her food? Will you eat at her restaurant & buy her book!

  • Luv

‘Some’ say Food Network can’t find anyone to replace Paula. Well, for me, The Pioneer Woman is the real deal – Ree Drummond. She can cook her behind off, sweet as honey and is as real as can be. I just love watching her show. Try it, if you haven’t already.

    • James

Forget it. Yea, watch someone who is living high on the hog with taxpayer subsidies for their big corporate farm. Her recipes certainly qualify her as a little homemaker but in no way a chef.

      • Luv

Not enough BUTTER in her recipes for you? Or do you miss the twang, HEY YA’LL…

  • Babs

The really tragic thing about that whole mess was that the man she called a nig was holding a gun to her head at the time during a robbery. It took months for that to come to light and then was very under reported by our “news” services which are the biggest racists of all. They basically lied to start the drama and kept it going for months. I am not a huge fan of Paula Deen, but she was $crewed, blued and tattooed by the press.

  • Babs

The really sad part of the whole mess is that the man she called a nig was holding a gun to her head at the time during a robbery. Our “news” services never reported that part for months and then basically hid it. I am not a big fan of Paula, but the racist news reporting $crewed, blued and tattooed her out of plain sensationalism. She didn’t deserve what happened to her and I no longer watch the food network.

    • sid

Cooking doesn’t have nothing to do with politics! Do you like her food? She a chef not a politician!

  • BILL

WHO CARE ABOUT PAULA WE HAVE TOO MANY COOKS ALREADY. SORRY, BUT GET A REAL JOB !!!!

    • bobadob

      Learn grammar.

      • sid

        Kiss me Bobalu!

  • Steve Gibson

Liberals raked her over the coals and probably cost her millions. Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin, Woody Allen, Jonah Hill and all the other closet racist liberals get a pass for their racist and homophobic remarks.

    • sid

Steve: cooking doesn’t have anything to do with politics! If you like her food eat it! If you don’t like her food don’t eat it!

      • Steve Gibson

        Sid,
        You missed the entire point.

  • Schteveo R

Good for Paula. She ran afoul of the liberal-word police, for using a word said on Hip-Hop radio stations across the country 10K’s a day.

Why is it OK for African-Americans to use that word, but no one else? Why is it wrong for a southern woman, with white skin to use that word, but ONLY after it’s been laying around for 5 or 7 years?

Why was her employee ONLY outraged over Paula’s use of the word, AFTER she was having trouble with Paula’s brother? Why did it take her years to leave, and file suit, if the job was so ‘toxic’?

    • sid

      Marry Paula then!

  • ShirleyK

Paula’s “fans” did not “turn on her over night”. The Network turned on her and the cowardly sponsors ran for cover. Her “fans” stood with her and were incensed that the Food Network would “crucity” someone for things they said when they were young. Too bad their dirty laundry from their youth can’t be aired, as well. As for me and my family, we are sick to death of all this politically correct crap that destroys perfectly good people for the sake of the political correctness. Paula has done far more good for all of us than she has done harm. She apologized and she has been punished far more than others have been punished for things more heinous. Let it go!

  • sid

Paula is a cook not a Politician! If you like her food eat it! If you don’t like her food don’t eat it! It doesn’t matter if you’re a Dem, Republican, Independent, Communist, NAZE, the Green Party etc.

Freedom of speech only counts when it is freedom to utter unpopular speech. That freedom is dead in this country. The thought control police have taken over.
