Obama “Ni**er” Headline Stuns Nation

By: Mike Tuttle - July 6, 2014

Disclaimer: Ordinarily, whenever a word as offensive to many as this one is used in a story, it gets redacted, replaced. But this story is about the very use of the word in a headline. We beg your indulgence as we report the facts, understanding the sensitivities that many have toward the term.

The WestView News, a paper in New York that calls itself “The Voice of the West Village” has run an article called:

The Nigger in the White House

The article was written by James Lincoln Collier, and it is an anti-racism piece. Collier is an Obama supporter.

Regardless of the intent of the writer and his editor, press everywhere has been calling for Collier’s head on a platter.

It is never okay to use the n-word in a headline. It doesn’t matter if the article is pro or anti-Obama. It is disrespectful to the President Of The United States as a man and disrespectful to the office that he has been elected twice to hold. It was not in any way an appropriate headline. In fact, it is headlines such as this that give the people who hate Obama because of the color of his skin something to point to when they get called out for their bigotry.

The paper’s publisher, George Capsis, defends the headline, saying, “In this article, however, Jim [collier] reminded me that The New York Times avoids using the word, which convinced me that WestView should. He wanted to use the word to shock us into accepting that there are people who believe and use this outrageous word,”

The paper has a distribution of 20,000.

Directly below that story ran another, penned by an African-American columnist, entitled “The Headline Offends Me.”

“The decision to use the headline feels misguided to me,” Alvin Hall writes. “I don’t see how its use benefits anyone, but I do feel all too clearly how it deeply offends me.”

Personally I think we give words too much power. When we decide to run from and/or hide ugly words, or use PC versions then the word (hate) has won. Lenny Bruce famously talked about this. I think the use of the word in this article is entirely appropriate. The RW nutjobs do not refer to our president as the “N-word” in the White House. Hate is ugly and it must be dragged into the light. By using the word in the headline that is precisely what this author was doing. There is such a thing as too PC. I stand with this author’s choice of words 100%.

I have been waiting for someone brave enough to write what many people are thinking … The reason that republicans are losing national election after national election and even in “supposedly” safe places like Virginia is the fact that minorities overwhelmingly feel that the white republicans think that minorities are a bunch of “niggers, spicks, fags, sluts and chinks”. (I am a gay latino.) With the President winning 96% of the black vote, 72% of the Latino and Asian vote, 55% of the women vote, 67% of unmarried women, and 76% of LGBT vote, most democratic voters view the GOP as racists, bigots, sexists and homophobic. The younger generation is very turned off by this: Obama won the under 44 vote by 52% and the under 30 vote by 60%. It doesn’t matter if Hillary Clinton runs or not, the republicans have already lost the 2016 presidential election. You cannot win national elections when almost 1 out of 3 voters will never vote for you because they feel you dislike their race, nationality, sexual orientation, or gender. Of GOP congressman, there is 1 black senator, no black house members, 4 latino congressman and 2 latino senators, and no gay members; it is predominantly all white male party.

Stating that “right wing” conservatives are all white people who dislike any other ethnic background is about as absurd a statement as they can get. It is stereotypical of those who pull the race card simply because there is a difference of opinion without race even being mentioned. Using your rationale would be inferring that people like Ben Carson, Allen West, or even the Black National Republican Association are also “racist” because they are concerned with the path of which Obama is leading this nation. A bad apple is a bad apple! It doesn’t matter that the apple is yellow, red, or green!
