On Friday I interviewed the charming and accomplished Dianna Hampton, winner of YouTube's Beauty Guru Contest that started in January. We discussed how she thinks her new title will help her achieve her long-term goals. She also shared her passions for family, music, and cosmetology.
The make-up maven says she found out about the contest after viewing Kandee Johnson's beauty blog. Hampton is a big fan of Johnson's and considers her to be "one of the nicest most genuine beauty gurus.” She went on to say that she relates to Johnson because she is also a mom and shares the ability to laugh at herself from time to time. Hampton likes to keep up with the trends in beauty and fashion and checks Johnson's site on a regular basis.
She had only been back in Connecticut for a short period of time and was in the middle of shopping for a house so she didn't always have access to a computer. She found out about the contest three days before it ended and motivated herself to send in one video a day.
Her efforts paid off! She received an email that said she was a potential winner and then received a phone call shortly after notifying her that she would become the next beauty guru.
The 29 year-old stay-at-home mom feels blessed to be a part of the L' Oreal legacy because she believes the line empowers women to be and look their best. She started using their cosmetics as a teen and some of her favorite products are the “Voluminous” and “Telescopic” mascaras in carbon black and the 8 hour “Infallible” lip color line.
Hampton is very successful and has proven that she is a strong competitor on multiple occasions. When she was living in Greece last year she applied to become the next "Greek Idol," and made the top 20. While she did not make the final cut she signed contracts to become a back-up person for the show. Back-ups are kept on hand in case something happens to contestants during the show's run.
One of her most notable achievements was when she won the title of Miss Connecticut in 2005 after she impressed judges with her interview for the scholarship project. She went on to compete in Miss America in Las Vegas.
Another great passion of Mrs. Hampton's is singing and playing the piano with her family. She says her best musical performance was when she was covering Brandi Carlisle's "The Story." When she finished the song, her two-year-old son, Alistair, surprised her with a round of applause.
The singer and beauty guru enjoys listing to pop, top 40, country music, and jazz. One of her musical inspirations is Billy Holiday and she says that she enjoys listening to jazz at the end of a long day because it helps her unwind.
She says that her family, especially her husband Doug, has been very supportive of her throughout their nine year relationship.
In the future Dianna hopes to become a creative director and own her own make-up line. One of the main trends that she has noticed is the doe-eyed look that is achieved by applying circle lenses (cosmetic contact lenses). The anime look is being worn by many teens and college students. If you don't have the money for these special contact lenses Hampton says you can make your eyes appear larger by adding white liner to line the water line.
Hampton hopes her victory in the contest and presence on YouTube will lead her to a broader audience.
For now, Hampton is enjoying the ride and is looking forward to her upcoming trip to NYC where she will tour L' Oreal headquarters and get a chance to observe their work environment.
She also won a hair and beauty make-over by L' Oreal professionals that she will enjoy with a friend over the summer.
