90% of “very small businesses (or VSBs) are on social media, according to a new report from Endurance. This is based on nearly 600 such businesses that participated in a survey.

While most are on at least one social network, they tend not to have an established social media strategy, the survey found. 71% said they don’t have a plan, but just publish when they feel like it. A third said they don’t have a defined brand or company profile, and aren’t sure how to “behave” on social media.

“This latest study illustrates there are opportunities for VSBs to better embrace their social media presence by revisiting how, when, and why they interact with their customers in these channels,” said Michael Kesselman, EVP, Innovation and Strategy at Endurance. “Over a third of our respondents admitted that they do not solicit interactive engagement with followers and they do not regularly create and publish news. But, over half of those we surveyed expressed an interest in learning best practices – so it’s not that they don’t want to, they just don’t know how.”

It also found that 25% each want to learn more about Instagram and Twitter, and 24% want to learn more about Google+. 65% want to get more likes or followers, 43% want to share promotional ideas with followers, 42% are interested in writing relevant content, and 35% want to curate relevant content to publish on social media.
