Monopoly has been a staple in board games for decades, and most people who have played have a favorite game piece to represent their player: the Scottie dog, the car, the thimble. But Hasbro says they're looking to update the classic game and want to introduce a new piece to replace one of the old ones...some of which were introduced in the '30s.
"The tokens are one of the most iconic parts of the Monopoly game and we know that people are emotionally tied to their favorite one. When we decided to replace one of the tokens in the game, we knew we had to involve our fans in the process. We can’t wait to see which iconic piece will ‘go to jail’ and which new token the fans will choose to become part of one of the world’s most popular games," Hasbro senior VP Eric Nyman said.
The tokens are near and dear to the hearts of those familiar with the game, which was created in 1935, and many people lay claim to a particular piece as soon as the game is opened, which will undoubtedly leave some fans disappointed when the new piece is introduced.
"There's a love affair with the token that each player has settled on over time. It's very seldom that you see a player not care about what token represents them on the game board," says Philip Orbanes, a Monopoly expert who's written three books on the game.
The choices for the new piece can be found below, and fans have a chance to vote for their favorite old token in order to save it from extinction--as well as a chance to vote for their favorite new piece--until February 5th.
