Michael J. Fox: NBC Is “Crazy” For Giving Him A Show

Michael J. Fox sat down with Ellen DeGeneres recently to talk about his latest project, a show based on his life which will air on NBC. Although Fox has had recurring roles on several shows such as “The Good Wife” and “Boston Legal”, this will mark his first starring role on television since “Spin City” went off the air in 2001.

Fox has spoken publicly about his fear that suffering from Parkinson’s Disease would either make viewers uncomfortable or would become the main focus rather than his acting, but over the years he’s managed the disease extremely well, going on to guest star on several highly successful shows to rave reviews. He told Ellen, however, that NBC is “crazy” for ordering a full season of his new project, calling it a “leap of faith”.

The network is right to have faith in the actor, though, as he has always chosen his roles, no matter how big or small, very carefully. He also manages to bring an admirable quality to all of his characters that makes viewers want to tune in no matter what the project is.

As far as his decision to suddenly take the plunge into a starring role again, Fox says a positive attitude has always been a factor in how he lives his life, and that hasn’t changed.

“I always say live in the moment, enjoy the day, make the most of what you have,” he said. “And I thought, ‘well if I put one day after another where its like that, why not just do what I love to do and work.’”

I feel that it is wonderful that NBC is giving Michael J. Fox the opportunity to showcase his talent. Regardless of his condition, I believe his acting has not been dimished in anyway. Bravo NBC! It is finally time you did something right!

Michael deserves a chance. He is talented inspite of his limitations and has to work a lot harder than others because of the obsticles he faces. Would rather see him on prime time a lot of the others. Thanks NBC for giving him a chance.

Heavy? What do you mean heavy? is there something wrong with the earth’s gravitational pull?

  • John

Go for it Michael! I have always thought a lot of your ability as an actor. And admire the fact that you do not let Parkinson’s stand in your way no matter what it is you want to do.

I would be all for this even if Michael J. Fox were not a very talented actor, which he is. I admire him for his willingness to let people see what Parkinson’s has done to him, and how he is fighting it, both for himself and for others. His foundation is one I support whenever I can, because it helps look for answers for all such diseases, and what an amazing thing if they can find a cure! I can’t wait to see the new show! I’ll be glued to the TV!

I so admire MJF. He has rolled with the punches and publicly shown one can live life joyfully, even with a difficult and sometimes disabling condition.
My mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the early 1970’s, when she was not yet 40 years old. This week, she celebrated her 74th birthday. She as lived more than half of her life with this condition with dignity. Although the disease has now destroyed her body (many of the current treatments were not available when it would have been helpful for her), my father and other family members have helped her.
We are forever grateful to Mr. Fox for helping bring the reality of Parkinson’s disease to the general public and for doing it with such wit and grace. Our entire family always wishes him and his family all the best for “shining the light” on an issue that needed attention.
