You might think that a show about mythical creatures would just be good for a laugh, or maybe for indulging in a fantasy about how awesome it would be if there were weirdly beautiful almost-people living in the ocean. And you’d be right. But you would also be correct in assuming that some people believe everything they see on television, and therefore a show about mermaids has become Animal Planet’s most popular event to date.

“Mermaids: The New Evidence” brought in 3.6 million viewers last Sunday night, which broke all kinds of ratings records for the network. The show, which was a sequel of sorts to “Mermaids: The Body Found”, showed “video footage” of mermaids in the Greenland Sea and suggested that there was a government cover-up of the creatures. While it was done in a documentary style, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association released a statement to clear up the confusion:

“Mermaids – those half-human, half-fish sirens of the sea – are legendary sea creatures chronicled in maritime cultures since time immemorial. But are mermaids real? No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.”

Apparently, people really love fake versions of “reality”…which is fairly evident, considering the success of “found footage” type films and the barrage of “reality” shows on television.

“The phenomenon of Mermaids has truly been a watershed – and a watercooler – moment for Animal Planet,” said Animal Planet president Marjorie Kaplan. “These extraordinary television specials have electrified, challenged and entertained television audiences and online fans alike.”

I believe that God wants us to believe in HIM. He created everything.. He can create a mermaid if he wants to. There are many
different species becoming known as we become more knowledgable and enabled. Can he make a mermaid? Well he mentions a SATYR in Isaiah 13:21 and 34:14 and people are skeptical on that. However, the Bible points that God IS the creator and we do not know ALL that he has created……..so ponder thoughtfully, but believe IN GOD, WHO MAKES all THINGS. GENESIS 1:21

Sorry, Heidi, but your God cannot create a mermaid. He has neither the bio physiological expertise nor the advanced education required to pull off such a beast.

Does He even know how to operate the high tech genetic instrumentation that would be needed?

How would you know if God didnt want to create mermaids. Advanced education ha, You werent even around when the earth was created! No one was.

        • Valera

Exactly. You weren’t there either. So how could you be sure god created it?

  • Terezi

why would you bring god into a conversation and topic that doesn’t include religion what so ever. the documentary mainly focuses on evolution. not god.

    • Gordon Hanning

Because God like Mermaids does not exist.

Okay, leave GOD out of it if you want, but I believe scientist have said that we all come from the sea… a small fish came onto land walking, pushing, crawling, whatever… and eventually evolved enough to become a reptile or mammal…. although I believe mammals came millions of years later.. they still evolved from somewhere…the ocean being the source… while I’m not completely sold on this no one can say with 100% certainty it doesn’t exist. Evolution happens in many forms, just because you haven’t seen it does not mean it does not exist. And who is to say a dolphin, whale or other sea mammal did not evolve into what ever they are seeing now…just look at the skeletons of this sea mammals… some show very well formed phalanges that have been covered over with skin. Do they exist, I don’t know… Do I believe anything is possible. The ocean vast and many things are being discovered…. this could be one of them …. or not.

You would think that shows like this and Finding Bigfoot would reflect negatively on their ratings. Instead they soar.

I like stories like these just like anyone else but mermaids? we all know they do not exist. I can go with UFO’s and Big Foot but if a mermaid existed I would have one in my aquarium and they would sell them at pet stores to little kids. The story idea is fun but come on people, lets keep it real.

i dont understand. you can believe that there is another life form on another planet, yet the idea of an aquatically evolved human life form on the same planet as you is just completly out of the question ?

I bought it and THATS what piss’s me off!! Alot of the footage I was thinkin “Obviosly Fake”, but it was the possibility that got me thinkin..”Eh..Maybe”…Then the interviews with the “TOP” Scientists in their fields added to the appeal and belief.
Today i found out We were duped. This is the reason for me being truly Upset.
Animal Planet..the education channel which I/We watch many shows to be enlightened and educated about the world turned out to be…TELEVISION!!!
As far as I’m concerned I cant trust Anything from them anymore..all your crodile hunters, bigfoot hunters, turtle people, it JUST TELEVISION AFTER ALL!!! I’ve always known it..but there it was.
