Matt Kemp must be one of the nicest professional athletes in existence. Earlier this month, he gave $250,000 to tornado victims in Oklahoma. Over the weekend, he flew a terminally ill fan out to see the Dodgers play on their home turf.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Kemp and his fan, Joshua Jones, 19, have met. During a baseball game three weeks ago, Jones’ father asked if Kemp could come over to say hi to his son. Jones got all that and more. In fact, Kemp gave Jones his jersey, cleats and hat.

Cut back to this past weekend. Kemp flew Jones and his family out to Dodgers Stadium to see him play. He also introduced Jones to Dodgers president Stan Kasten, Angels player Mike Trout and fellow Dodgers player Clayton Kershaw. The team’s official Twitter feed captured a few moments with Jones at the game, including his meeting with Kershaw:

To put icing on the cake, the Dodgers won their game 8-7. It was undoubtedly the perfect ending to a great night for Jones.

I just read the story about Matt Kemp. I don’t follow much baseball but today I was terminated from my job of 12 years because of budget cuts. I was not sure how I was going to make it through the evening without sitting here feeling sorry for myself. Now all I want to do is hug Matt and thank him for brigtening what has been a rotten day. I love to read about the atheletes that make good and remember their fans that love them. Matt you are a class act.

BARB SORRY YOU LOST YOUR JOB BUT THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT GOD IS TAKING YOU IN A NEW AND BETTER DIRECTION. I KNOW IT’S HARD TO SEE GOOD THINGS IN THE MIST OF THE STORM BUT GREAT THINGS ARE HEADED YOUR WAY. SO HANG IN THERE AND GOOD LUCK.

      Barb,
Like BOSTONBOB said, God will open new doors for you soon.
My heart goes out to you. And my Prayers are with you. If you need help, talk with your Priest, Pastor or Rabbi. A good Church is there to help when you are in need.
When I lost my job. My Church helped with food, house, and other payments. I have since medically retired and volunteer at my Church most everyday. Keep the faith.

Now let me see someone out nice him. Yeah , who can do one better. That was totally unselfish and qualifies him as man of the year, even though Bill Gates is trying to innoculate every human on the planet.

While I think this was a nice gesture flying under the radar is WWE champ and modest worldwide superstar John Cena. Who grants more “Make A Wish” wishes to terminally ill children than the NFL, NBA and MLB combined I met him twice while he was granting wishes to children at a large childrens hospital in indiana. What a nice young man he usally spent an entire afternoon with the kids taking those who could outside the hospital one on one with NO reporters! Because he’s from the WWE he doesn’t get the press has the most popular athlete in the world ! Kudo’s to these young men, in a world where athletes won’t give an autograph for free it’s refreshing to see some have their heads on right !!!

        Curtis,
Great comment, but I am sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of athletes that are generous with their time and money. This isn’t a contest, so what Cena does shouldn’t diminish what Kemp did. And, getting publicity is important for people to see what kindness there is out there.

Much much respect and admiration for Matt Kemp. What Matt does is what baseball is supposed to be all about! My hats’ off for Matt keeping a tradition that unfortunately not enough players do anymore. When you think that the world has gone so bad that nobody cares for anyone else anymore, here comes Matt Kemp to prove otherwise. There IS hope left in this world!

I think that it is awesome to see someone who is in a financial position to help someone in need or to make a dream come true for a less fortunate person, it’s a non selfish person wanting to make others happy…ie: Oklahoma victims..they suffered a great loss. A generous man had their backs. There have been others who have stepped up to the plate to help. My hat is off to Matt Kemp..he is a real and caring person.

I’m not a Dodgers fan, but, I have to say, Matt Kemp is a class act and great ball player. Baseball and baseball fans should be proud of this man on and off the field.

Now if he would just stop beating up on my team……

I agree that Matt Kemp is a great human being. HE has shown that caring and being compassionate about others is a gift in itself. He has shown that he has a giving heart……what a great example he is to all of us.
Great knowing that he is not self-absorbed but rather a man of character and a great role model.

In no way is this meant to downplay his extremely kind act; but wouldn’t it be nice for other that make great money to follow suit and do for the less fortunate. I applaud him for his unselfishness and extreme kindness.
