  • Lindsey Vonn has tied a 35-year-old record for most World Cup wins after winning a downhill Sunday.

Sunday’s tie was all the sweeter after Lindsey Vonn’s comeback from two serious knee injuries to match Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record of 62 World Cup wins.

Sunday’s win in Cortina was her third downhill win this season and the eighth of her career.

Lindsey Vonn‘s wins include 32 downhills, 20 super-Gs, three giant slaloms, two slaloms and five combined races.

Lindsey Vonn has had to wait two years to get back on track to break the record. In the 2013 world championships in Schladming, Austria, she crashed and wound up with tears in both her knees. In an attempt to return to the slopes for the Sochi Olympics she re-injured her knee in December, 2013, in Val d’Isere, France, and could not realize her dream to compete in the Olympics that year.

Other wins that are not included in World Cup stats include a gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, as well as gold medals in downhill and the super-G at the 2009 worlds in Val d’Isere.

Moser-Proell won 36 downhills, 16 giant slaloms, three slaloms and seven combined races, however, she never competed in the super-G because it was introduced two years after she retired.

Vonn has a chance to break the record Monday, but if not, she could do it next weekend in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
