NBC’s The Voice is the network’s answer to Fox’s ultra-popular network TV karaoke competition American Idol. Just like American Idol, fans of the show get some input on the outcome, voting on who they want to stay or go in any given week. This can be frustrating for judges on The Voice, who also serve as a coach for a team of contestants.

This week, judge and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine got frustrated with fans’ choices, and was caught saying, “I hate this country” live on TV. The comment came just after Levine realized that either Judith Hill or Sarah Simmons (or both) would be eliminated from the competition. The comment can be heard at around the 1:14 mark in the video below:

As it turns out, both Hill and Simmons – early favorites – were eliminated. Levine had been coaching both of the contestants for weeks. Only one contestant that Levine coached, Amber Carrington, moved on to the top 6.

Levine, through his Twitter account, has indicated that he was merely joking about hating his home country. He posted definitions for the words joke, humorless, lighthearted, and misunderstand:

Adam needs to get out if he can’t handle his no job no nothing stupid audience. Ask any of them what the 3 big stories in the news are. They will tell you, its Boyonce, Bieber and Hangover 3 in Vegas.

    • http://webpromews kathy holloway

Cathy, we would all do well to follow the advice you gave at the end of your post-” GET OVER IT”!

    • Morpheus

I’m sure there were 60 million americans on the first tueday of November 6,2012 around 10 or 11pm who cried out and stated they “hated” this country and a few million more on the other side who didnt.

He didnt go on a rant like Ted Nugent or any other conservative talk show hosts the next day about stupid or hating the country. Its the heat of the moment of a talent show. and like most shows… the ppl who win or in the final rounds are not always….. “THE BEST TALENT”.It becomes a popularity contests..

To actually be able to tell if America really got it right in these shows on who the winner is…. Do a quick rundown of the past winners and where they are in the entertainment business today? THe Kelly Clarksons, Carrie Underwoods, Fantasia’s and Reuben Studdard’s all in some sense had some success in their careers of course Kelly and Carried greater the Reuben or Fantasia…. The others (some I cant even rememberby name)Where Mr. Soul Patrol? Probably out of the history of American Idol there are trully maybe just 3 or 4 who really are the meaning of those two words.

To the post that said send everyone back to where they came from (barb thomas) ummm last time I check Native Americans ran this land…… and then were killed, murdered and lost wars over it. Barb,, chaces are you from france, germany or switerland…. so ship leaves NYC at 1pm. sweetie

Too many damn ppl been watching Fox News…. stop drinking the damn cool-aid. Heck yall cant even make up your mind if you want to be Moderates or conservative republicans.

  • dan moore

Get over it. Sometimes I hate America, too. I fought for the right to do so.

  • mary rech

hates his fans too because he is in america

  • barbara thomas

If you hate this country so bad, then leave and go back to your country. It is too many forieners in the United states now. They are taking over this country.Thats why we are always getting attacked.I would send every one that doesn,t belong here out of the country when the twin towers was bombed.

    • SGT Morgan

      Well Ms Thomas,

I prescribe one of four things,
      A) Use correct grammar, It’s hard to take any statement seriously with poor grammar, punctuation, etc.
      B) Trying to deport everyone that doesn’t belong in the United States would mean literally deporting everybody except for the Native Americans, because after all the first colonists were from, get this, Europe. Not North America!
      C) We are not getting attacked because people come to our country, what are you? A Westboro Baptist Church member?
      D) The United States encourages people to come, case in point-Statue of Liberty.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
      Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free;
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
      Send these, the homeless,
      Tempest-tossed to me
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

It means that America is supposed to be a free society, allowing all walks of life to live here. It’s narrow-minded tarts like you that give America a bad name.

And before you try to tell me I’m not a real American, I serve my country, even spent 9 months in Afghanistan. What have you done for your country?

  • your mother

some people just don’t understand context. America takes shit too literal.

  • SANDRA

I THINK ADAM WAS JUST UPSET BECAUSE HE LOST TO GOOD ARTIST AND I KNOW AMERICA DID’T LIKE THEM AS MUCH AS THE COUNTRY SINGERS BUT GIVE HIM A BREAK FOLKS WILL SAY THINGS THEY ARE NOT EVEN AWARE OF IT AT THE TIME GEEZ IT’S NOT LIKE DID SOMETHING ANYONE ELSE HAS NOT SAID OR MAYBE YOU HAVE SAID WORSE. SO GET OVER IT YOU ALL CARRY STUUF OVER THE LIMIT

  • Chris

I understand what he meant. Reading between the lines, what he really meant was he hted the way the viewers voted. They took TWO of his three singers and kicked them off of the show! Both were and are talented and he is passionate about his team. It was not a wise choice of words, but spoken in the heat of the moment, I think he can be excused.

    • cristina

      AGREED!!!

    • Ma griffin

I don’t tink he should have said that, but people in America are too sensitive these days. We all say things we don’t mean and wish afterward we hadn’t said! “Actions speak louder than word!”

  • cristina

To be perfectly honest, when I realized that the powerhouses on The Voice where going to be eliminated, I kind of felt the same way…

  • Marty Flippin

No accident or joke here. Mr. Levine’s comment was a “Freudian Slip”. Both he and NBC are Leftists ‘free loaders’ on the blessings of freedom.

  • http://yahoo David

I’ll tell you what big boy (or should I say “a sorry excuse for a human being”) I don’t have a lot of money, but I will be more than happy to take out a loan and PAY YOUR EXPENSES TO MOVE OUT OF THIS COUNTRY THAT YOU HATE, as long as you NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS COUNTRY THAT YOU HATE, AND NEVER SPEAK OF THIS COUNTRY EVERY AGAIN. or are you just a woose?

  • http://webpronews Kimmie

    WOW

  • gabby henderson

This really isn’t that big of a deal. I hate america sometimes too and i was born here. The only people who really belong here are the native Americans that were here before any of us were. It’s not like he bombed us get a grip.

  • abootupurass

  • http://webpronews Nancy

How can you say you hate this country , where did you get the money you now have to live high on the hog from? If you don’t like it here leave…..

    • Ravn Vilde

      Nancy! Never come to Denmark!

  • michael

Yes, I’m sure Levine’s comments had a political undertone. Give me a break! He said something that everyone is going to blow out of proportion because that’s what we do now in today’s world. Now all the “America, love it or leave it” whackos are going to come out and preach their ultra patriotism because in today’s America we can’t say one thing without it being misconstrued as being anti-American. Frankly I’m tired of today’s society in where we have to watch what we say because there are idiots out there who are ready to jump on any little thing to push their agenda. Whereas Levine said something that a lot of people are going to take the wrong way it hardly makes him a threat to the country or hardly makes me want to kick him out of the country. Get over yourselves people.

  • tammy taylo

i knew the second i heard that it would be blown sky high, i did a double take at that comment also, BUT, is there anyone of us that hasnt uttered words we wish we could have taken back, I am sure in the heat of the moment, and with these people he has coached, he was just frustrated. geeze people there is alot better things to get worked up over.

  • Cindy Johnson

Good thing this is America so we can say what we want to.

  • http://yahoo Matt

Some of you people are complete morons. I served and fought for this country and when I say I F-ing hate America it is because of the mostly unitelligent people who are so self involved they believe that whatever offends then must offend everybody. These type of people are a plague on society.

    • Don

I wholeheartedly agree with you Matt! I served in the U.S. NAVY, (active duty), for 10 years. Too many people in this country, many with too much power/money/religious & political influence want to try and tell everyone else what they should or should not do, hear, read etc. etc. If something works for them / makes them happy I fine with, but trying to force they’re views/opinions or beliefs on everyone else is wrong! We ALL can’t be right!!!

  • Thomson

How many of reviewers were love their father , mother, brothers and sisters to death and had said ” I hate you at their face.” Now what you going to write.

  • http://webpromews kathy holloway

Adam, I’m going to pray really hard that this situation goes away very quickly! I just wish some people would work as hard on fixing the problems in ” this country” as they do on finding fault. If ANYONE who is unhappy with your remark and has NEVER said something that was misunderstood-let’s hear from them. Oh, and if we do hear from them-they’re lying.

    • Nicolette

I completely agree with you! Feeling pretty bad for Adam right now, people take things way to seriously sometimes. Adam is going to be the one to have to take all this heat right now. If you watch the show, you would know what kind of guy he is.. You have heard Blake tell Adam to kiss his ass before but no one said a word about that. (because the people on this show feel comfortable with their surroundings, they should be able to joke with each other without everyone in the world hating them for it. )

  • Jeff

If you hate it Adam please, please, leave! Take Al Gore, Debbie Wasserman, Reverend Jackson, Michelle Obama, and Nancy Pelosi with you and start your own country someplace.

  • Gary amelong

    This guy worse then Obama

    • Nicolette

      really!??? Get real!

    • Ravn Vilde

Use proper grammar and then speak. I am Danish and speak better english than you.

  • DHOWARD

He said what he said and was just simply “tactless.” He meant “I hate America (meaning the voters of the show)” They refer to them as “America” all the time. Like when Carson Daly says “and America saves……” so it is painfully obvious that when he used the word “America” in a sentence, he was speaking specifically of the Voice voters.

Also he used the word “hate” but we all know he didn’t truly mean that he hated them, only their decision. He used that statement to “deflect” the embarassment of have two of his singers voted of because he didn’t agree that they should go.

For example, when Lebron James beats my team and he has a MVP like performance, I may say “I hate that guy.” But in all honesty, I do not hate it at all, I respect his athleticism and will cheer for him as long as he is not playing against my team. CONTEXT PEOPLE. LEAVE ADAM ALONE

    • Ravn Vilde

I hate America! Im Danish and find you all ignorant.

  • Don

I too am sure he meant the way the people voted, and not that he actually hates this country. Understandingly so. I have been a Bass player/singer & song writer for over 40 years now and have a good ear. I believe the problem lies with too many teenyboppers burning-up they’re cell phones voting for the cutest guy or girl, because in this era they really don’t know what someone with “real” musical talent sounds like! My wife and I both thought that Sarah and Lauren had/has the best over all command of they’re amazing talents and were my wife and I’s favorites to win (Sarah 1st)! Not to take away from the remaining contestant, for they are all very good. But to me it’s just like when they got it wrong a couple of American Idols ago with the one-dimensional Scotty McCreary. Which was when I quit watching American Idol!

  • Robbie

What’s with the outrage? It is apparent that this was uttered in frustration regarding two of the best artists on the show facing elimination. Nobody says anything about all the racist and anti-american comments that are haphazardly thrown around when it comes to news and politics (real news), so why put Adam (clearly American) on the choppong block? Infantile and unnecessary in my opinion. But hey, I may be wrong. LOL

    • Robbie

      Chopping…please don’t castigate me for the typo…lol

  • Jan

    Get him off the show.

I usually enjoy watching it but no more.

What an asshole. How dare he say that about our country

    • Ravn Vilde

You are the Typical American idiot who sucks on the flag and blindly follows a nationalistic farce.

  • http://FACEBOOK Wandaperry

HOW Many times do u catch ur self saying I hate this person or I hate this place u don’t mean it as a matter of being anything but a reacation to the thing happing to u at that moment. Get a day or year a min. Or sec. U haven’t gone and said something stupid and once its out th gate u can’t close it and yell let me do it over. So grow up find something worth bitching about I’m sure of that.

  • Norah

Quite honestly – since Judith Hill was voted off the Voice, I’ve stopped watching the program all together!!!
