Lena Dunham To Explore The World Of Archie Comics
Lena Dunham is a busy lady; between writing for and starring in “Girls” and working on several personal projects, she’s about to host “Saturday Night Live” and announced this week that she’ll also be writing a four-part story for Archie Comics.
The collaboration came about after Dunham spoke about her love for the comic series during a Q&A last year and the creators got wind of it.
“We sent her a box of tons of Archie books,” Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said. “She devoured them all, and maybe a week or two later came back with her pitch. It’s a classic Archie story with a definitely unique, Lena spin.”
The series has made big changes from its origins in the ’40s. Last year, the cover for an issue titled “The Kiss” featured an openly gay character kissing his boyfriend, something which quickly made the rounds on the web and changed the way many viewed classic comics.
“We certainly pride ourselves on being contemporary, but that’s not the reason why we’re showing ‘The Kiss.’ Just like when Kevin first told Jughead he was gay, it was in the natural course of conversation,” said publisher Jon Goldwater. “We are creating this in the same way. It’s just part of the story.”
The comic’s publishers are still looking to bring relevant issues to the forefront of their stories, which may be why they hired Dunham. Well, that and the fact that she’s boiling hot right now.
“She’s the voice of her generation,” Goldwater said. “To have someone like that say, ‘Not only am I a fan, I’d love to write something,’ it just epitomizes all the hard work we’ve put in for the last five years.”
