Joel Osteen: Lakewood Church Robbed of $600,000 in Tithes

Joel Osteen is the pastor of the Lakewood Church in Houston. His sermons inspire people around the globe. There is clearly one–maybe more than one–person who hasn’t felt that inspiration, however, because the mega-church was robbed over the weekend of $600,000 in member’s and visitor’s tithes.

Cash, checks and credit card payments were stolen from the Houston church’s safe over the weekend. The money came from member’s and visitor’s tithes from the March 8th and 9th services. A church employee who retired from the local sheriff’s office made the discovery on Monday morning. The church sent an email to all of its 40,000 members.

“The funds were fully insured, and we are working with our insurance company to restore the stolen funds to the church,” the statement read.

A church spokesman, Donald Iloff, Jr., explained that he couldn’t comment on the theft.

“Lakewood Church is working in conjunction with the Houston Police Department to investigate this matter. We do not want to compromise the investigation by commenting at this time,” he said.

It’s uncertain if the tweet is related, but Joel Osteen posted the following via his Twitter account on Monday, March 10th.

Lakewood Church is a nondenominational Christian church. Located along Houston’s Southwest Freeway, the congregation is the largest in the U.S. Joel Osteen preached his first sermon at the urging of his father, John Osteen, back in 1999. A week later, the senior Osteen died of a sudden heart attack and his son has preached in his church ever since. Under Joel Osteen’s leadership, the Lakewood Church membership grew from 5,000 to 43,000 people. Osteen’s wife, Victoria Osteen, now serves as associate pastor. Neither of the Osteen’s attended or graduated from a divinity school.

It will be interesting to see if Houston Police Department investigators are able to solve the mystery of who broke into and robbed the Lakewood Church. While thieves are no doubt brazen, it takes an especially shameless person or persons to steal from a church.

Your right Mr. Osteen, you can’t make it work out the way you want it. Your not a Pastor of God’s children, your don’t teach his word, all you are is a money grabber., for you speeches.

    • Patrick

I disagree with your opinion. I enjoy listening to his sermons. each week. he his own way of teaching God’s words. it’s not written in stone you have to teach something they same way others do or that most people are used to. as long as the basic message is there that’s what is important. besides I’ve seen other churches pass out the donation box at certain points ……you don’t wish to donate you don’t have to. no one is forceing you to.

      • McCheeseFist

he is pure greed… and you are a fool to listen to a greedy man. Jesus would not approve of his learjets and giant mansion… Do you people even read the bible’s best parts? He easily takes your money to line his silk lined pockets… fools

        • wisdom

What did Jesus say about calling someone a fool? I’m sure you missed that part. Matt 5:22

          • McCheeseFist

yes and Jesus would live in a 10 million mansion?

          • wisdom

You didn’t answer my question and I even told you were to find the answer. What did Jesus say about calling someone a fool?

          • Barbara Richardson

He probably doesn’t own a bible to look it up.

          • Barbara Richardson

Try approx 10 million mansions. Who do you think every galaxy known and unknown belongs to? “For in my Father’s house are Many mansions.” Who is feeding you all this false info of a 10 million dollar mansion and leer jets? I live in Houston and have attended the church since his father was pastor.

          • Susan

            No He would not..

          • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

Yes he would. He is currently constructing mansions right now in heaven so obviously He likes mansions.

          • Rachel

I agree, he does not need to live in a 10 million dollar mansion. How many people could Joel help if he just found a 1 million dollar mansion and donated the rest to his church.

          • lashy_one

So does that mean Mr. T want enter those pearly gates?

        • goodtech

I don’t listen to him anymore… I, for several weeks, watched parts or all of his sermon and at the same time I watched another very familiar Preacher. While Watching the familiar Preacher – I studied and read, but then Joel Osteen would come on tv and I watched it and for many weeks, when the familiar Pastor preached on a subject, Osteen would preach basically on the same subject but not use, if any, maybe 1 or 2 bible references. The familiar Pastor would use Multiple Passages and back things up On The Bible of his choice. Joel Osteen rarely if at all maybe had a bible on his stand but rarely stated any words from the bible. Joel Osteen’s preachings – I am so sorry to say – sound more like stories that are full of things happening but rarely ever a reference to the Bible about how to do things. He tells the General Story about things but doesn’t seem to apply Bible Notes to any of them. Joel Osteen may be teaching people things, but not in the form of Church Worship I have ever been involved with, seen on tv (except Joel Osteen’s) or heard about. To put it briefly “I feel Joel Osteen puts in one word of the Bible to every full church session he preaches. I stopped listening to him because of that. If you don’t want to be led thru the Bible, he’s the one to listen to. He acts like a good man on tv, but I can’t say I would drive across town to listen to him preach unless he really had something to day I needed to hear. (pretty much like the posting I just did… one or two Bible References and the rest stories.)

          • J, Dial

Exactly, goodtech. We need the Word, as inspired by the Holy Spirit. I don’t consider myself righteous by any stretch of the imagination. I’m just struggling along with the rest of us. But I get my counseling from a professional. And my preaching from a child of Christ, who is grounded in the Bible.

          • lance

The only professional is the Holy Spirit.

          • goodtech

If the Word is taught to you the right way, you can figure out what is the right “method” to solve any problem you have (without the use of a separate counselor). The Bible gives out the great wisdom. We just have to “use it in a modern way”.

          • Barbara Richardson

I’m sorry to see so many negative comments. While Joel didn’t attend college for theology, there’s a reason he has the largest church in the U.S. Joel teaches just as he is; simple. If 10 pastor’s taught on the same scriptures you’d get 10 interpretations however similar still different in delivery. Joel starts every service as did his father with bible in hand. Every service i’ve heard was from the bible. Jesus though he spoke in parables at times taught a simple message overall to Love God and have faith in him. To believe in him and who he was, finally to love each other as God loved us. All to often pastors and theologians teachings are complex and technical which results in loss of attention or confusion and doubt as to who is right and who is wrong. This is why the bible tells us to “Study to show ourselves approved of God.Workmen needing not being ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Also it says,”You have need that no man teach you; for the Holy Spirit teaches and brings all things to understanding”. And finally, “Each man is to work out his on plan of salvation with fear and trembling.” Yes God appointed a five fold ministry that included Pastors, Teachers, and Evangelist, but the ultimate responsibility for our souls is ours. If Joel’s simple method of teaching inspires thousands to believe in the simple message Jesus left us with and actually apply it to everyday life; I find no fault. For the church to thrive as it has God must be pleased with something they’re doing. I’ve said this all to say; “Sometimes less is more.”

          • lance

Thanks Barbara, at least there is one person on this wall that gets it.

          • Rob Billeaud

Did he – or you – ever read the parts of the Bible that talk about living a humble life? Did Jesus walk around in the finest robes or travel by chariot? You say that sometimes less is more. Does Joel Osteen with his $10.5 million mansion in River Oaks (and $2.9 million pad in Tanglewood) his private jet and his fancy cars live by that motto?

          • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

Actually yes Jesus wore the finest robes as most rabbis. As for how Jesus traveled, we don’t know. Ask Jesus.

          • Barbara Richardson

As a matter of fact yes I have. Living a humble life is to do with your character, in that scripture. Did you read the scripture where the guards were actually gambling for pieces of the robe he had on when he was taken into custody? In those times a robe, or garment that was made without any seams was very expensive in deed. Rob, Jesus was very wealthy as was his disciples; which would explain the need for a treasurer…Judas Iscariot that betrayed him. Have you ever read the scriptures where God gave instructions on how he wanted the Temple built and the actual materials ( the most expensive woods, gold and other precious metals and jewels?), sorry I meant his Tabernacle which housed the Arc of the covenant. There is also a scripture that says “Above all I would that you would PROSPER and be in GOOD HEALTH as your souls Prosper”. I am personally happy that he and his family are able to live in a nice home. Need you be reminded that his father John Olsteen was wise enough to invest in stock that proved very lucrative. Victoria’s family is also very wealthy and own businesses one of which happens to be high end jewelry store where they happened to meet when he stopped in to purchase a battery for his watch. He doesn’t accept a salary from the Church. As for the jet..LOL! I think you have him confused with another Houston pastor which happens to own or leases a helicopter to attend services @ the 3 church locations he has. One other important fact that is forgotten is there is a Church Board of elected members that account for every penny that comes in and leaves the Church. When people that aren’t in the ministry are affluent it’s alright, but not a Church that helps so many families, charities and even supplies aid to third world countries.

          • jenjen

As the Bible tells us, anyone that teaches that godliness is a means to financial gain is a false teacher! But, the Bible also tells us that in the last days many will store up for themselves teachers that tell them what their itching ears want to hear. There are MANY with itching ears willing to dish out their money to false teachers; hence so many false teachers today. It is no different than paying a fortune teller. It’s sad to me that so many get sucked in to this kind of deceit! I pray that God opens the eyes of those who REALLY seek Truth!

          • Barbara Richardson

jenjen, While there are those teachers that are guilty of just that, we can’t judge or condemn all. The bible also teaches that God’s word would be spread to every corner of the earth before the end of time. In order for this to take place missionaries, TV ministry and even social media has to be utilized. It takes money in order to finance this. Joel doesn’t harp on financial gain. Has it occurred to you that God himself has appointed and anointed this ministry to fulfill his purpose? We have to be very careful of our assumptions least we bring his disapproval upon ourselves. Since i’m assuming you study your bible then you’re aware of his warning; “Touch not my anointed; nor do my prophets ANY HARM”.

          • Charlie

            AWESOME response!

          • lance

There are different levels of teachers just like in grad school. Peter could not teach as well as Paul but both of them were Apostles. Joel is a man of GOD, people just want to legislate those who GOD called but GOD doesn’t use a democracy when he make decision.

        • NEVERTHELESS

He doesn’t take a salary from his church. He does it to silence ignorant people like you. People who charge things they know nothing of should shut up. Besides, it’s none of your business anyway. Kobe Bryant makes $38 million a year. That ain’t none of your or my business either.

      • Alex Bundy

you obviously don’t know the Bible if you like his watered down gospel

      • Rob Billeaud

Uh, yeah, pass the donation box, but seriously 600 grand from TWO services???!!! I went to a fairly large church when I was a kid and if the church took in 6 grand for a week, that was a good week.

      • Da Kaiser Fam

OK well did you know the torah teaches to give 10% of the crop not money. a lot of the disciples didn’t have money. the Roman Catholic church added that from when Jesus Said give on to Cesar what is Cesar’s, and give on to God what is God’s, but what Jesus was realy saying is give god your everything because nothing belongs to you

    • Tony Horan

Rita, are you GOD, are you the Judge over Men. I listen to Joel and other pastors and they all ask for Tithes. Joel never claimed to be a Pastor. Do your homework before you condemn or you will be Damned!

      • Bridgett Brogdon

Tony, you are an idiot. To quote you, “Are you GOD, are you the Judge over Men.” (sic) How dare you damn another person. Judge ye not, lest ye be judged. By the measure ye judge with, so shall ye be judged. Opinions are one thing. Claiming to know God’s will is another.

        • Tony Horan

Bridget are you God, No I do not think so,,, if yo need to quote from the bible please use all the content and not just the bit to appease you… God Bless You

          • Bridgett Brogdon

Once again, your grammar is atrocious. Why is “butt” capitalized? What’s with 3 commas? Where is the question mark after a poorly structured question? You need to quit posting your ignorance for all to see.

        • Tony Horan

Call me from Hell and let me know how it is… You can use Skypen so I can see your Butt burning along with the other fake people. LOL

          • Sunshine

Well, there’s a Christian attitude if I ever saw one! “LOL” referring to people burning in Hell. Thought you guys were supposed to be distraught at the idea of people going to hell.

          • McCheeseFist

oh but he only has jesus’s love in his heart… and hopes you burn in hell…! another great Christian “example”…

        • Diana Arriaga

Am I missing something from Tony’s post? Because I don’t think he said anything to deserve being called an idiot! From what I under understood he was simply disagreeing and telling her she shouldn’t judge. And I’m not religious so I will not quote the bible, but I agree with him.

      • Roger

To Tony : Lakewood Church’s own web site identifies Joel Osteen as the church’s pastor. Perhaps you should do your homework, or stop telling lies, whichever applies to you. (Only you know whether you are deliberately misstating the facts or are simply speaking about things of which you are not knowledgeable.)

To Tony and those replying to him: The name calling, judging, and personal attacks that you are engaging in suggest to me that you all need to engage in some serious self-examination rather than commenting on what the other person says.

I personally am not a fan of Joel Osteen and disagree with his theology. I also know that I am not qualified to judge Joel, Tony, or the other commenters here, and neither are you. (and for those of you who cloak your comments in scripture, you are no more qualified to interpret scripture than the person who disagrees with you.)

      • J, Dial

        Tony,
You are way too angry. Truly, you are, and I am so very sorry. I really mean that, and not in a pitying or “looking down on you” way. Don’t judge so harshly. Rita won’t be “damned” for her opinion, just as you will not. God’s grace would have us not condemn each other, but rather love one another as He has loved us, in all our human failing.

        • Caleb

My thoughts and prayers go out to Lakewood’s congregation.
Boy, the people of this world we live in today are only worried about one thing and one thing only, THEMSELVES and how they can make people’s lives miserable. I mean, reading down through these comments, this person quotes what the Bible says about judging than the next person who certainly doesn’t know anything about the Bible, completely flies of the handle about that person judging. WOW! I mean this is a terrible thing that happened, and yet people are still ready to ridicule the people this happened to. Can’t people show any compassion in this world today?
And for the one who says about the way he shares what God has laid on his heart to bring forth in a sermon. Pastor Osteen preaches this way to keep people from getting distracted from flipping through their Bibles. To many preachers from years past think you have to turn to every scripture in the Bible about what they are preaching on, and then people just get out of focus on the real meaning of why they are there, to receive the part of the sermon that God has them there to hear for some reason to help them out in their walk through life.
And for the one’s who say Pastor Osteen is a greedy man. Think about this Jesus says in the Bible, that people are to give 10% of their gross earnings.(but your thinking 600K from two services how cant he be greedy) Well, back to the 10%, every one in the congregation gives as Jesus asks, and just for example every one in the church makes $500 a week. Only 20,000 of the 43,000 people in the congregation would have to give $50 dollars in orders for the tithes to be $1,000,000. Nobody is holding a gun to your head when the tithe is being collected.
Geesh, God is blessing a man and his church. They must be doing something right, I know if I lived in Houston I would be attending that church for ministry they are sending out into this decaying world.
Praise Be to the Lord Jesus Christ!

          • Roger

Caleb, Citation please. Where in the scripture does Jesus talk about 10% of gross earnings. Once again we are getting into interpretations of scripture as opposed to the actual words of the scriptures. Biblical discussions of tithing address livestock and crops, for example, but I am aware of no mention of gross earnings. BTW, I do give thousands of dollars to my church each year in addition to paying my way on a foreign mission trip. I am not against tithing, but against the way the churches twist the command to tithe to suit their needs.

          • J, Dial

            Caleb,
Thank you for your measured and peaceful words. While I wouldn’t personally attend Lakewood Church, I agree with your main points above. I hope others who read them will take a step back, breathe the breath of the Holy Spirit and realize we are all on this planet together and as Christians must send love and hope into the world – together – whatever church we choose. What I do know about Lakewood is when they were smaller, and they may still do this, they would work with other churches in the area to meet community needs — just like the small, medium and large churches in my area.

      • jenjen

To judge another means to pass a sentence on them, which you have done. We are told in the Bible to judge the deeds of others who call themselves a brother. We do not judge those who are “outside” because they are already condemned. We are also instructed to warn others of false teachers. In my experience, those who use the “do not judge me” card are those who want to keep doing what they are doing, so they shun the truth! The clearest scripture in the Bible that speaks against Joel Osteen (and many others) is I Timothy 6:5. Anyone who believes that godliness is a means to financial gain has been robbed of the truth. Joel is deceived and a deceiver.

    • lance

@ Rita, I am glad you know who is. GOD calls who HE wants to call. HE doesn’t need your approval.

  • http://godsstoryinmylife.blogspot.com/ Amy_E

I’m saddened by the financial loss for Pastor Osteen’s church. I’m glad his ministry had forethought to insure tithes and offerings. I’m sure he is more concerned about the heart of the person (s) who stole the money than of the money itself. He is a Pastor who not only preaches God’s love through Jesus but lives it as a testimony of truth.

    • Sunshine

You’re delusional, Amy. This man is nothing but a charlatan.

      • GOGOINGGONE

Amen to you Sunshine ! Finally, a voice/ sentence in this void of ( fill in the blank) Idiots would be MY choice.,,,heh, heh

      • http://godsstoryinmylife.blogspot.com/ Amy_E

You obviously haven’t met the man.

    • McCheeseFist

He has many more millions in the bank… and his mansion and his Learjet..
I hope he give out free sandwiches every once in a while at least… He robs you idiots every weekend…

      • astonished

he isnt forcing anyone to listen to him nor forcing anyone to give money to his church.

  • what

sounds like this con is double dipping

    • Tony Horan

Wow! How can you judge others without proof of your comment. I can tell by your comment that you are a Moron!

      • Bridgett Brogdon

Tony, I do believe that you have proven yourself to be the moron. Take a class in basic English and grammar.

        • Tony Horan

Yes you are a Moron, Bridgette!! Call me from Hell when you get there. I am sure you will be there with the other fake people like yourselves. LOl

          • Bridgett Brogdon

I assure you, I am very real. You are the fake. Tony you need a nap, and your teddy bear. I would appreciate it if you took the time to spell my name correctly.

  • richard jackson

i am deeply sorry to hear what AS HAPPEN, NOBODY STEAL FROM GOD AND GETS AWAY WITH IT,GOD IS IN CONTROL,

    • Bridgett Brogdon

They stole from a man. God has no need for cold, hard cash.

      • stayfocused

        God owns everything. Even cash.

        • Sunshine

So God is the Great Landlord in the Sky?

        • GOGOINGGONE

TAX HIM, we get taxed Why can’t his peons get taxed??,,,heh, heh

        • Bridgett Brogdon

God doesn’t care about cash. His son, Jesus even said that. Unless God is paying the mortgage on my house, and the taxes on my salary, I assure you his name is not on the deed. His name is on U.S monies. I assure you that man put it there, not God.

      • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

Sure God doesn’t need, but still has chosen to use cold hard cash. So it is God’s money. God doesn’t need you, but will still use you.

  • Chelsey Chesapeake

    He probably stole it himself.

    • Tony Horan

How low can you go! Well by the comment you made you probably can get pretty low.

      • spikepine

Don’t get upset with the comments about this incident; not many people trust pastors, ministers, elders, etc., anymore.

        • Tony Horan

So you telling me that people do not trust Pastors anymore, thats like saying, I do not trust Black people, Asians, mexicans, White people because they all steal and Lie… LOL I do not trust people who have fake names for their Screen ID. LOL

          • stayfocused

            Trust only in Jesus.

          • Sunshine

People use fake names for security from fanatics like you. And we’re LOL at you, not with you.

        • stayfocused

Anymore? The Bible told us all long long ago not to put our trust in princes or the son of man.

      • Sunshine

Tony, can you seriously say that you’re unaware that millions of people are thinking the same thing as Chelsey, including me? Look at all the megachurch pastors who have lied through their cheesy grins. True, most of them lied about sex, but still. Let’s see: Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker, the pervert in Utah whose name I can’t remember. One of my former pastors got caught running around w/the wife of one of the deacons. Power corrupts, and blind people like you have given Osteen power. Y’all worship the man, not the Christian god.

        • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

There are literally thousands of mega churches and the list lof corrupt ones doesn’t even make 1%. God’s people are good.

    • Jesus Galvan

you know what people after hearing this on the news this morning it doesnt surprise me one bit it may have been a conspiracy you may never know maybe an inside job or whatever you could call it im thinking maybe it must have been joel or victoria themselves people get greedy sometimes lets not let the pastors or ministeries fool you just becuase their pastors or ministers that doesnt mean their clean im not trying to judge but i believe it was an inside job or some kind of conspiracy somebody knows somethnig. its a cover up it must have been joel himself or victoria herself or maybe both.

    • atestring

      What an ignorant statement

  • Ginger DesRousseau

    Inside job.

  • Dick Fitz

Ahahahahaha! They have insurance! That proves that God is either impotent or doesn’t exist! And I can’t believe the Houston police are wasting their time on this. A business should have to pay taxes to benefit from government services!

    • LaQueefsta Johnston

      Amen brother!

  • Pauletta Lechman

    I do not agree wit u Rita;I have a couple of his books,and when I listen to him,it inspires me to do good,to become a better person,and a better Christian.He inspires me,and I am sorry if u don’t agree.-Pauletta

  • Joy

Why does a church have 600,000 dollars available for someone to steal…..That is what is wrong with churches now days, Its all about the money not helping others…Churches have become businesses…..

    • god’sservant

$600,000 divided by 43,000 members works out to just under $14 per person. Don’t hate the church because they have a lot of members!

      • Joey Bozzoni

You’re right god’s servant! That’s in ONE DAY! $600K. He should be able to have a charity that gives (from that TAX EXEMPT MONEY) at least between $25 – $50 MILLION per year. Since he makes that in under half a year., EVERY YEAR. What charities does he run that helps anyone other than his parish? Most of the people in his parish don’t need the money THAT desperately if they can give an avg. of $14 per week or day depending how often they go. I know people who struggle to have literally $5 left over in profit PER WEEK. And, they have termninal diseases. Is he helping them indirectly from charities for diseases of any kind? NOT THAT I’VE READ! He’s in it for the money, that’s it. You know how he lives? Does he ‘live humbly, modestly, like JESUS did’? NO! He lives the ultra high life. He may speak words of inspiration (from the Bible) to ‘help you’, while out the other side of his mouth he is saying, MONEY MONEY MONEY!

        • Joey Bozzoni
        • Realist Girl

From what I have read he does not give to any charity…….. shame on him……… he is a greedy pig and I would love to tell his fake grinning ass to his face… he was just a camera man when his father died then he realized I can live the life by spreading fear — smdh ! gag me, Joel Osteen you are pathetic beyond pathetic, I said so — your fake ass concern is so fake it gags me … ~

    • Tony Horan

Joel Olsteen ministries helps millions of people a year with homes, food, medicine. Joy you have the wrong name it should be Sad not Joy

      • Joey Bozzoni

Where are the numbers on that? Proof Tony, people need proof, not the divine word of Tony Horan. Those numbers are public domain. Funny, I can’t find your numbers anywhere.

        • McCheeseFist

exactly… his Learjet was bought with these fools money and his giant estate…

        • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

You don’t need crap. Who are you? Do you donate to him? Are you a partner or member? If not, shut your mouth. He isn’t accountable to you. Your on the outside running your mouth. He is accountable to God, his family, his church, and partners. If he is raising the funds he is the people must support what is being done with the money. And that alone is what matters.

      • Realist Girl

Tony, I would like to see proof of that – he said in an interview once that his $$$ goes to support his own church, staff!

    • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

Jesus ran His ministry the same way. Further it takes money to run a ministry. It takes money to feed the poor. It takes money to shelter the homeless. It takes money to be on tv. It takes money pay staff. I could keep going. Quit being ignorant.

  • p2thep

    Rita, the lovely Pharisee maid.

  • MaryBeth

I DVR Joel Osteen’s sermons every Sunday. I listen to them throughout the week. They are a great inspiration for me and have helped me through many difficult times. I am sorry to hear that someone stole money from his church.

  • Bridgett Brogdon

A fat man can pass through an eye of the needle faster than a wealthy man can enter Heaven. I wonder how much of that $600,000.00 was ear marked for the poor vs. luxury items. It must be nice to hide behind tax exemptions.

    • Tony Horan

Joel Olsteen ministries helps millions of people a year with homes, food, medicine with that money. Shouldn’t judge before you know the facts.

      • Joey Bozzoni

Where are the numbers on that? Proof Tony, people need proof, not the
divine word of Tony Horan. Those numbers are public domain. Funny, I
        can’t find your numbers anywhere.

        • McCheeseFist

exactly this Joey guy certainly shut up pretty quick…

          • Al

I once went to the Lakewood Church to see if the Outreach Ministries would be interested in making a trip up to Barrow Alaska. I left a message and call back number with the head of that group and they never contacted me.

    • Tony Horan

So you telling us A Fat, Poor man will go to Heaven and all of us Skinny Wealthy People will not. LOL, LOL.
Yes you are hoping this is true because by the look and your comments you must be broke and fat. LOL

      • Sunshine

Doesn’t the Bible say that it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into Heaven?

        • Joey Bozzoni

She’s altering the metaphor in her own way as she pleases. Nothing wrong with that, the same point is understood. The point of this,

      • Bridgett Brogdon

You are a moron. That is a new Testament Quote. I won’t need to use Skype (not skypen you dregs of humanity) to talk to you. I’ll just lean over and tap you on the shoulder. It would be nice if you would make an effort to spell my name correctly. Your grammar, or lack of leads me to believe you’re about eight years old. Moron is much too complimentary for you. I hope you at least got your GED. Now on to remedial English and grammar for you. You are a silly little boy.

    • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

You wonder… if you didn’t give it isn’t your business.

  • Steve Phillips

He talked easily manipulated people out of their money, then someone took it from him. Big deal. People will be dumb enough to continue to give him money. Why? You could send 30 disadvantaged high school grads through college for 600k. It looks better in his pocket though. Pretentious, arrogant, asshole osteen. Fuck em.

    • Juan Prado

tithing ,try it before you release such comments. Cause someone else stole doesn’t make the victim a thief, you don’t even have a clue how much of an impact this money truly makes around the world and even in your own backyard. That’s what ignorant people like wont take the time to look into or much less be a part of.

      • Joey Bozzoni

Really Juan? The money in my backyard? Right. How about this,

$600K. He should be able to have a charity that gives (from that TAX EXEMPT MONEY) at least between $25 – $50 MILLION per year. Since he makes that in under half a year., EVERY YEAR. What charities does he run that helps anyone other than his parish? • Tony Horan

What a poor , sad person you are. I am praying for your Soul. God Bless You and Joel Blesses you too.

      • Sunshine

Can’t speak for Joey Bozzoni, but if I were him, I’d rather not be blessed by the likes of Joel Osteen. His church is just a cult of personality.

      • McCheeseFist

we pity you… your easily led by this mans words… his father was a snake and so is he… you are just too blind to see it. go talk to Jim baker and the other slick talking pastors… give your money to some church that needs it, not this rich guy…

      • Steve Phillips

Actually Tony Horan, I am a very happy. And I probably have more $ than you. Please save your breath and dont pray for me..its meaningless..completely meaningless. Makes you feel as though you have “done” something. Joel wont pray for me, Why would he act out a meaningless gesture for me? I don’t give him money. Pray for me, I will think for you.

  • Salome

Joel, your sermons are very practical and like you have said we should not let what anyone takes from us upset us. We should trust God to be in control. Sometimes when we loose something its for our own good, may be God wants to fully experience his grace and mercy and probably the object would have been a hindering block. Keep it up Joel!

  • TheVelociraptorOfLove

$600 grand in two days. Nice work if you can get it.

  • stayfocused

I would like to say something about what I see but I have this darn plank in my eye that needs to be taken care of first.

  • Viator16

Osteen has been robbing God for years. He is a con man.

    • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

How do you know? Shut up

  • Dan Short

    Easy come, easy go!

  • Joey Bozzoni

You’re right god’s servant! That’s in ONE DAY! $600K. He should be
able to have a charity that gives (from that TAX EXEMPT MONEY) at least
between $25 – $50 MILLION per year. Since he makes that in under half a
year., EVERY YEAR. What charities does he run that helps anyone other
than his parish? Most of the people in his parish don’t need the money
THAT desperately if they can give an avg. of $14 per week or day
depending how often they go. I know people who struggle to have
literally $5 left over in profit PER WEEK. And, they have termninal
diseases. Is he helping them indirectly from charities for diseases of
any kind? NOT THAT I’VE READ! He’s in it for the money, that’s it.
You know how he lives? Does he ‘live humbly, modestly, like JESUS did’?
NO! He lives the ultra high life. He may speak words of inspiration
(from the Bible) to ‘help you’, while out the other side of his mouth he
    is saying, MONEY MONEY MONEY!

    http://theoriginalgospel.com/osteens-new-10-5-million-mansion/

Oh, not to mention his ticket sales. Go to ticketmaster here, http://www.ticketmaster.com/am

$27 per ticket, and those aren’t good seats. The best seats are
absolutely outrageous. So, figure that out, almost double the avg tithe
per day, so that’s $1.2M dollars per ‘concert’. Looks like he does 2-3
in one day as well, multiply that by around 2-3 venues PER MONTH. So,
    $1.2M X 3 ea. venue, multiplied by 3 per month. That’s roughly $10.8M
PER MONTH. Oh, he’s not rolling in dough?

    • Nelson L. Payne

His church is an charity to MANY people and places! Funny you don’t complain about other places/business but let a Christian make money and Lord send them to hell!

      • Joey Bozzoni

OTHER PLACES PAY TAXES Nelson! Get it right! HUGE DIFFERENCE!

        • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

You act like taxes are a good thing. Further any employed by the church still pays taxes including the Pastor. Sounds like a type of class warfare. Your mad because someone didn’t pay something you did. Grow up.

          • Joey Bozzoni

I never said taxes were a good thing. Stop putting words in people’s mouths. Everyone should pay taxes, period. Why should they get preferential treatment? Surgeons who literally SAVE people’s LIVES every day don’t get tax free status now do they? You get a life… and learn something other than online porn.

          • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

A minister is the most important job on earth. I am proud to be one. I love how u just slandered me also. And Nelson was right. Quit being jealous.

          • Joey Bozzoni

Jealous? I’m not jealous of lunatics who believe in fairytale men in the clouds like you. Not only that but the job of a person who preaches such lunacy to others is about the lowliest job on Earth. Should be taxed and then taxed again.

          • http://www.minjeremiah.org/ Jeremiah Williams

Your the world minority with your stance about spiritual things. So who may indeed be the loon? The vast majority on earth believ in God. They may disagree on doctrine or who is God, but they know there is a God. We are all wrong and your right. I think you have a serious problem.

  • Robert

Don’t worry Joel. Just like your comments last week that the Bible was outdated and the apostles were a bunch of liars, the same can probably be surmised about that scoundrel Moses and his ten commandments. So along with the practicing homosexuals you claim will be welcomed into heaven, I’m sure God would never really hold anyone to that little blurb about “Thou shalt not steal.” Given that, I’m sure the person or persons who took your money will be dancing on the streets of heaven with you. I’d say they have just as good of a chance to make it as a money hungry false prophet !!!

  • Tammy Ellis

And who are your Rita to say that he is not a “Pastor of God’s children” and he does not teach his word?? You need to read the bible again because you do not have the right to judge his teachings only God can do that….”thou shall not judge” why do so many christians forget that part??? Mr. Osteen’s way of teaching may not be to your liking but the his still speaking God’s word and he inspires others to do the same AMEN

    • GOGOINGGONE

If your god was here, would he ask you for money?? NO.

Wow someone would steal from a church. Money is the root of evil .Who would do this ? we need to pray for them. I lost my job and my son lost his by way of evil people and I have never thought once no matter how hard times get of stealing from someone. These are crazy mixed up times we live in. Just like Joel to say no big deal gods in control ! and he will pray and forgive this awful deed!

    • GOGOINGGONE

IT WASN’T STOLEN ! That frack head hid it and will double the amount with the insurance he had on it. With that much money every Sunday, that con man would not share the key/ combination with just anybody. Forget your fracking religion and look at this with ” eyes wide open “!

  • lashy_one

    Don’t be so harsh in judging others;
be compassionate towards others overlooking their faults. One day the shoe will

  • tony diaz

Give your money to church coz jesus needs money

  • Buddy

Suckers, just tell them what they want to hear. so the weak will give you all their money. Mr. Osteen and his trophy bride are very rich. What happened to the story of his wife trashing the (little people) stewardess? So much historical precedent for these type of people.

    • GOGOINGGONE

If we did that , we’d still be in jail.

  • Rod Morris

All they had to do is pray the money wouldn’t be stolen. Oh, I forgot, it was God’s will.

  • James Bruce

Jesus did not have a place to lay his head the Bible speaks of, so I am guessing money was the farthest thing from the Lord’s mind when He ministered here on earth! It is sad that many prosperity preachers have so much wealth and “things” that there are so many regular Joes and Janes that could use some groceries that work two and three jobs for their family JUST to survive! It is pathetic today of those preachers that ‘think’ they are doing good when in fact they are bringing the gospel of Christ to shame with their greed! In fact ‘greed’ is talked about a lot in the Bible! I am NOT a Joel Osteen fan at all even though I am a born again believer!

    • magnumpi28

Did you read how much 600K for 2 services, this man is a rip off artist. Clothing himself in the bible to teach fear — give your 10% or go to hell! We call this a spiritual Ponzi scheme! — anyone that would give their money to this joke is exactly that a joke! ~ fear, fear, fear.. when will folks wake up and realize that his mansions and jets are just a lifestyle for him and he laughs as people struggle to give their hard earned $$ to him —

    • magnumpi28

Jesus said give 10 percent to him so you need too do it or you will go tyo hell

  • goodtech

I have only one real question here…. WHY? Why was there so much money in the church??? For that kind of money, I would have hired an Armor Car to take the Bulk of that money to the bank I did business with or a holding bank that holds on to the cash on evenings or weekends. I hope they have Proof of the Amount of Money that was taken. Sorry, but I know of a church that was “siphoned” by a Trusted Employee and the church has never really recovered and is slowly dying out.

If nothing else, this discussion is proof of most American’s inability to construct a simple sentence with correct grammar, punctuation and, hence, meaning. Wow!

Stealing 600 grand from this rich greedy prick is like stealing 1 dollars from me. I hope some buys beers and has a great party.

  • In the Name of God

Joel has helped me to move forward in many areas of my life. I do not see greed in what he does at all. His overall message of allowing God to bring positive change into our life is one that most any person can grow from. Allowing light into our lives is a good thing, regardless of the source.

Boo hoo it up you thief Osteen, your followers will give you even more money so you can live in a huge mansion, while they shop at Walmart and the 99cent store. People like Osteen caused me to leave religion.

It’s people that flock to Osteen’s church and others that make me glad I never believed…

      • magnumpi28

You just need a little faith brother

    • magnumpi28

whats wrong with a olsteens mansion? There are mansions in heaven

  • DW

Well, I don’t think it’s ever a good thing for someone to steal $600K, unless it’s from an enemy source planning on bringing harm to Americans. So I’m glad they have insurance and I hope they catch whoever did it.

That being said, Joel Osteen is a heretic whose “ministry” might lead to them to some sort of religion, but it doesn’t consist of Christ’s spilled blood on the cross to cover our sin and wretchedness. Apart from Christ, we are revolting to God. More revolting than you can imagine.

Osteen is nothing more than an ear tickler the Bible warns us of. Great inspirational speaker. And I’m good with that. Call yourself that. Don’t invoke the name of God when you, judging by your sermons, know absolutely nothing about Him.

So I totally understand @chelseychesapeake:disqus. She’s not being mean. She’s being wise in not ruling him out. I don’t think he did it. He seems like a nice guy. But he’s waaaaaay off base with his theology. And everyone in the area, especially with access to the church when doors are locked, is a suspect.

  • Laura Lewis

600000 dollars in donations in two days or two services. Yeah im thinking big churches like this need taxed what do they do with that and how much is siphoned off since so much is in cash.

    • Tim Donovan

These Christian lobbyists – and that’s really what they are – need to be taxed like any other lobbyist. Organzied religion is such a monumental fraud, but we’re still in the cultural dark ages and allow it all to flourish…

  • Laura Lewis

We have a big church here in cincy not that big but all these people go and give tons of money and ive never heard of this church doing anything for anyone except either firing them or having them arrested.. And ive seen tons of missed connections on cl from there people how holy? Its amazing to me if any of these people believe they are giving to a real church. Please again i bet they couldnt list 10 people or things they have done for the community or anyone..except themselves

  • Rosy

I may not agree with your opinions but i do have to respect them because they are just that, your personal opinions. As for myself, i do enjoy Mr. Osteen sermons every Sunday i look forward to watching him. I have learn a lot from his teachings. Life is a gift, and we have a choice to be right or happy !!!!!
    ,

    • Tim Donovan

Well, given your self-described choices of right or happy, it appears you’ve chosen happy over being right…

    • Justice for America

Rosy, I do agree with you. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I enjoy listening to Joel. He is a true man of God, who is simply trying to build up people’s faith about the power of God, as the one and only true God and the only creator. To whom power, life, wealth, justice, mercy, everything and everyone, including the devil for the day of destruction belong.

  • Tim Donovan

Well, da Lord giveth and He taketh away. But there will be plently more deluded Texans forking over their money to Joel via his candy-coated sermons.

    • Missi

I believe his sermons are occasionally uplifting, but so too are they promising us “prosperity” and it seems like he means prosperity in relation to money wealth. I don’t believe God has plans for each and everyone of us to be wealthy in that way. Wealthy in other ways, yes.

  • stonegold

I think it is funny of you christens attacking each other. Also I think it is amazing that he could have $600,000.00 laying around for 2 days of church. why didn’t they make a deposit or have an armored truck to take that to the bank. I know what you are thinking and it is a figure of speech not literally laying around.

  • Debbie

Why do we, as Christians, have to be so negative? Do we think this type of conversation would make a person that does not know Christ, want to know more about him. We need to be careful of our conversation. I have a church that I go to, however I can never get enough of the goodness of God and it is refreshing to hear Joel preach about his love when I’m at home. It says in Romans 2:4, it is the goodness of God that leads to repentance.

  • Justice for America

Rita and all you nay sayers. If you yourselves are very familiar with the scriptures, you will know that Joel is teaching from the Bible. All you need, as a Preacher, is a sentence from the word and explain it to your congregation, using the reality of life to confirm how God works in our daily lives. Christ was called worst. So, I am not surprised, that Joel, because he it trying to build people’s faith in God, would also be attacked.

No matter how big a Church is and how high a Preacher rises, if he/she is not grounded in Christ and God, his/her ministry will eventually fall.
So, lets leave things to God, so we do not sin by attacking an innocent man.
Joel Osteen does not have a private Jet. However, Billy Graham does!
Also, one does not need to attend a Bible College in order to preach and teach the gospel. All one needs is the Holy Spirit and God’s calling. After all, this is what the early had., since there were no Bible Colleges.

Most Pastors who attended Bible College, especially in this Country, eventually fall. Because Theology is the study of God and no one can study God. God picks and chooses whom to reveal Himself to, based on that one’s desire to know Him.
And it is only with the help of the Holy Spirit, if one truly has Him in him/her, can we stay in faith and focus on God. And not allow the madness of this world swallow us up.

  • It-is-what-it-is

It is so funny how people have so much to say about Mr.Osteen wealth, A man who has reach million of people about the word of God. God will bless a man or a woman who is called to do God works here on earth. Yet the worlds Singer,Rapper,Actor etc, who act or speak about lust, sex, killing, etc get so much praise and have so much wealth, yet no one has nothing to say about that.. Just saying.. Mr.Osteen keep doing you because the hater of God will alway come up with something..Bless are those hear the word of God and Keep it..

  • kathy f.

hmmmm…anyone posting negative comments,I have a question: What are you doing to make a difference in peoples lives? Have you led anyone to the Lord lately?Have you encouraged someone that needed encouragement lately?Joel is helping and encouraging thousands of people..more than I could ever do.
Being critical of others is not Gods way. Read the book of James.

  • Rob Billeaud

I’m of two minds about this. On the one hand, I feel for the folks who gave the money expecting it to go to the ministry and it’s never right to steal;but on the other hand I have to smile because Joel Osteen is just another one of these gospel of wealth preachers who is living high on the hog while claiming to preach the word of God. I mean what the heck is going on where he’s keeping more than half a million dollars in a church safe? I mean that’s a heck of a lot of money – and from only two services (I’m in the wrong business let me tell you).

    • Rachael Van Horn

They were robbed over the WEEKEND. Usually tithes are kept until they can go to the bank. Depending on if you have church on Saturday night which many do as well as he has a service I think on Friday night…THAT is why they would have been in the safe there. Furthermore…I realize it is really tempting for many to be happy when someone who is successful falls for any reason…but I wonder about why we Americans tend to do that to people. ..Be happy when they have something bad to happen to them? I just wonder about that?

    • jaime

If you think about it, it’s not that crazy. $600,000 – 2 services – 40,000 members. That is only like $15 per person. Not so crazy when you break it down. If it were on a Saturday and Sunday, you can’t take the money to the bank until Monday.

  • Debs

I am a Muslim and have enjoyed listening to what Joel has to say. These comments highlight, why people are generally put off by religion. Whether correct or not, Joel’s intention is to bring as many people as possible closer to The Lord, and he should be commended for that. Criticism, hatred and ignorance has nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus, all of which have been reflected in these comments.

Why is anyone speaking negatively about Joel Osteen? His church was robbed. He did nothing to deserve all the negative comments. He has written five New York Times Bestselling books. Do you think that maybe that is where his money comes from? Nobody has the right to judge him or anything that he does. Only GOD can do that.

You know what’s really happening with all these negative comments that are cloaked as “God’s truth?” Satan’s snare is growing larger and larger and he’s having a field day turning Christians against each other. “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.” Matt 7:1 I refused to judge Joel Osteen because I do not know him personally nor as the leader of his church. I choose to believe the best about him because that’s what I hope other Christians will believe about me when they don’t know me. Name calling is very childish behavior and does not serve any purpose in God’s Kingdom. For those of you who have engaged in behavior that would embarrass Jesus, I ask you to take a hard look inward and ask yourself which God are you serving? God the Father of truth and love or the god of lies and deceit?

Most likely an inside job possibly involving the very Christians that worship there. It’s ok, they made $600k in a weekend, I bet that number doubles next weekend. I can’t feel bad about that. I mean, his church is literally banking over $25 mill a year. Not feeling bad for him or his church at all.

Here’s a thought, why did Jesus need a treasurer? Judas Iscariot keeper of the bag

Sounds like an inside job…..guess who my first suspect would be? HINT: The one who teaches that “godliness is a means to financial gain.” (I Timothy 6:5) Also, verse 10 says, “Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” Joel Osteen, and many others, are clearly teaching false doctrine. Be like the Bereans, who “examined the Scriptures daily to see if what (the teacher/preacher/etc.) said was true.” (Acts 17:11) Don’t be someone with “itching ears” who stores up teachers that tell you what you want to hear.

As Christians we have an opportunity to use this format for good. People cannot see us like they do Joel on TV, but our words are powerful. Our message will be read by Christians and Non-Christians. I want to take this opportunity to thank God for saving my soul. I was brought up in a Christian home and had a good childhood. When I became a young adult, I bought into Satan’s lies…. enjoy life and live like you want to live and then when you get older you can live for God. I didn’t go wild, but I wasn’t living for Him. Eight years ago, I got back into church, reading my bible and praying to my heavenly Father. My life has never been better. It doesn’t mean I don’t have trials, but I’m never alone. He walks with me in good times and in bad. I have learned to love and to forgive, just like God has forgiven me. When I look over my life without Christ, I left him, but he never left me. When I look at my past, I can see where he was always with me looking out for me. I love Him more than I can adequately express in words! If you don’t know Him, seek him…. he loves you and no matter what you have done bad in your life, ask for forgiveness and he will!!!

I find it saddening that people would find fault with those who are giving their money the church they belong to. Keep in mind people, what does it matter to you that the church is large or small? If you belong to a church, you give your monies to keep the church functioning. People run the church, people including the pastor, priest, decon, bishop (the list goes on) on down to the secretaries, and people who keep the church clean and neat are on payroll. Why do you care weather the church took in 6.00, 6000, 60000, or 600000. Mr. Osteen is sending out a positive message, and those of you think he’s doing something wrong with that (instead of harping on some monetary mess) that’s your opinion, but the only opinion that counts is GODS. everyone else does not matter, and need to fall back. You all be blessed, and find something else to do.

Jesus said everyone that says to him lord, lord will not enter into his kingdom, but he that doeth the will of the Father, in Acts: 16:18 a woman followed Paul for days saying “these men are of God, hear them” but finally Paul perceived she had a devil and cast it out of her. she was speaking truth but she had a devil. God says in the heart of the ten commandments” REMEMBER, the sabbath day to keep it holy, How many are searching the scripture to see what is the true sabbath. At creation He blessed and set apart a certain day and it is up to us to make sure we worship on the day HE said, not tradition. I am a non-denomination follower of Jesus. all who want the truth must search the scripture for himself.

Did anyone notice he “earned” this money in 2 days? Ask your minions to re-tithe and I am sure they will, For they know not what they do, they do as they are told by a fallible man. I love how Atheism is getting bigger by the day. People aren’t afraid as much as they used to be. Stand up all Atheists and don’t be afraid to call people like Joel Osteen what they truly are. Money grubbing hypocrites. Hes got game though, Think God would ask him when goes to heaven “why didn’t you use that money to help more people?” “Did you really need all that stuff Joel?, I mean really?” Might be funnier if there was a God.

Judge not!!! Lest you be judge!!! Who are you to judge this man.. Do you know him? Have you talked with him? Do you have the right to say anything about him even if you did!! Oh right I forgot you think you are God. How dare you? Maybe you should have a little talk with God yourself rather than saying all this crap. I am a Christian and Christian like you make me feel ashamed to be one. How sad is that!!

Joel Osteen’s won’t “condemn those people”, meaning those who view aborting unborn babies. The Bible has many examples that this is WRONG! http://www.priestsforlife.org/brochures/thebible.html

Joel Osteen is being politically correct on his view on killing an unborn child to pocket cash. Anyone that supports this person is indirectly supporting abortion, fyi…

    Larry King interview: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0506/20/lkl.01.html

“KING: How about issues that the church has feelings about? Abortion? Same-sex marriages?
OSTEEN: Yeah. You know what, Larry? I don’t go there. I just …

    KING: You have thoughts, though.

OSTEEN: I have thoughts. I just, you know, I don’t think that a same-sex marriage is the way God intended it to be. I don’t think abortion is the best. I think there are other, you know, a better way to live your life. But I’m not going to condemn those people. I tell them all the time our church is open for everybody.

KING: You don’t call them sinners?

    OSTEEN: I don’t.

KING: Is that a word you don’t use?

OSTEEN: I don’t use it. I never thought about it. But I probably don’t. But most people already know what they’re doing wrong. When I get them to church I want to tell them that you can change. There can be a difference in your life. So I don’t go down the road of condemning.”

I am a “new” pastor, and the most remarkable part of my job is listening to so many “Bible scholars and aides of Gods” instructing me how to do what He has called me to do. If you don’t like a certain preacher, don’t listen. But also, don’t criticize. You just might be completely in error.

    Joel Osteen’s
teaching is simple. Most people can understand his good messages. if he sells his tickets even as a motivational speaker, many people will buy and attend his seminars. It has been proved that his books sell very well. And I have attended several meetings, owners and General Managers of big automotive groups quoted his books. You are invited for free to come to Lakewood Church! What a great deal for you!

Houston is a hard place. You can’t go around preaching hell fire and brimestone all the time. Htown is real and those folks don’t scare. God’s word has many expressions and we should judge him and his ministry. Besides if he is fake, that’s for God to decide not mankind. God is looking for good hearts like King David lined up with faith and obedience. Whether your a 5, 2 or 1 talent individual, the Lord calls us to work the gifts he has given us. Your face is within you. Worry about your sins and hard heart. No one should be saying anything.

I think the thieves got what they really wanted. Division in Christian believers. Using God’s people to turn against each other and participate in verbal assaults with non-believers is right up Satan’s alley. For the love of respect and differing opinions, can we as believers guard our hearts and minds and not let any unwholesome word come out of our lips? Please?
