Grieving Pit Bull Refuses To Leave Dead Mate’s Side

Male dog stays with partner for hours after her death

Grieving Pit Bull Refuses To Leave Dead Mate’s Side

If you are an animal lover, chances are this story is going to make you tear up. If you aren’t an animal lover, it’ll probably still make you tear up. Just a warning.

Last Friday in Phoenix, a female pit bull was struck by a car on the highway and her mate, in a state of grief, stayed by her side for over 14 hours until Animal Control came to pick up the body. After a woman saw the photo of the dogs on Facebook, she rallied for an investigation into why it took so long for anyone to respond to the death. For now, the male is grieving in a pen at Animal Care and Control and it is not clear what will become of him, as even though he was wearing a harness when he was picked up, no one has come forward to claim him. His emotional state is worrisome for the people caring for him, and there are no current plans to put him up for adoption because of it.

“He’s a little withdrawn and he appears to be very sad,” Rodrigo Silva of ACC said. “If he continues to show these signs of withdrawal we will place him in a recovery home that can help him with his grieving.”

Pit bulls are known for their fierce loyalty and often get a bad reputation for being vicious. While attacks by the breed have been widely reported, many pit bull supporters say the stories get blown out of proportion by the media and that it can happen with any breed.

Pitbulls’ jaws do not lock. They simply have very strong muscles. Please stop the perpetration of these myths. Pitbulls are very loyal, peaceful dogs. The responsibility of any breed lies with the animal’s owner.

@Rebecca: The “locking jaw” thing is a myth. Pit bulls have strong jaws but there is no locking mechanism. Pit bulls, left to their own devices, are no more likely to bite than any other breed. They get a bad rap because so many people breed them and raise irresponsibly and train them as guard dogs. Just stay away from the ghetto and you probably have nothing to be afraid of.

You should do some research before you post ignorat comments. There is no such thing as “lock jaw”…check out the link below or do your own research if you do not believe me. I happen to own a pit, which I would guarantee you don’t, and she happens to be the most docile animal on the planet. Not ALL pit bulls are vicious just like not ALL humans are ignorant like you.

      Rebecca,
Dog jaws are dog jaws. Jawbones are connected to the skull. (Just like ours) Pitbull jaws don’t ‘lock’ as opposed to other breeds. Pit’s do have strong jaws, so when they clamp down it would be hard to open them by hand.
I had a pit/lab mix for going on 17 years. She was the sweetest, best dog. Loved everyone and our cats. I miss this dog a year later.

Pit Bulls are as nice as they are raised. I have had one for years, and she is the one that all of the children are drawn to. Any dog can turn on someone. It used to be German Shepards, until they became “Police Dogs”. In the 80′s it was Dobermans.

Bull dogs also have strong jaws for clamping the hides of fighting bulls. They are also resistant to pain. And yet they’re reputed as lovable goofs.

That was through good breeding and proper raising on the part of their owners.

Just because they are strong does not mean they will harm you! It is all about how the dogs are raised. Some one can raise a yorkie to be violent and we see nothing in the news about stuff like that so back off the breed! They are very loyal and caring dogs . Pitbulls jaws do NOT “lock”… they’re just strong dogs. There’s no such thing as a “lock jaw”… That just shows true ignorance. If you don’t know facts, don’t place judgement. ANY breed will bite. I used to groom dogs for a living and never received bites from any pitbulls, german shepards, rottweilers, chows, etc.. I was only bitten by lasa opsos, shih-tzus, chihuahuas, etc. Honestly, these dogs have a horrible reputation because of their owners and their choices to treat them with cruelty.

The only way they can defend themselves is to bite. It’s their nature. When put into a negative situation, they will respond negatively.

I have a pitbull who was used and abused… and she’s the sweetest and most gentle dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling a family member. DO NOT pass judgement on them. We don’t want people placing judgement by the color of our skin… isn’t thinking like this and stereotyping this breed the same thing?

Own one and they’ll change your life forever. I know mine has.

Don’t perpetuate a myth created by other equally ignorant people who know NOTHING about pit bulls and, I suspect, dogs in general.

Pit Bulls get a raw deal. It is the way they are raised. I know of many
pit bulls who are loving and playful. I pray the pit bull in the article will get a loving home and heal his broken heart. All you have to do is show love to any animal and train them to be loving back, you will have no problem unless someone abuses them or teases them. They feel they have to protect them self. Treat them when they do good. Don’t have to beat them or raise them to fight. Enough said.

I volunteer with a no kill group in Austin, TX. APA has the highest no kill rate in the nation-94%. A large majority of the animals are pit mixes or full pit. I have had some of the best experiences with these animals. They can be funny, rolling over on their backs to get a belly rub with the big mouths smiling & a tongue hanging out.
I have seen them go from pulling on walks(and I am not a big person) to perfect walkers, turning & making sure you are still keeping & and not straining.
I hope the shelter where he’s going can help him over his sadness & get him the home he deserves.

    Please, keep us updated!

Tell Michael to keep up the good work! I walk the dogs at South Congress or at 51st Street PetSmart. It breaks my heart when there is a dog, like Leroy, the Great Dane that never learned to play!!!!!! And now, because of Michael, he knows what play means.
Keep up the great work, & keep Austin 94% or higher!!!

PS-Delgado use to come to sites, now in foster. He’s a great little guy, too. Maybe shelter life scared him, but he is a great walker. I have a special place in my heart for him. Maybe he needs some help?

The 2 pits that I am fostering are the most loving and playful dogs in the house. They are not aggressive at all, and that is a miracle since one of them was nearly starved to death by her owners before I got her, and the other was beaten with a bat and stabbed 6 times with a kitchen knife by his owner. Now they are both in an adoption program called Friends For Life…they are lounging in the livingroom right now lazily staring at the treats on the plate and likely contemplating letting out a bark or 2 to get my attention to see if i will bring a treat over so they do not have to give up the comfy spot they are in.

Before you talk about pit bulls let me say one thing. Pit bull breeds are not anymore aggressive than rotweilers, german shepards ETC. Unfortunely these dogs are abused by drug dealers and criminals to make them vicious and mean. I personally have known of people to lock puppys in closets for months them name them scratch. Pick them up by thier throat and throw them against the wall and tell the dog if it doesnt get aggressive they will hang it. That is disgusting to treat anything like that. These so called thugs out here have given these dogs a horrible reputation. The worst part is, they will probably euthanize that poor thing. I might adopt him just because of that!

I would worry more about a small breed dog. They bite without warning. Pits are a beautiful and loving breed. My son has an American Pit inside his house with 4 children one of which is 2 years old little girl(my granddaughter) and has been with the dog since she was born. The dog would protect these children with her life. She would die for these children but is friendly to all who dont want to harm what she thinks is her family. They are the most loyal breed I have ever seen. My heart goes out to this dog.

It really doesn’t matter in this story–the question that occurred to me is..since when did a dog have a ‘mate’? Some wild animals have mates — wolves for example, but dogs?? I think it’s more likely that
the grieving dog is the pup of the female dog.

I grew up as a kid with a female Border Collie and a male Pit Bull. Both of my “babies” were lap dogs and they never hurt me, my friends or any of my family members. Our Pit was a big, strong, lovable and devoted pet who protected my parents and me. Rebecca is giving Pit Bulls a bad name because of her uneducated views and I doubt that she has had any experience with the breed. I raised my Pit from the time he was 6 weeks old. Most domesticated dogs are very even tempered if their owner allows them to be. But you can train any breed of dog to be a menace, killer or biter! I don’t know of any breed of canine that has “jaws that lock” and I’ve had quite a few dogs throughout my life.

The first dog I ever had on my own was a lab/pit mix, Bear was his name. I went to the animal shelter to adopt a puppy, and found bear, who was 1 or 2 at the time. When he got older(15 or 16), we adopted a 7 week old full American Pit, Harley, who’s mother stopped feeding her pups at 5 weeks. Bear was what I call a great “daddy” dog, to both Harley and my daughter, turning them away from doing something they weren’t supposed to…like Harley teething on my end tables, or my daughter getting too close to an outlet. When I had to put bear down a year after we got Harley, because he lost the use of his back legs, Harley slept on Bear’s bed and wouldn’t eat for 3 days and would only get a small drink of water, which I had to place next to the bed, and go outside 2 times a day. They are absolutely WONDERFUL dogs and extremely loyal to their loved ones. It doesn’t surprise me one bit that this one mourned the loss of his loved one. I just really hope that they either find his owners (if they’re nice people) or find him a great home and a family that will give him as much love as they can! I always tell people, not EVERYONE should own a pit as they are bull headed in the early years, BUT no one should judge a breed that they know nothing about because they only see a few bad stories in the media.

I have to wonderful dogs of my own neither of which are pitty’s, I love the breed. BUT with that being said I don’t think I would ever have one of my own because off all the stigma that goes with them and the added responsibility with a pitty. I also don’t want to see them all destroyed. Maybe one day I will change my mind on having one of my own. Its just not a breed for me at this time. Hugs to all the caring poeple out there who love there pitty’s and maybe hopefully one day people will be educated enough to euthinize the owner not the dogs.

You know even pits have feelings. They are miss judged because of the way some of them are raised. You raise an animal with respect that animal will respect you and anyone that you know. I grew up with a pitt and she was the most wonderful dog.
You raise an animal to be brutal then they will be. You raise them to fight and kill that’s exactly what they will do. You look at any animal weather it be a pit , doberman, german shepard, any animal treat them good and they will treat you good. This proves that animals have feelings and can show love.

I was raised with a pitt and she was the most wonderful dog yes people looked at her like she was going to eat them. The only thing she did was look up snif and go about her own way. We had her until she turned 17 and in those17 years she never once attact a person or another animal. You miss trea the animal your going to get mistreatd back. If you mistreat them, they wind up as the dogs you most hear about. Come to my house and my dogs will lick you, wag their tails, and are great family pets. And no, pit bulls jaws do not lock any more than any other dog. I have been bit though…by a rat terrier and a german shepard!

most of my dogs have been german sheperd and pit bull. a german sheperd is more likely to bite than any other dog statistically. it is a myth about locking jaws on pit bulls; people think that only because their mouth is bigger and wider than most dogs. my pit bulls were the most loving dogs i have ever owned. as much as i love sheperds, have to say; pit bulls by far are more intelligent and very loyal and intelligent. my pit bull actually put out a house fire and always warned me when i was in danger. so sad false rumors have made the breed hated by many. you will never find a more loving loyal dog than a pit bull that is trained properly. any breed or size of do can be viscous if they have an owner that is a viscous person. when my mom died her little s***zu was an awful dog and viscous. i retrained the dog to be loving. any animal that doesn’t act right has a messed up owner. also sometimes dogs are protecting themselves and get blamed and in trouble because they were protecting themselves from being abused by a really messed up human.

Only one person, the first commentor Rebecca, made a negative comment, and the rest have responded to that. We all feel sad for this dog but as responsible, caring people we are moved to educate people with negative ideas in order to help them try to overcome their fears and/or misgivings about this breed because of all of the bad media reports. Animal lovers…ESPECIALLY pit lovers…are very passionate about the breed and try to do anything in their power to give these dogs their due! And besides that, the comment section is a place for people to express their opinions and true feelings. If you do not like what has been said, then don’t read the comments section on any article because you will always find people have opinions on ALL aspects of it, not just the main part.

To the person who said dogs don’t/can’t have a mate: if you raise two dogs together (male/female) they will become mates, even in nature wild dogs (like cyotes and wolves) will and do have mates they protect and go into a kind of mourning for.

Rebecca, if you are scared, just go to your mama; she’s calling you.

We’ve had 4 pitbulls at 1 time–the dad, mom & 2 kids. We had to be very responsible & a couple times they got into a fight (like 4 siblings might in any situation). They were raised with lots of love & attention & after they figured out the pecking order–there were never any more scuffles. They are by far the BEST breed I’ve ever had–& in 65 yrs, I’ve had many dog breeds. Sadly, we now only have the 2 ‘kids’ who are 10 now, but all my grandkids learned how to ‘respect’ the dogs’ territory, & were around them without any issues. All children should be taught to never put their face into a dogs’ face etc. If there are incidences, it’s usually the person’s fault. The pitbull in the 1950′s was the Marines’ poster dog–they are considered the ‘nanny dog’ in England. There are prejudices in the animal world, just as in the human world–unfortunately–there are too many wrong, negative feelings about this breed that are totally false. Read up on the atrocities that so many of these dogs are put through–& the interbreeding that careless owners allow….. If you get love–you learn love”. “If you get hate–you learn hate”…. So it is also in the animal kingdom. There are mean dogs out there, of all breeds & you should always be aware of loose dogs, that are scared. Just, please, don’t perpetuate the demonizing of this breed. Noone should own a pitbull unless they read up on the breed & understand how to train/socialize them–& learn the pedigree before getting one–you don’t want one that is interbreed–as they sometimes are prone to be alittle ‘high spun’. I LOVE PITBULLS

My daughter owns a beautiful Blue Pit and I was so afraid for her and others including myself because of the bad wrap these dogs have..I am happy to say her pit is my best friend and so sweet. If you train them and love them they will not go astray the same way you raise your child you have to put the same energy in to raise you pit..They must have plenty of love and attention if you can’t give it leave them where they are.
