Google PageRank Gets an Update, +1 Button Goes Worldwide

By: Chris Crum - June 27, 2011

If you’re still obsessing with Google PageRank score, as seen in the Google Toolbar, then you may be interested to know that it’s been updated. If not, you’re not alone. Disregard.

Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable is pointing to some forum threads indicating that Google has released an update to PageRank in the Google Toolbar. Indeed, there are a bunch of webmasters on the Digital Point and WebmasterWorld forums claiming their PageRank has changed. It was last updated in January.

PageRank is one of many signals (over 200, according to Google) that the search engine uses to determine rankings. The algorithm gets tweaked on a daily basis, and Google has put more emphasis on more personalized factors in recent times – things like location and social, not to mention alleged content quality.

Google has basically said that people worry about PageRank way too much. They even ditched it in Webmaster Tools n 2009. “We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true,” said Google’s Susan Moskwa at the time.. “We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it.”

Though for some reason, they kept it around in the Google Toolbar. Some users just like to see it.

Something that might be a little more relevant to to 2011 is that Google announced today that the +1 button is rolling out globally. On the Webmaster Central Blog, product manager Kari Wilson writes:

Today, +1’s will start appearing on Google search pages globally. We’ll be starting off with sites like,, and, then expanding quickly to most other Google search sites soon after.

We’ve partnered with a few more sites where you’ll see +1 buttons over the coming days.

Partners include The Telegraph,, The Independent, and several others, though I’m willing to bet you’ll see them just about everywhere pretty soon.

It’s still largely unknown just how much these things are really getting clicked by users, but the buttons really offer nothing but benefits to publishers, as they provide a way for users to tell Google to rank this content higher.

Google seems to have lost focus seems to be going the Yahoo way, every search engine who tried to become an all in one portal has failed….

  • mountain view carpet care

was wondering when the pr update was going to take effect. all of my sites short of 2 went positive 1 and one site even went from a pr0 to a pr3

  • Jeno SEO

I was surprised that my 2 month old blog has been changed its page rank from being unranked to PR 0 :)

  • ATUL

nothing changed for me.. same 2 .. dont know when it would be good for me

  • neil

My websites got PR upgrades from 0 to 3, except for my blog.

Anyhow, PR is nothing but a bragging right and barely translates to profit. That’s my observation, so far.

i saw the google page rank updates, even the blog post has a page rank, it seems amazing, but is there a new update in the page ranking system?

  • Porky D

Mine’s gone from zero to three in the last 24 hrs, for whatever that is worth.

  • ClearSense

yeah, an educational ad spam comment is really relevant….

We went from 5 to 6 in PR, a lot of new sites we built also jumped quite high in PR, rankings did not so PR is not a big factor for ranking.

    Thanks for sharing!
Just noticing our page rank has increased from 3 to 5.

  • Sailor

To my surprise I am from no rank to 4 in google.

As usual – there’s up and down but as you say, I think that the update is fair this time and it gives me impression of how my blogs are going on. And yeah.. I need to improve some blogs while maintaining others.

Good luck everyone and congratulations for those with increasing pagerank!

  • Sanjay Singhania

I did notice that. I was excited because the one I put my heart into that isn’t a year old yet is now a 3 and another one went up to a 2. Looking at my 3 sites I think their page ranks are very accurate. Looks like whatever Google looked at, it is as it should be…finally. :)

  • Carolin

Yes the Pagerank update is out and up – thanks for the notice! From zero to four for our site – went online just after the January pagerank update.

How important is the +1 button in the meatime, is anything known for sure?

What if i don’t use google for socializing…how can i get recommendations from my friends through google if i don’t tell google who are my friends.
They are very optimistic that everyone will use all of their services.

  • Adsense Publisher

People are still high on the PR metric because it’s one that can be seen that Google admits they still use. People still don’t know how PR is calculated and if they knew they might start to ween themselves off the PR nipple they’ve been sucking on for so long. There are other signals that are much more relevant to their page relevancy than PR.

yes, google pagerank updated yesterday but my website still has 0 pagerank for last 6 months while my website getting 1-3k unique visitors daily… what’s going on?

many of my other websites got PR2 from 1 and PR0 from 1 … but my main website still has 0 pagerank while i was expecting the PR2 or 3 for it.

    • Karthikeyan

      Hi pummy manku,

Google still calculated only the website who have the backlinks with high PR that surely get the page rank. Creating Dofollow links with Google authorized page is more important for getting PR

  • Alex

Yes, i use this button too. But my pagerank is still 0 (!

  • Beth
