On September 5, 1946, Freddie Mercury, the British singer, songwriter, musician and lead singer of Queen was born.

Being that today is September 5, many fans have taken to Twitter to send birthday wishes to the late Mercury and remember the musical icon.

Sadly, Mercury died of bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS on November 24, 1991.

In 1992, an AIDS charity,The Mercury Phoenix Trust, was founded in Mercury’s name by the members of Queen and manager Jim Beach. The work of the Trust is to continue to educate and raise awareness of HIV/AIDS all over the world. Since it’s creation, the Trust has raised and given away over 15 million dollars to HIV/AIDS charities across the globe.

This year, British actor and comedian, Matt Lucas, made a video for the Trust, relaying his love for Mercury and Queen, and the need for the continued fight of HIV/AIDS.

One way people can help raise money for the Trust is to participate in Freddie For A Day, an initiative to raise money for the fight against AIDS all over the world. Freddie For A Day began in 2010 after the web editor of The Mercury Phoenix Trust raised money when she spent the whole working day dressed as Freddie Mercury. Those at the Trust loved the idea so much, they decided to make it a worldwide, annual event taking place on September 5, Mercury’s birthday. (They do say you can celebrate whatever day you choose though.)

There are five ways to celebrate the life of Mercury on Freddie For A Day on September 5: you can simply donate money to the Trust, buy or make a Freddie mustache to wear all day, dress as Freddie and get sponsored to go about your daily activities, buy a box of mustaches and hand them out in exchange for a donation, and/or “channel the immortal spirit” of Mercury and do something to raise money for the Trust.

Angry Birds and Queen have teamed up again for Freddie For A Day. This year they have created a tournament on Angry Birds Friends. The tournament is Freddie Mercury themed, making references to many of the musicians famous songs. It can be played on Facebook or a mobile device from September 2 – 8.

Hard Rock Cafe’s all over Europe and beyond have also teamed up with the Trust, throwing Freddie For A Day parties. All parties will include, “Freddie cocktails, raffles, tribute bands, special menus, staff dressed as Freddie and special photo boards in the restaurants…and all of this soundtracked by, you guessed it, Queen.”

Another event taking place today that will celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury and help raise money for the Trust is the Queen AIDS Benefit in London, England. The gala will feature Roger Daltry from The Who, Melanie C of the Spice Girls, singer Alfie Boe, and many more.
