  • A fire that occurred Monday at a Chinese poultry plant has resulted in the death of at least 119 people.

According to a CNTV report, the fire trapped employees inside a slaughterhouse in the city of Dehui, located in China‘s northeast Jilin Province. 119 deaths have been confirmed with at least fifty more people injured. One witness stated that more than 500 people were working in the plant at the time.

A stampede of people clamoring to exit is reported to have caused some of the injuries. Locked exterior doors were also mentioned as a cause of some of the deaths. Survivors are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital.

The cause of the fire is currently being attributed to early morning explosions that came as a result of an ammonia gas leak. Rescue workers reportedly found their job hampered by the slaughterhouse’s “complicated interior structure” and narrow exits.

The deputy director of the Changchun Municipal Emergency Office told CCTV that the cause of the incident will be fully investigated.

The plant is owned by the Jilin Baoyuanfeng Poultry Company, which employs around 1,200 people.
