Fattest State in America Revealed by the CDC
[ Life]

It’s common knowledge that Americans are getting fatter, but the statistics paint a bleak picture of just how large we are, as well as how disparate different regions of the U.S. are in terms of the size of their people.

This week the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention released its latest map showing adult obesity rates in individual states. According to the CDC’s annual Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) report, Mississippi is America’s most obese state for the sixth year in a row. The report shows that over one-third of Mississippians, 34.9%, are obese. Louisiana comes closest to Mississippi with 33.4% of its citizens classified as obese, and West Virginia rounds out the top three with a 32.4% obesity rate.

On the other side of the spectrum, Colorado is the least obese (though not exactly trim) state with only one-fifth, 20.7%, of its population being obese. Hawaii (21.8%) and Massachusetts (22.7%) round out the top three least-obese states.

The Southern states topping the most obese list and the western states topping the least obese list are no anomalies. The South had the highest precentage of adult obesity with 29.5%, while Western states had fewer obese people, with a 24.3% rate. The Midwestern states do rival the south’s size, though, with a 29% obesity rate. In fact, around a dozen Southern and Midwestern states are heavily tipping these rates higher with extremely high obesity rates. According to the CDC, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia all have obesity rates above 30%. The Northeastern states are closer to Western states, with a 25.3% obesity rate.

A full list of states and the prevalence of obesity for the people who live in them can be found on the CDC website.

When considering what these statistics say about the size of Americans, remember that these averages only include Americans who are obese. It does not include the number of Americans who are simply overweight. The CDC considers an adult who has a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 to be obese. Adults with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are considered overweight.

Although i grew up in NYC, i’ve been living in Texas for the past 13 years or so. In those 13 years i have only met one family that is actually from the “south”. The vast majority of people i’ve met in the dallas area didn’t grow up here.
The issue is not “fried southern food” because like is said–the truth of the matter, many people that live in the Dallas area came from other places–such as the northeast or the west–where frying everything wasn’t the norm. In our family-we bake, broil or boil-we don’t fry.

The biggest issue here are four things–

    1. The prevalence of fast food restaurants, moreso, than i’ve seen in other places.

    2. The fact that we drive EVERYWHERE. In Nyc-i had to walk to trains or buses. Here the way suburbs are built, it’s a drive to just get some juice down a few very long blocks.

    3. The fact is that more and more adults, in particular young adults are glued to the internet and gaming and thus don’t come out of their caves to see the light of day. Especially when it gets really hot-about 4 months out of the year.
or when it gets really cold-two months out of the year.

    4. The fact that we are working longer and longer hours. In my last job i was working upwards of 70+ hours a week. No time to work out when you have those hours. With my new job i’ll finally be able to get into a work out routine again, mostly because i work less hours now.

BMI…is crap. Its a height-weight ratio. I a, 5’9″ tall and 215 pounds, which makes my BMI 31.7, but I am certainly NOT obese.

    • Jack

      You are more than overweight.

    • Greg

You may not think so, but you are 60 lbs overweight. You .fat a##

  • L

Diet and exercise (and sedentary work and lifestyle) are the main issues. But a complicating factor can also be underlying health issues such as untreated thyroid – and fluoride in the water can affect that.
lack of access to decent health care can delay dealing with these types of issues.

  • joy

its the dixie states are obese because the blacks and some whites like them fried cook out meats and pork.

I’m currently in Texas but I’m from Illinois. Here in Texas, it’s like this: Thin equals too skinny. Fat equals just right. Obese equals commonly chunky. Morbidly obese equals fat. Exercise is for kids. When I go outside and ride bikes or throw a football with my kids; I get weird looks. It’s just more socially acceptable to be fat here than skinny. They don’t realize they’re overweight because it’s all around them. They fight the bmi table like it’s a debatable opinion even though it’s a proven, factual, health table, unless you have a high amount of muscle. I still like it here though. I just do it my way and they do it theirs. I’m not the one getting winded going up a few stairs at work.

    • Jack

      Go home.

      • http://www.webpronenews.com DAR

How fat are you Jack ? My taxes go up and pay is down to pay for the health care of fat people. Drop the doughnut , Jack !

    • L

Good for you Jennifer. Keep it up. You’re right, people get conditioned toward certain lifestyles when it is all around them. It’s so true.
      @Jack: Go home.

      • L

        @ Jack:
Sorry, I re-read her comment and realized that you were, in fact, suggesting she go back to Illinois, rather than making a nasty comment to her. Apologies. =) And… I agree…. Jennifer, go home!

    • mes

Who is “they”? I live in Texas and I certainly feel nothing less than an extreme pressure to be thin. This is a sweeping generalization.

  • Joe

I would like to know what the welfare percentage is for these states!

I’m in Minnesota, I’m afraid that Mississippi will buckle from all that weight and catapult us into Argentina. Have any studies been done on the likelihood of this?

    • Greg

      That would be nice!

    • mississippi girl

considering the CDC report is based on people actually going to a doctor’s visit, im quite sure other states statistics could be higher.

  • Michael

I’m not surprised that Louisiana is up there at # 2. Just look at our Shreveport Mayor! He’s gotta tip the scales at 500lbs. What an example for the community.

Colorado is over 20 % obese. Wow, 1 person in 5 is obese in the least fat state. Overweight = fat Obese = very fat

    • L

The Boulder Daily Camera reports that in 2011, the obesity rate in Boulder was 12.1 percent, Fort Collins was 14 percent, CO Springs 17 percent. The national average is 26 percent. Boulder is a highly active and healthy community, right by the mountains. Other areas may be more overweight the further one gets from the mountains. There is a benefit to being able to hike for an hour and a half up an incline before heading out to work, and having ready access to healthy, organic food everywhere you look. According to BoulderCOlorado.gov, Boulder has “over 300 miles of bike lanes, routes, designated shoulders and paths.” Even the buses have bike racks on them to accommodate cyclists. However, they will be getting a Dunkin Donuts soon…If only the rest of the country would follow Boulder’s lead.

  • Kevin

Tip for Southerners. You don’t have to eat everything you kill.

    • rj

I think it fine if the southerners eat everything they kill; they just don’t have to deep fry it and eat it with a side of hush puppies after they just ate a big bowl of bicuits and gravy for breakfast…

      • R

You just don’t have to deep fry everything you kill.

      • http://SECLogoSucks Frdedy

You are nothing more than a pathetic loser.

    • michael

Sweet tea. Why do all the southerners drink that mess? I am guessing those same states have high diabetes. Healthier food tastes better. But you people have to eat bacon with everything and lots of deep fried food.

      • Greg

In this day of political correctness why is it only ok to make fun of Christians and Southerners and no one else?

      • mckenzie

wow you pompous ass…these stats have VERY LITTLE to do with sweet tea or bacon that those you so courteously (i mean pejoratively) termed “you people” ingest. It is a poverty correlation. These habits are linked to policy that has been created by the national government, which last time I checked was “we the people” so perhaps you should take a look at the treatment of nutrition on the federal level in every state, including whichever superior one you hail from.

        • judy meserve

You are correct McKenzie its all about education and poverty does not set itself up for a positive exercise program, mentality it is depressing and does not motivate us to do the right thing it is eat because you don’t know where the next meal is coming from not for nutrition and health. I get the frustration I havent been to a doctor since I had kids 21 yrs ago and my health care is out of control expensive I should get a good driver discount like car insurance !!!!! I am a Physical Education teacher and will keep trying as will you you have a good heart!!!

  • h

  • ron

Most interesting of all is Mississippi is also the country’s poorest state. In fact, with one exception, (Montana,) the poorest states are also the fattest. Poor people used to die of starvation in America, but now they’re dying of complications brought on by obesity. (Food that’s bad for you, i.e. processed food, fast food,) is much cheaper than healthy food.

  • Devon Hollingsworth

I live in Mississippi, born and lived here all my life. Mississippi doesn’t have a huge population of people and we have a lot of fast food resturants per capita . I may be the exception to the rule? I eat everything I kill, venison , fish and chicken.. I eat over a kilo of meat a day and around 12- 14 whole eggs. I love veggies and eat nearly equal amounts of fresh vegatables. I am 34 years old 5’5” 165lbs @5% bodyfat. I spend around 1hr a day in my gym and swim daily likewise. I avoid fast food like the plague and stay away from too many carbs.. Mississipians eat too many carbs and do deep fry too much with lack of exercise. I guess its the laid back southern mentality and eating is a pastime of my state.

    • Mike Roeber

To say you are at 5% body Fat is ridiculous you are 5’5 and 165. Did you know that your ideal body weight range is from 134-160, so technically you are overweight. I went from being 285 pounds all the way down to 170 pounds over an 8 month period by exercising and I was under my ideal weight by more than 20 pounds. My BMI was still at 19% which is normal range. I’m 6’1,170 lbs. and I know that I am in better shape then you so lets stick to the facts and quit trying to bullshit anyone, unless you are a professional athlete I highly doubt your body fat is at 5%.

      • RR Worker

So what’s your point? Body builders weigh more than their “ideal” weight and are a solid chunk of muscle. That proves that one set of numbers for the whole population is bogus science.

        • Georgia

Thats because muscle weighs more than fat you dummy.

          • tiredofracistpigs

Actually, muscle takes up less room than fat because it’s denser. A pound is a pound whether it’s a pound of fat or a pound of muscle.

California’s population is 38,000,000. The obesity rate is 24% = 9.1 million obese.
Mississippi’s population is 3,000,000. The obesity rate is 34%= 1.02 million obese.

Colorado, with the lowest % of obese people, still has more than Mississippi.
So you see. You HATERS have plenty of fat ones yourselves!

      • Hulk

You’re argument is null and void because you’re not thinking proportionately. So by your logic, this article: http://www.statemaster.com/graph/edu_bac_deg_or_hig_by_per-bachelor-s-degree-higher-percentage means what exactly?

  • Greg

California’s population is 38,000,000. The obesity rate is 24% = 9.1 million obese.
Mississippi’s population is 3,000,000. The obesity rate is 34%= 1.02 million obese.

    • Kyle

Hey dumba**, they also have about 14 times more skinny/non obese people if you want to play the numbers game. Tables turn quickly don’t they, and thank goodness Mississippi doesn’t have a larger population otherwise there would be that many more obese people in America.

      • Greg

Kyle really don’t start about California…..if you want to talk about which is a better state its Mississippi hands down. The number of colon bandits are way higher in California and I don’t want to pay for health care for Californians to go to the emergency room to get lightbulbs etc. out of their anus.

    • http://SECLogoSucks Frdedy

      Stay in Russia loser..

      • Greg

LMAO Frdedy!!!! Spot on my friend….now that was funny:)

    • No Actually

Butter, cream, and fat do not actually make you fat. Things like carbs, sugars, and high fructose corn syrup do.

      • Troof

Carbs do not make you fat. Fat is more likely to make you fat then carbs. Carbs are your bodies primary source of long-term fuel, the type used in aerobic activity. The problem that leads people to think of carbs as bad are the type of carbs people commonly eat.

The anti-carb trend is a scary example of the lack of education we have in regard to nutrition.

        • DP

No…all calories make you fat but the glucose in sugar (50%) like free fatty acids in fatty foods are utilized by all the bodies cells whereas the fructose of sugar (the other 50% of sucrose/=table sugar) ONLY goes to the liver where it is mostly converted to VLDL – the very worst fat for arteries. If you don’t know the kinetics of denovolipogenesis maybe you should look it up. Every one who is not glycogen depleted (2 hours of workout) makes half of thee carb calories they eat into the most atherogenic fat that is stored in the worst (belly area) fat. So sodas and Big Gulps are indeed a major source of Fat A$$es – we know scientifically as well as by common sense…

      • Sk8eycat

Thanks, No Actually. I Use butter, cream, bacon, all the so-called no-nos, I avoid simple carbohydrates like refined starches and sugars… I’ve lost 25 lbs, and kept them off for 2 years. I am semi-disabled, and can’t exercise. All vigorous exercise does is make you hungrier.

Everybody should read GOOD CALORIES, BAD CALORIES by Gary Taubes. He did his research. The CDC and NIH have been doing sloppy research and lying to us for more than 50 years about how the body makes cholesterol and stores fat.

I’m wondering how many obese people are living below the poverty level…food banks give out unhealthy food like white bread, white rice, macaroni and sleazy processed cheese….

        • DP

You are right about the data in Gary Taubes book but Gary is a science writer – he is NOT a researcher.
For research look at Bob Lustig (about whom Gary Taubes has written)…The CDC and NIH research is not sloppy but they have funded research that has been influenced by the politics of big sugar and big corn syrup – especially though politicians and the Dept of Agriculture.

Time to establish a Fat Tax – put obese people into a higher tax bracket. Also, a Junk Food Tax – make those nutritionally worthless items more expensive. Put huge corporate taxes on the companies that produce garbage like that. I’m SERIOUS!!! Why in the heck should I pay a dime out of my own pocket to subsidize health care for some walking-wheezing-about-to-stroke-out-and-have-a-heart-attack lard a$$?

  • http://yahoo lyn smith

Okay..Just today we seen a lady with her back to us at the store entrance. Her TUSH was bigger than big!! I mean the ones that jingle janggle and rock back and fourth when she walks!! I told my husband that I promise I will NEVER let my TUSH get that HUMUNGUS!! Hey we had a good laugh anyway..How the heck does someone let it get that big???

    • John

You should be aware that this news story is not about people as you describe at the store. They are referring to anyone who is over the current standard of weight which is a draconian, liberal, anti-meat, anti-fast food ideal. If you are 5’10” and weigh over 150 you are considered “obese” today. Just ten years ago you would not fall into the category. Go to Eastern Europe to see what these people want America to look like. Super skinny smokers running around everywhere.

      • Joel

Sure, just like we are dumbing down our educational system to disguise the fact that American kids are getting lazier and achieving less in school, let’s just revise THIS standard too, that way more of us are within the “healthy range”, that way we can be dumber and fatter and still be doing A-okay! Good luck with that, by the way!

        • Mike

The article says a BMI over 30, meaning at 5′ 10″, one would have to be over 210 pounds.

      • Lindsay

John, Body Mass Index is based on an individual’s weight and height. It was devised between 1830 and 1850, so 10 years ago, one would have fallen into the same category assuming their other measurements remained constant. The current standard of weight cannot be both draconian and liberal, and nowhere in this article did it allude to being anti-meat or anti-fast food. This article does nothing more than present percentages of people from each state with a BMI greater than 30. I don’t believe there is a hidden agenda, and I have a hard time believing the author is trying to lead us to look at Eastern Europe to see what their ideas of Americans are. The number of obese people as well as the number of Americans with Type 2 Diabetes has risen significantly, both of which can be completely reversed by changing one’s diet. Seeing these numbers broken down by state and comparing to what the same numbers were several years ago simply makes people more aware.

    • http://yahoo Tamera Roth

I guess if you have no idea of how she let her self get so far with her obesity–you really shouldnt admit that you laughed at her—being that you dont really know how that happened. I dont want to hurt your feelings but i does make you sound sort of ignorant.

    • http://webpronews sue jones

Hey I have big butt. However, I can write this comment with correct grammer. Lady you didn’t “seen” anyone at the store. You SAW them. I won’t even try to decipher the rest. You are making up descriptive words. So, my question is this, is it better to be obese or ignorant? How did you get through 6th grade with your writing ability?

      • Dave

        Don’t you mean correct “grammar”?

        • http://webpronews sue jones

oh my a typo— get real I made my point and your point is?

      • Dave

While I certainly agree the poster to whom you responded is juvenile and rude, you’d do well to post more carefully if you are going to criticize writing skills. I suspect you have A big butt rather than simply “big butt”. Someone else already pointed out that it should be “grammar”, and your comma usage is suspect in a couple of spots. Shame to ruin a perfectly valid retort like that.

I’ve been raped by gangs, two of my dads best friends and even him, then molested by two older men down in TN. I’m a lil over 200lbs after 3 miscarriages from the rapes and now have two disabled happy made kids. I got fixed after having a boy and a girl. Already been told neither one will be able to have there drivers lics. But the gang is still running free hurting others. My dad and his best friends are reg. sex offenders and my dads been sent to prison the rest of his life at 61yrs old. Finding out that not only did he sexually abuse me but yet my handicap son also when he came down from MI. I will never ever live back in MI due to the high crime state and harm that goes on up there. I’ve even had a major car wreck coming home from my great uncles funeral in 2007 now I have arthritis threw out my entire body making actives limited with my kids sense it’s a rebuilt metal right ankle so even trips are limited unless I have working cruise control. Doctors have said eventually I will have my right knee and right hip replaced due to them being damaged from the wreck. I don’t want no pitty party ect. I just know I could be larger then what I am from my health and my past if I was sticking to a eat all day fast food/starch diet with pop all day. Instead I don’t. I stay in therapy once a week as well with my kids. Even on aug 2nd, 2011 my sons dad died whom he never got to meet, Jan 6th, 2012 my dads mother died, now its my 81 year old neighbor dying from cancer behind his rebuilt nose, behind his eye balls, working its way towards his brain cause medicare won’t work with him on letting him pay for his cancer treatment he needs leaving him to be a big guy for his age cause he loves food. He has no wife and no kids often runs out of food A LOT due to trying to get his cancer removed I help buy him fruits, veggies, ect. My neighbor has been the only one to help play grandpa telling stories to my kids sense he knows how to coming from a family of 17. There’s only 7-8 of them left total others are in worser shape in nursing homes compared to him. I’ve chose to try to stay on a budget, keep health, budget my money and prepaid for when my wheelchair life eventually hits me and eventually my neighbor is no longer with me let alone my kids might not make it to 18 due to brain damage getting worser and going down hill fast and the other has turner syndrome and looks like a 3yr old at age 7 along with seizures affecting her small life. We’re all on several meds here for our health that cause weight gain but we eat healthy instead and try to make a few laps on our road once a day until my hip swells along with my knee, ankle and get falling out of place then we slow down trying to get back in the house so I can relax. Life is about choices. Our Goverment is needing replaced due to there poor choices. I look at life like this it’s the lil things you can do to make a difference but the big major things you do like keep digging more americans up to go over to fight the wars knowing we got enough out there making our country lose more money, more family lives hurt, some kids unborn never meeting there hero, let alone drug use, rape, murder, and molestation those are all major scars on a persons life. If we all want world peace we need to be nice, accept people for whom they are and do a small things on your budget to make a difference not just for yourself but others. No matter how bad you feel remember to your a special person to someone in someone’s life as well even if it is a proud parent, teacher ect. Make a difference people, Seriously!

For the love of God, people should stop using “ignorant” when they mean “offensive”. It is never, in any way, ignorant per se to call people fat, redneck, stupid, or any other pejorative term. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge, not a lack of civility. While we are on the subject, ignorant is not technically an insult itself. I am for example completely ignorant of Finnish banjo playing statistics. It doesn’t mean I am rude or insulting about Finns who like the banjo; it simply means I have no knowledge of the topic.

Nobody is reading this and is thinking “well lets move outta here and we wont be a Fat ass!” Somebody wasted a lot of money for people who probably don’t live in Mississippi to read crap like this. So I hope if you are skinny and live in New York you feel better reading this. I’m an avid hunter and I travel to Mississippi every year to hunt on an old military buddies family farm. This article’s title is misleading. “Fattest State in America Revealed by the CDC”: The fattest State is California with 8,970,675 obese people, and New York with 4,768,073 obese people with this writer’s own sourced reference. Louisiana’s population is 4.5 million with 1,527,995 obese people. Mississippi’s population is 2,078,512 with 1,039,500 obese people. 100% of both LA and MS’s combined obese population is less than either CA or New York’s obese populations, each, respectively. So the fattest states in total numbers is CA and NY, by the actual fattest numbers, not by a % of their respective populations.

Since the title of this writer’s article did not distinguish between total obese state populations, and/or by the % of state obese populations compared to each state, (in the title of this article), their numbers are misleading. As you can see, the fattest states are New York and California, not LA and MS, and LA and MS come nowhere near NY and CA in total state obese populations by the numbers. Junk fat science.

The numbers refer to proportions; they are the fraction of the whole population that is obese. If California had the same fraction of obese people as the “fattest State”, they would have over 13 million obese people.

@Julie – That kind of life story explosion is best saved for therapy. I didn’t even read the whole convoluted mess but it was way too much info. Get therapy.

I wonder why so many of the comments on this article are irritated and angry, if not furious. Could it be that they are written by obese people. Obesity IS a problem: face it and fix it!

The states with the highest percentage of blacks have the highest rates of obesity. Mississippi has a higher percentage of blacks than any other state. South Carolina and Louisiana are close behind. It is well documented that blacks tend to have a poorer diet due to a lack of nutritional education and fewer choices. They frequent fast food restaurants more often than the population as a whole. Someone said these are red/Republican states. It isn’t the Republicans that are driving the numbers higher. Over 90% of all Federal Prisoners call themselves Democrats. What kind of conclusion do you reach with that statistic?

Truth be told, it seems like half of America or more is obese. The fact is they keep giving people more reason too sit and be lazy, and the majority of people with that option will take it. Go outside do something active, not cause your “fat” but for your health.
