The Catskills condo complex that inspired the setting for the film “Dirty Dancing” went up in flames on Saturday, and even though the movie wasn’t filmed there, it’s sad to see a little bit of Dirty Dancing history lost forever.

Kellerman’s, the resort where Johnny Castle taught Baby Houseman to dance, was based on Brown’s Hotel, which had been standing since 1944. The fire that consumed it this past weekend was deemed the largest in Catskills history and took more than 300 firefighters to combat it; luckily no one was injured, but seven of the nine buildings in the complex were destroyed.

Brown’s was in good company as inspiration, almost as famous as The Stanley Hotel in Colorado, which inspired Stephen King’s book The Shining.

The following scene from the film shows Baby getting her first glimpse of Johnny (Patrick Swayze) and her first taste of the glamorous world of dancing (well, glamorous to her, anyway).

Unfortunately this is NOT true. Almost ALL of the film was shot at Mountain Lake in Virginia, with I think a few scenes at Lake Lure NC.
The Dirty Dancing website confirms this, with many pictures of Patrick Swayze and the actual film locations. I have been in that hotel several times and can confirm the exact location where pictures of Swayze were taken.

NOT True. Almost all of the film was hot on location at Mountain Lake Resort in Virginia. The Dirty Dancing website confirms this, and I have been in the hotel several times on the exact locations where the pictures of Swayze were shot.

If you all would read instead of saying the article isn’t true, the article even says in the first sentence it wasn’t filmed there, it just inspired the movie.

So sorry to hear about the fire. Brown’s Hotel was a big part of my childhood. Every summer the last week in August we vacationed there until I was about 16 years old. Met first boyfriend there and so many great memories of the place. Even met Jerry Lewis when he was at the hotel. So sad and upset!
