  • Captain Olimar was one of the more interesting combatants in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I never really got the hang of him, but players that did were a continuous thorn in my side. Those players will then be happy to know that the tiny space captain from Pikmin will be back in the latest installment.

Nintendo announced today through its official Smash Bros. Web site that Captain Olimar will indeed be returning for the latest installment on both Wii U and 3DS. Unfortunately, Nintendo didn’t provide any additional details regarding the character, like if his Final Smash or move set has changed.

They did, however, share a lot of screenshots of what Olimar looks like in game:

Nintendo didn’t share any images of what Captain Olimar will look like on the 3DS version of the title, but you can be assured that he will grace the handheld version as well. Game director Masahiro Sakurai has said that he wants to keep the character roster the same across both versions even if that means having fewer characters than in previous games.

Olimar is the first character to be announced after the game was formerly unveiled at E3 2013. If it’s anything like the Smash Dojo for Brawl, we’ll probably see a lot more characters and stages announced before the end of the year. In between that, Sakurai has committed to posting a new screenshot from the game every day to show the development’s progress.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS will launch at some point in 2014.
