Bill Self succeeded Roy Williams as coach of the Kansas Jayhawks and ever since then he has been overburdened with questions about Williams. Over the weekend, Williams had the opportunity to answer questions about Self and being defeated by the Jayhawks.

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports suggested that Williams was completely unprepared for his opposition’s powerful triangle of triumph and believes that it was Self’s intense coaching that gave the Jayhawks the winning edge:

Self’s lockdown of the Tar Heels was so crafty that Ol’ Roy literally had no idea what hit him. It was a triangle-and-two defense, playing man-to-man on Carolina shooters Harrison Barnes and Reggie Bullock and zoning point guard Stilman White and big men Tyler Zeller and John Henson. The junk defense shut down the Heels’ prolific offense as Kansas pulled away in the final eight minutes to win 80-67. Carolina scored just three points in the final 8:34.

Williams was uncertain how long the Jayhawks played the triangle-and-two combo defense:

em>”I know they did for one possession, and they may have for another possession,” Williams said. “I’m not sure about that.”

Carolina didn’t make a single field goal off its set offense in the final 8½ minutes. The Heels were shut out for the final 3:57.

The loss has left many Tar Heels players devastated:

Kendall Marshall is a guard for the Heels said, “It hurts. This was a great team and we had great goals and it doesn’t feel like we quite achieved them. But we played as hard as we could and just came up a little bit short.”

The defeat also left Stilman White in tears.

Twitter users have this to say about the loss and Williams’ coaching ability:

So Roy Williams is not a big game coach, yet he has as many championships as the 4 final 4 coaches combined? Ridiculous!(image) 7 minutes ago via txt ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

oh yeah i told yall roy williams tries to get by on talent instead of good coaching. kansas adjusted, roy williams didn’t(image) 9 minutes ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Roy Williams is an idiot: How can you not see Kansas was in a triangle and two on defense?

How is it possible that Harrison Barnes and Roy Williams thought that #Kansas was in the Triangle-2 defense for a “possession or 2?” pitiful(image) 30 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

How is that when he won 2 NCAA with UNC RT @IAmSimSity: Roy Williams hurting for leaving Kansas as a coach. It’s okay though. #TarheelNation(image) 1 hour ago via Echofon ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Roy musta outcoached Self for 3/4 of the game to stay even considering that he had lost his starting PG…..

btw Heather, it is Kendall Marshall, not Marsh….

I guess it’s easy to be “outcoached” when your missing the nations best point guard due to injury. What a bunch of dumbf#@&s!

Roy is part of the Dean Smith/UNC/Williams era…You run a set scheme, you recruit the best athletes to run the scheme and you win. The problem is a great coach who actually coaches can take a group of above average athletes and make it to the Final 4 and Roy sits there looking stupid because the defense isn’t standard fare and has a stupid interview post game. UNC fans…didn’t have your best point guard, well chew on this, Taylor would have whipped his ass yesterday…oh yeah, last I heard it is a team sport. Thank God Roy is out of Kansas and Bill is in. I would rather have a great coach with good players than a good coach with great players. Keep him UNC fans and know his days are coming to an end. How many more losses like this is it going to take before you throw him to the wolves.

I am a TarHeel fan and have been for 50 years and for the third time I can remember the system that UNC runs worked against them. Once again a coach ,Bill Self outcoached a UNC Coach in a big game. Al McGuire bested Dean Smith and so did Bobby Knight in NCAA finals with weaker teams. I do not think it is a coincidence that Dean’s two titles came against those no coaching coaches Steve Fisher and John Thompson. Kansas had an advantage over UNC because of the injury situation but I thought Coach Williams panicked and quit coaching at the end. I never saw him do that before. It may have not caused the accident but the lack of CPR doomed the patient. Trying to talk to my fellow Carolina fans about this has caused them to attack me and for the first time I see the Carolina arrogance I have denied for the 50 years I have been a Carolina fan. Carolina was in the game until Self went tto a triangle and two and Williams failed to counter it. Why was McAdoo on the bench and Henson in the game if his wrist was such an issue. Carolina needed offense not defense and their number one scorer sat out the end game. Its just basketball but the truth is the truth. I still think Coach Williams is afine man and everyone fails in his job occasionally . Unfortunately his occured on national TV. GO HEELS.

well put Mr. Young, it is refreshing to see such a post and I agree, why was Mcadoo setting , my fellow KU fans wondered the same but approved of the decision. I hear alot about Marshall, and there is no doubt he is a very talented player but , he did not play in the first half of that game and UNC looked like a Final Four Team with out doubt, but when things feel apart it became Marshals fault that UNC lost, I dont by that at all, UNC lost because Bill Self outcoached Roy Williams. Roy has a bench full of McDonald All Americans to use but when one is gone they can no longer win. I like Roy and it hurt when he left KU, but that wound has healed. When in Kansas there was always talk that Roy couldnt win the big on , why did we say that…because he can be out coached, Good Season Heels, and good luck Roy. ROCK CHALK

Roy is a great recruiter and a very good coach. He is not a he can win with his and then win with “yours” type of coach, but he is a good coach. He was playing this game with a hand tied behind his back due to injuries. You can say that is an excuse, but it’s not an excuse when it’s valid. Anyone who doesn’t think the Heels would’ve won that game even with only Marshall being there did not watch enough of our games this year.

UNC looked fine in the first half with out Marshall, so please explain that to me. UNC fans quit putting this loss on the shoulders of Marshall and face this fact, Roy OUT-COACHED by Bill Self, it happens, deal with it. ROCK CHALK
