Jim Parsons: Gay Star Of “Big Bang Theory” Comes Out

Usually when a celebrity comes out, they either do it in a big way–like going on a talk show to announce it–or they do it amid a swirl of rumors. It’s rare these days for a star to be open but quiet about their personal life, yet that’s exactly what “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons is doing.

The Emmy-winning actor–who pays nerdy Sheldon Cooper on the show–has managed to go public with his status in a very low-key way, talking about his 10-year relationship to The New York Times, who did a piece about his work on Broadway. As Sheldon, audiences get to see a very specific side of Parsons, but onstage he shines in the vast array of complicated emotions he brings to his characters, particularly in “The Normal Heart”, which has garnered rave reviews and features Parsons as a young gay AIDS activist.

“If I ever wrote a script myself, it would be strongly emotional material,” he said. “Every time I think about writing, comedy doesn’t interest me in the slightest. I can play comedy, but I don’t think in terms of comic dialogue.”

Perhaps because of the popularity of the show, fans seem to be having a hard time equating one of their favorite television characters with a gay persona, and sadly, even in this day and age, sexual preference is always going to be huge news regardless of the celebrity’s plans otherwise. Still, Parsons has quite a fan base and is garnering support for the courageous way he chose to talk about his personal life.

I admire the willed casualness with which the Times buries Jim Parsons’s coming out as gay on page three of a profile: http://t.co/4CUmNOpZ

Still love his character and the show :)

He’s still just as hilarious as Sheldon Coooer. He’s still a brilliant and talented actor. He’s still the same person he was before we learned of his orientation. If anything, I admire Jim Parsons even more now. Bazinga!

OMG, wasn’t it obvious in every television appearance he ever did? I thought he came out a long time ago :))) I love him to death! He is an unbelievable actor and comedian! Screw anybody who is going to think worse of him now that he’s out.

  • YPM

It’s so silly and even kind of dumb how this is considered “big news”. (LOVE SHELDON!!!)

It took courage and strength of character for Jim Parsons to come out. It is his life, let him live it in whatever way makes him happy. What goes on between two consenting adults is no one else’s business. Congratz to you Jim Parsons!

As the mother of a gay son, I will be so happy if the day finally arrives when a persons sexuality is no longer news. Being gay doesn’t make Jim Parsons any different than he was before the world knew about it. I love Big Bang Theory, and all the actors in it. And I have many gay friends who I love dearly. Who a person sleeps with is no one elses business.

I’m shocked that people are so surprised. Can’t remember when I found out, but I thought this was common knowledge for well over a year… Either way, he is amazing and deserves every emmy that he has won and will continue to win for years to come. Who cares about his sexual orientation?

  • Rye

How on earth is anybody actually surprised by this? 😉
(Good on him for coming out, by the by.)

Hey there its fantastic that there are more stars coming out and who cares they make us all laugh and they are human so for the ones that have a problem remember its whats inside that matters. Good on you Sheldon just keep up all the great work you and all the other guys are doing on The Big Bang Theory you always know how to make us all laugh. And congrats on being true to yourself.

One of these tweets are actually mine and completely taken out of context! Jim Parson’s is a fantastic actor, gay or not. And these sorts of articles are just a way for people to create a controversial issue via social media from nothing. So ridiculous.
