Amanda Righetti has confirmed that she will, in fact, be leaving The Mentalist. Her last appearance on the hit CBS show will come in early December. Righetti isn’t the only actor bidding The Mentalist adieu either. Owain Yeoman has announced that he is leaving, too. This means huge changes are coming to the show. These two have played such major roles on the show that it certainly won’t be easy to fill their shoes. This will no doubt mean Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon–portrayed by Simon Baker and Robin Tunney, respectively, will have even larger roles in the coming seasons.

Amanda plays the role of Grace Van Pelt on The Mentalist. Owain Yeoman plays her fairly new TV husband, Agent Wayne Rigsby. The two tied the knot, following a surprise engagement, in a romantic wedding ceremony during the sixth season of the show.

“I feel like the time is probably right,” Amanda Righetti says of leaving The Mentalist, during an interview with TV Line, adding, “It’s the end of one thing but the beginning of something new.”

She also spills the beans about the show’s post-Red John era, which begins on December 1st, explaining that the show will then jump two years ahead of the Red John saga.

“Basically, they have their own private security company,” Righetti says of Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby. “So we sort of are outsourced and freelanced with the FBI, and that’s how we fit in.”

Sadly, this means that Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman will only appear in two December episodes before they leave The Mentalist. Do you think their absence will be strongly felt by fans? It definitely will be interesting to learn who producers will bring on board as new characters on the show.

Might the departure of these popular characters seriously impact the viewership of The Mentalist? Or do Simon Baker and Robin Tunney carry the majority of the show?

Not sure, I think it will give some new life to the show if they are moving ahead two years and a new cast comes in. They’ll probably be back for guest spots in years to come.

I’ve seen every episode and generally enjoy the show. I’m glad they’re finally resolving the Red John storyline. I like Rigsby and Van Pelt but they’re not vital. Cho is by far the best secondary character and I hope they focus more on him and not bring in full-time replacements. The show’s all about Jane and Lisbon.

    • carmen

for me all main characters were vital for the serie, they were a team. I dont like Van pelt and Rigsby exit the show

  • Bill Walsh

I am thrilled the the Red John saga is coming to a close. It’s about 2 years too late. Enough already. Let’s see Patrick Jane’s mind be set free of Red John and concentrate on other cases and give him a love interest. Be it Lisbon or someone else.

  • Kristen

I am so glad these two are leaving the show, the story arc of their relationship just drives me nuts, and neither character is really vital to the show. I think both of them leaving pretty much confirms what I’ve been thinking regarding Red John for quite some time.

    • John

I agree completely. I never cared for the yeoman character. Janes/Lisbon ( like Holmes/Watson )is the story.

    • cece

Could not agree more! I record the show & fast forward it when those two on the screen

I THINK IT’S A SHAME SHE IS LEAVING . SHE WAS STARTING TO STAND OUT. WE COULD HAVE DONE AWAY WITH THE WEDDING.I HOPE WHOEVER TAKES HER PLACE IS AS PRETTY AND SEXEY AS SHE WAS.

    • Larry

I agree with George.I’ll miss Amanda a lot.She was the prettiest one on the show. When the story got boring,at least she was there to look at especially during the Red John series.Really hated that part.Glad that’s over.

  • Mary

I am so sick of the Red John situation being dragged out – and so are my friends, all once loyal fans of the Mentalist. End it now and move on.

  • Becky

Sad she leaving. She may not contribute much to the show but she never over acted ,they better get someone really good to replace her

I love the Mentalist and hoping that this series goes on for a long long time. I will miss the Van Pelt and Rigsgy characters, but I feel that the Jane, Lisbon and the Cho characters are by far the most important characters to this series!! I sure hope that Tim Kang, Simon Baker and Robin Tunney do not leave this series!! These 3 characters carry this series completely!!

  • Ally

I will actually miss the characters that Righetti and Yeoman portray…Van Pelt and Rigsby. Given the story line always having the “backdrop” of Red John, these two provided some “normalcy” to the people involved with catching him…always reliable, always good at their jobs, that sort of thing, as well as ultimately having a normal romance/marriage in the end. Obviously, Jane is always obsessed and Lisbon is too, in her own way. But? the last show showed definite changes, so? fans of the show will move on with those changes and I wish these two actors well!!

  • LM

SO sorry to see these two leave :-( Loved their characters and how they related to the rest of their Mentalist family. But, let’s see who the producers bring in to replace them…will be interesting!!

  • carmen

very bad that amanda and yeoman are leaving the show….i like all main characters….i dude i will follow the show…

  • Naomi Cowan-Barkley

I like these characters very much, but I will give the restructured show a chance. Rigsby and Van Pelt could be guests every now and then. Of course, Amanda Righetti had a break for a while when she was off taking extended training and when she was working in a different department. What about Tim Kang? I liked the interaction of all the characters so I hope any new characters fit as well.

The Red John stuff was way too grim considering Jane’s generally whimsical attitude. It really dragged. I loved the romance between Wayne and Grace. It was sweet.I just don’t think they know what the viewers want to see.

  • D V

I am disappointed that Van Pelt and Rigsby are leaving the show. It’s going to be hard to replace them. Wish they could have had more of a story line on them. And I am so glad like all the other comments, that Red John is finally dead/gone as it was getting old. I really like Cho too and I hope he gets more star time. I guess we will just have to wait and see how it goes with the show’s changes.

    • carmen

to bad they are leaving the show. Nobody can eplace this amazing characters

  • M_M

I’m really sad to see them go!!! I am finding it it weird to have jumped 2 years into the future…and now to realize we’re also losing 2 great characters. Bummer. Just glad Cho is sticking around.

  • Micky

It would be nice if they still had a role, even if minor in nature. Maybe the FBI could enlist their skills on some of the investigations.

  • iris

its a shame that Van Pelt and Rigsby are leaving the show. not only did i enjoy the relationship Grace and Wayne shared, i also found the Cho/Rigsby partnership funny and amusing. i think the loss of both major characters is a loss for the show. i generally enjoyed the CBI team as a whole and loved all the main characters because each actor had a vital role in creating the unique dynamic of “the mentalist”.

    • carmen

totally agree with Iris, i dont feel the same with this new FBI characters.

  • Grace

I think the new characters are boring and stilted. Van Pelt and Rigsby were much more entertaining. Good Bye Red John. thank goodness you’re gone.
