Alyson Hannigan Talks Emotional Series Finale

By: Lindsay McCane - March 26, 2014

Alyson Hannigan has spent nearly a decade of her life playing the character Lily on the television series How I Met Your Mother.

With the series finale quickly approaching, Hannigan sat down with Time to talk about her feelings about the show coming to an end.

Hannigan explained that filming the final season wasn’t as hard as she expected. She, and the other cast members, were very busy during filming so it made it easier for them to get used to not seeing each other every day.

“You know, I think I did most of my grieving at the end of the season because now I feel like, ‘Oh, that was great!’ This ninth season was shot around so many different schedules, and it was such a weird season that it was almost like our methadone,” she explained. “It was a nice way of getting used to not seeing everyone every day of the week. So it prepared us for the finality of it all.”

The finale is set to air on March 31, and Hannigan informed us that she would be watching the episode from the comfort of her home due to her having to film a pilot that day. She said it was probably best that she stay home because she would probably get very emotional watching the show finally come to its conclusion. “… all the blubbering I’ll do, I should probably stay at home,” Hannigan said. “I shouldn’t be out in public.”

Fans are anxiously awaiting to find out if the mother will be revealed. Some believe that she has been dead all along, but Hannigan wouldn’t confirm the rumor. “We could all be dead. Who knows? But I just love that even though it’s only [two] episodes left, people are still trying to figure out the end. As Barney would say, wait for it!”

The only thing that Hannigan would say is that the episode will definitely be a tearjerker. “I killed a lot of trees with my crying,” Hannigan revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday. “99 percent of the room was crying. That’s executives and everything.”

40? still remember her on Buffy. as just a friend stating she looks even more beautiful 40? where did time go?

  • Renee Plunket

She will always be Willow to me.

Maybe Ted died and her new husband is reading a journal. That would explain why Bob Saget is the voice of Ted and not Ted himself.

    • Jen Anne Ritter

Bob Saget is older Ted;that’s why he narrates. That was already established during the pilot episode 9 years ago.

“Fans are anxiously awaiting to find out if the mother will be revealed” I’m so confused by this statement. They have shown the mother a dozen times in this season already.

WAIT FOR IT! Lindsay McCane is a moron! Lindsay McCane gets award for WORST article ever. She did ZERO research. Couldn’t one of her editors have told her the mother was revealed at the end of LAST season and has been a REGULAR on the show the entire final season. All she needed to do was Google it and she’d have found Cristin Miloti has played the mother all season. She even saved Robin and Barney and Lily and Marshall’s marriages before even meeting Ted.

I don’t think she means revealed as in we find out who she is, I think she means revealed as in will you see her in 2030 – since there’s so much speculation that by that stage she’d passed away.

So glad this show is FINALLY over, quit watching after Season 2 – it got very boring & too predictable. Surprised it lasted this long!

So if you stopped watching the show after S2, what does it matter to you if the show is over or not?

    • SZ4L

Yeah why do you care if a tv show you don’t watch is over? It was still a good show after the second season or it probably wouldn’t have stayed on the air so long.

    • Brandon Michael Carr

if you stopped at season 2, then your opinion doesn’t matter 😛 later seasons actually became better then the first and second seasons

  • Ernie Flamik

was a Monday staple for me! Christin Militoi is a hottie too. Will miss seeing her. Maybe both will pop up elsewhere in other series

    • SZ4L

She’s way too good for Ted

  • Chloe Smith

I never liked this show. 30 Rock, Rules of Engagement, How I Met Your Mother, three overrated shows if there ever were any and boring to boot. I am surprised they lasted as long as they did.

    • Ronster64

      Amen to that, Chloe..

Do we know that “the kids” are actually listening to Ted in person, or is it possible that they’re sitting on the couch while watching a series of videos that Ted recorded for them (because he knew that he wasn’t going to be around for them later)? It does sound like something that “Ted” would do. With all the talk about their mom potentially dying, you’ve got to at least remain open to the alternative possibility. Properly executed, it would also be a real tear jerker ending. We’ll see in a few days.
