$3,000 Nissan: Affordable Car For Those Who Need It

A new car with a $3,000 price tag sounds too good to be true, but according to Nissan, it’s happening soon in what they call “emerging markets” and what Examiner.com calls “third world countries” and will mark the return of an old, familiar brand: Datsun.

Although the car will initially be pushed in markets where new cars are an untouchable luxury, it’s being predicted that the U.S. will see it sometime in the not-so-distant future, as well. Unfortunately, making the car so affordable will not be easy, and will require the auto maker to leave out features which have long come standard in most other markets, such as automatic transmissions, locks, and windows, as well as various airbags and safety upgrades.

Nissan spokespeople say they hope to have six different models available by 2014 which will be cheaper than any new car on the market other than a few specialty cars out of China and India. As of right now, Nissan’s least expensive car is still priced around $8,000, which makes the new Datsun quite a jump.

The company does acknowledge that the move won’t be an easy one, considering the old Datsun was known for both economy and comfort; the new models simply can’t have both. But the transition into these “emerging markets” could boost Nissan’s profile as they prove themselves to be leaders in one of the fastest-growing category.

why not just stick to one make and model and after success with just one model, then move on to bring other model as demand dictates, that way you can give price and comfort.

  • Barry Jeffers

I’m a Nissan salesman. The cheapest one I know of in this country is the Versa sedan, in the $low teens.

    • Tercel GTS

This is about what I figured. If Nissan was selling a car for 8,000 here I’d see tons of them on the roads. The fact that you see those ugly Smarts proves we need inexpensive transportation.

  • Green Mom

This sound like a dream come true, but think about everyone in China and India now having cars, what that means for our environment. Car prices should be trending UPWARD, to reduce carbon emissions and encourage people to take public transportation. As the mayor of Bogota said recently, “”A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation.”

  • RAMONA

  • Connie

I think yes, I am stuck with no car. It litererally feels as if I’m in prison

  • L. Jean

Oh, heck yeah! I want one yesterday! Never needed all that automatic crap on a car anyway; the one I have now has electrical problems and the windows won’t roll down in the heat at all! I’d stand in line for a car with regular old hand crank windows! I mean, me and my husband have been saying for years that we wish they’d put out a nice simple affordable car without all that extra stuff on it. Do you even need six whole models? I don’t even care what color it is–I want one now.

  • RAMONA

    • think

Hey bob it says they already have an 8000 car so why would it be more. And you need safety regulations. I bet your family does not drive around in a metal wagon with no seat belts, good brakes, tires, etc. You know basics.

      • Lan

@think – You’re wasting your time trying to reason with a troll. It doesn’t matter what the article’s subject is about… it could be about plastic, beef, paint or anything else and Bob would use it to bash liberals. I mean, what out-of-touch-with-reality people would even momentarily fall for the accusation that Obama is responsible for 40 year-old safety mandates on cars. And by accusing Obama of this, his insinuation is that he doesn’t agree with mandating these safety features. And you are most assuredly correct that he wouldn’t be driving a golf cart on the highway himself, even if it had A/C. He probably drives a huge Yukon or Expedition at run-for-your-life speeds because the Koch brothers pay he and the other trolls enough to afford it. And accusing liberals of having knee-jerk reactions — what a hoot! Liberals are more apt to know what is REALLY happening in their world and seeing the bigger picture because they distrust corporate news for the money making, sensational, waste of time that they are — unless you are tracking hurricane progress. They most certainly don’t fall for what spews from a propaganda channel that poses as a news channel, or from the hate speech from the abundance of noise makers, because they are more prone to using numerous fact checking websites before they believe what they hear and read, and before they just forward yet another email lie without verifying it first. And Bob is such a knee-jerker himself that he didn’t stop to think that cheap cars opened up a whole market in China, allowing millions of less affluent Chinese to own a car for the first time which spiked gas consumption. But even if a $3000 Datsun were to come to the U.S. it wouldn’t change anything, because anyone who could afford one could already afford to own an abundance of used cars in that price range. If anything, owning a more fuel efficient lighter, new car instead of an older gas waster might reduce fuel consumption a hair, but probably not enough to make a blip on the radar. So you are just wasting your time responding to anyone from a Koch brothers boiler room who is paid well to demonize liberals by inspiring fear through the straw men they create though false emails and phone calls and phony “news”, or who scour Wikipedia to change damning facts about Corporate America, conservative history and anything else that exposes the conservative agenda. And the ironic thing is that Bob is just a stupid pawn in schemes of the Koch brothers and the rest of the the ruling rich of both parties. Because if/when that crowd ever gets their way, they will chew Bob up and spit him out with the rest of us.

  • Bob

Ridiculous ! People with a jerk knee reaction who vote for Obama would want this in the U.S.

But think about it; Nissan wants to make money so you won’t see it in the U.S. at $3,000. First, by the time the car is built with Obama government mandated safety features, it’ll be 3 to 4 times more expensive.

Secondly, the fuel consumption by new customers will drive world oil prices up (just like when Chinese customers bought cars for the first time) and you see $8 per gallon at U.S. pumps.

Finally, what about the quality of the car? It’ll be built by the cheapest labor possible and built with weak engines to make it less advanced, less expensive, and consume more fuel. By the time you add on all the features Americans expect in autos, it’ll be in the same price range as its competitors here.

    • http://www.yahoo.com Mike

      Bob,

Obama didn’t mandate the safety feature, the government does. These have been in place long before Obama took office.

also you obviously know nothing about oil. The price is a result of Walstreet, they set the price based on future expectations. Supply has never had a problem keeping up with demand. Wars scare people and the price goes up due to uncertainty. It is not controled by supply and demand like most economic factors.

It would be great if you would just SHUT UP!! I’m so sick and tired of you republicans steadily going off on President Obama. All it is, is “blah, blah, blah.” The loudest thing you can do is vote for Romney, so please close your lips!

A few years ago traveling from Northeast Louisiana down to the Coast of Mississippi I made up a story that sounds just like the car that may or not be available in the near future… the only people I told were my mother, my daughter and my son. We had gone down to southern Mississippi to pick my son up from his father’s house and I needed a non-caffeine way to stay awake so I told the story going down to my ex’s house to my mother and daughter and then re-told the story to my son on the way home. I think someone else would of thought the idea utterly ridiculous.

  • heather Amadeo

heres an idea, FIX THE PIECE OF CRAPS YOUR SELLING NOW, IE THE 2004/2005 NISSAN MAXIMAS WITH THE TRANSMISSION DEFECT THAT NISSAN REFUSES TO RECALL.

  • JTL

I hope these will be available in the USA. Nissan already makes cheaper models, but they are not available in the U.S. The main problem with the USA is the marketing associated with automobiles equates the price of the vehicle with the length of your d*ck.

  • Chris Smith

I love your Datsuns..please give us Americans a chance too to buy Daysun for our families!
