For more than a decade, Apple’s iMessage has functioned as something more than a messaging app. It’s been a social sorting mechanism — a status symbol encoded in blue and green bubbles that shaped how tens of millions of Americans, particularly younger ones, chose their smartphones. That era may be ending faster than anyone expected.
Google’s latest update to its Messages app now supports end-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS chats, meaning conversations between Android and iPhone users can finally be both feature-rich and secure. The update, which began rolling out in late June 2025, eliminates what had been iMessage’s last credible technical advantage over the universal messaging standard. And the implications for Apple’s grip on the U.S. smartphone market are significant.
As Android Police reported, the new Google Messages update brings encrypted RCS messaging to cross-platform conversations — not just Android-to-Android chats, where encryption had already been available. This means that when an Android user texts an iPhone user over RCS, the conversation is now protected by the same encryption protocol that iMessage has long touted as a core differentiator. The green bubble still appears. But the green bubble now carries the same privacy protections as the blue one.
That matters enormously.
Apple adopted RCS support in iOS 18, released in late 2024, after years of resistance. The company had long dismissed RCS and kept cross-platform messaging deliberately degraded, defaulting to SMS/MMS when communicating with Android devices. The result was compressed images, broken group chats, no read receipts, and — most importantly — the social stigma of the green bubble. Apple’s strategy wasn’t accidental. Internal communications revealed during the Epic Games v. Apple trial showed Apple executives explicitly discussing how iMessage’s lock-in effect discouraged users, especially teenagers, from switching to Android.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, wrote in a 2020 email that “iMessage on Android would simply serve to remove an obstacle for iPhone families giving their kids Android phones.” The quiet part, said out loud.
But regulatory pressure, particularly from the European Union, and sustained public campaigning by Google forced Apple’s hand. When Apple finally added RCS to the iPhone, it did so with a caveat: no end-to-end encryption for cross-platform chats. Apple pointed to the RCS standard itself, which at the time didn’t include encryption for messages between different platforms. The company wasn’t wrong on the technical point. But critics argued Apple was hiding behind a standards gap it had little incentive to close.
Now Google has closed it unilaterally, at least on its end. The encryption protocol used is based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) standard, which the GSM Association — the industry body overseeing RCS — formally adopted as part of the RCS Universal Profile earlier this year. Google’s Messages app has implemented MLS for cross-platform chats, and the encryption works when the other party’s client also supports it. Apple’s Messages app on iOS 18 does support the updated RCS Universal Profile, meaning encrypted cross-platform messaging is functional today between current Android and iPhone devices.
The technical parity is now nearly complete. RCS between Android and iPhone supports high-resolution photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, group chat management, and now encryption. The feature gap between an iMessage-to-iMessage conversation and an RCS cross-platform conversation has shrunk to almost nothing.
Almost. Apple still restricts certain features to iMessage-native conversations — Tapbacks with full emoji reactions on cross-platform chats arrived only recently, and some interactive features like shared activities remain exclusive to Apple-to-Apple exchanges. The blue bubble itself persists as a visual marker. But the functional differences that once made texting an Android user feel like stepping back into 2010? Largely gone.
The social consequences could be profound. Research from surveys conducted by groups including Piper Sandler has consistently shown that among U.S. teens, iPhone ownership hovers around 87%, with iMessage cited as a primary reason for brand loyalty. The green bubble carried real social weight — stories of teenagers being excluded from group chats or mocked for their bubble color weren’t apocryphal. They were documented by publications from The Wall Street Journal to The Verge for years.
Strip away the technical inferiority of green-bubble conversations, and what remains is just a color. A color that Apple controls, yes, but one that becomes harder to weaponize socially when the underlying experience is identical. A 17-year-old receiving a perfectly crisp video, an encrypted message, and a read receipt from an Android-using friend may start to wonder what the blue bubble is actually signifying.
Google clearly understands this dynamic. The company spent years running a public pressure campaign under the banner “Get The Message,” directly calling on Apple to adopt RCS. That campaign was criticized by some as cynical marketing — Google, after all, has launched and killed more messaging platforms than most companies have launched products, period. But the campaign worked. And now, with encryption in place, Google is positioned to argue that its messaging experience isn’t just comparable to iMessage. It’s interoperable in a way iMessage never tried to be.
Samsung, the largest Android manufacturer, has been pushing RCS adoption aggressively as well. Samsung Messages supports the standard, and the company’s marketing in 2025 has increasingly emphasized messaging feature parity with iPhone as a selling point. For carriers like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T — all of which support RCS through their networks — the encryption update simplifies their messaging story and reduces support headaches caused by the old SMS fallback.
There’s a global dimension too. In most of the world outside the United States, iMessage’s dominance never took hold. WhatsApp, WeChat, LINE, and Telegram command messaging in their respective regions. The blue bubble phenomenon is largely an American one, tied to the unusually high iPhone market share in the U.S. and the country’s historical reliance on carrier-based SMS rather than internet messaging apps. RCS with encryption doesn’t need to displace WhatsApp globally. It just needs to neutralize iMessage’s advantage domestically — and that’s precisely what it’s doing.
Apple isn’t standing still. The company continues to develop iMessage with features like satellite messaging support, advanced Siri integration, and deeper ties to its hardware lineup through features that depend on the Apple ecosystem — shared AirDrop, Find My integration, and the like. iMessage remains deeply embedded in the iPhone experience in ways that go beyond simple text messaging. But the core value proposition — “your messages are better, safer, and richer when everyone has an iPhone” — is weakening.
For Apple investors, this is worth watching closely. Services revenue, which includes the broader ecosystem stickiness that iMessage supports, has become an increasingly important part of Apple’s financial story. Anything that lowers switching costs between iPhone and Android has downstream effects on hardware sales, App Store revenue, and the lifetime value of each customer. Tim Cook has repeatedly emphasized the installed base and its loyalty. iMessage has been one of the strongest chains binding that base together.
Not the only chain. But a heavy one.
The wireless industry’s response has been quietly supportive. The GSMA’s decision to incorporate MLS-based encryption into the RCS Universal Profile was itself a signal that the industry body sees RCS as the long-term successor to SMS, not merely a stopgap. Carriers have spent years investing in RCS infrastructure, and encryption support validates that investment. It also gives carriers a counterargument when regulators ask about messaging security — they can now point to an encrypted, standards-based protocol that works across all major platforms.
Google’s execution here also deserves scrutiny. The company’s messaging strategy has been, to put it charitably, incoherent for most of the past decade. Hangouts, Allo, Duo, Google Chat, Google Messages — the graveyard of Google communication apps is extensive and well-documented. But with Google Messages and RCS, the company appears to have finally committed to a single path. The app comes preinstalled on most Android phones sold worldwide. It’s the default SMS and RCS client. And with encryption now extending to cross-platform conversations, it offers a complete messaging solution without requiring the other person to download anything.
That last point is critical. WhatsApp requires both parties to have the app. Signal requires both parties. Telegram requires both parties. RCS, as implemented through Google Messages and Apple’s Messages, works between the two dominant smartphone platforms without any additional installation. It’s the successor to SMS in the truest sense — a universal default.
So where does this leave iMessage? Still dominant among iPhone users in the U.S. Still deeply integrated into Apple’s hardware and software stack. Still blue. But its moat is shallower than it was six months ago, and it’s getting shallower with every RCS update. The social pressure that kept teenagers locked into iPhone — the fear of the green bubble — loses its teeth when the green bubble delivers an identical experience.
Apple will likely respond by pushing further into features that require Apple hardware on both ends: spatial audio messages, AR-based communication features tied to Vision Pro, deeper integration with Apple Watch and AirPods. The strategy will shift from “messaging is better on iPhone” to “everything is better when you’re all-in on Apple.” That’s a harder sell to a 16-year-old who just wants to send memes to friends.
The RCS encryption update isn’t a single dramatic moment. It’s the removal of the last technical excuse for iMessage’s superiority in basic messaging. And in an industry where lock-in effects compound over years, the slow erosion of even one major advantage can reshape market dynamics in ways that aren’t immediately visible in quarterly earnings but show up unmistakably over time.
The blue bubble isn’t broken. But it’s leaking. And for the first time, Apple doesn’t have an obvious patch.
