Tumblr Policies: Specific Changes Announced
[ Social Media]

Earlier this month, Tumblr announced that it was working on revamping its privacy policy, terms of service and community guidelines. They posted previews for each, to open them for review and feedback.

Today, the company says it has addressed all of the feedback, and has announced some specific tweaks. “We’ve been delighted to read all of the thoughtful feedback you’ve sent to our policy team, and have hopefully answered every single email. Please let us know if we missed you,” the company writes on its staff blog.

For one, Tumblr says it has clarified that is policy against “tag spam” doesn’t apply to creative and meaningful uses of tags. “You should tag your posts with any useful tag you can think of and feel free to use them for punchlines,” the company says, giving “#britneyspears” as an example.

Tumblr says it has also overhauled its policy on contests, sweepstakes and giveaways, so that these are part of a separate policy, which the company hopes users find easier to understand. The guidelines for contests, sweepstakes and giveaways, by the way are as follows:

1. Fully disclose all of the contest, sweepstakes, or giveaway’s rules including, for example, eligibility restrictions, all entry methods, information about your prizes (including retail value), and odds of winning;

2. Make sure to include in your rules a full release of Tumblr by each person participating, an acknowledgement that the contest, sweepstakes, or giveaway isn’t associated with Tumblr (including, without limitation, that it isn’t administered, sponsored, or endorsed by Tumblr), and a statement that each person participating is giving information to you and not to Tumblr;

3. Only allow entry by individuals who are eighteen or older;

4. Only direct and open your contest, sweepstakes, or giveaway to people who live in your country; and

5. As per our community guideline against non-genuine social gesture schemes, don’t use Tumblr’s social features (like following, reblogging, and liking) as entry methods.
