Google appears ready to repeat itself with the Pixel Watch 5. A fresh leak shows the upcoming wearable will once again rely on the same Qualcomm processor found in the last three generations. The decision leaves some longtime owners underwhelmed. Yet other changes could blunt the frustration.

The details surfaced this week through a listing in the Google Play Console. The device carries the codename “godric.” It pairs the familiar Qualcomm SW5100 platform with 3 gigabytes of RAM. That memory bump marks the first increase since Google entered the smartwatch category. 9to5Google first reported the specs on July 22.

The SW5100 includes four ARM Cortex-A53 cores capped at 1.7 gigahertz and a Qualcomm Adreno 702 graphics unit running at 1 gigahertz. Those figures match the Pixel Watch 4 exactly. They also echo the Pixel Watch 3 and the original Pixel Watch 2. No meaningful clock speed gains. No shift to a newer architecture. Just the same silicon Google has shipped since 2023.

Owners of the Pixel Watch 2 took notice quickly. One Reddit commenter captured the mood. “As a Pixel Watch 2 owner, this is disappointing,” the user wrote. “Support for my watch is ending, but if I upgrade then I will have the same CPU.” The post reflected a broader sense that buyers upgrading from two-year-old hardware might expect more raw power.

But power alone doesn’t tell the full story. The extra gigabyte of RAM could deliver noticeable gains in everyday use. It should help the watch handle on-device AI tasks with less strain. Google has pushed Gemini features heavily across its lineup. More memory often translates into snappier responses when those models run locally. Several commenters pointed to this upside. One noted the bump “should help make Gemini more responsive for people who care about that.” Another added that the added RAM “should make everything run more smoothly.”

Comparisons to rival devices sharpen the critique. Samsung’s latest Galaxy Watch 9 uses Qualcomm’s newer Snapdragon Wear Elite. That chip packs a Cortex-A78 performance core at 2.1 gigahertz plus four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores at 1.95 gigahertz. Qualcomm claims it offers up to five times the CPU performance and seven times the GPU performance in ideal conditions. Notebookcheck highlighted the gap in a report published two days ago.

The Pixel Watch 5 will not chase that level of brute force. Instead Google seems focused on software refinements and integration with its broader Android and Fitbit offerings. Battery life has improved across recent Pixel Watches through better power management rather than hardware leaps. The new model could follow that pattern. And the added RAM might ease pressure on the processor during complex operations. So the same chip need not mean the same experience.

Price adds another layer. Leaks suggest Google will raise the starting cost by about $50. The base 41-millimeter Wi-Fi version could begin at $399. That puts it closer to Apple Watch territory while still trailing the top Samsung models in peak performance. Android Authority detailed the expected pricing earlier this month.

Design changes look minimal from current renders. The Pixel Watch 5 is expected to retain the rounded square shape that has defined the line. Color options may expand with a new “Pyrite” finish. Yet the hardware inside drives most of the conversation right now.

Google has not confirmed any specifications. The company plans to unveil the watch alongside the Pixel 11 series on August 12. Until then leaks will continue to shape expectations. Recent FCC filings showed multiple variants including LTE models. Those documents offered no processor clues but confirmed the product is nearing final hardware validation.

Some analysts argue the conservative chip choice makes strategic sense. Qualcomm’s latest platform remains scarce. Samsung secured much of the initial supply for its Galaxy Watch 9 and Ultra 2. Google may have decided against chasing a limited run of newer silicon. Sticking with a proven part avoids delays and potential yield problems. It also lets the company pour resources into software optimization and AI features that differentiate its devices more than raw benchmarks do.

Still the decision carries risks. Wear OS faces growing pressure from both Apple and emerging health-focused competitors. Users have grown accustomed to annual improvements in responsiveness and feature depth. When a flagship wearable ships with three-year-old silicon the perception of value can suffer. Especially at a higher price.

The TechRadar piece that sparked wider discussion captured this tension well. Its author, a Pixel Watch 2 owner, called the chip choice frustrating yet pointed to the RAM increase as a source of optimism. TechRadar published the analysis on July 24.

Google’s history with its phone lineup offers a parallel. The company long relied on older Snapdragon parts before shifting to custom Tensor chips. Those Tensor processors prioritized AI and camera processing over benchmark leadership. The Pixel Watch could follow a similar road. Rumors of an in-house wearable chip have circulated for years. A 2027 model might finally bring that shift.

For now the Pixel Watch 5 will test whether software smarts and deeper AI integration can outweigh a familiar processor. The added RAM provides a foundation for that bet. It gives the device more headroom for future updates. And it could make current Gemini features feel less like a compromise.

Buyers will weigh these factors against the competition. Samsung’s latest watches promise stronger performance out of the box. Apple’s ecosystem pulls users who value tight integration over flexibility. Google’s advantage has always rested on clean software, accurate Fitbit health tracking and seamless ties to Android phones.

That formula succeeded enough to keep the Pixel Watch viable despite its hardware conservatism. The question now is whether the formula still holds when the price climbs and the chip stays put. Early reactions suggest many fans remain open to the trade-off. They just want the final product to prove the added memory delivers the promised lift.

Google has three weeks to make its case. The August event will likely showcase new health metrics, smarter notifications and deeper Gemini assistance running on the watch. If those demonstrations feel fluid the processor debate may fade. If they stutter the conversation will return to that familiar Qualcomm part and the decision to stick with it one more year.
