Ofcom has moved forward with a plan to open the upper 6GHz band for both WiFi and mobile services. The decision breaks from traditional exclusive allocations. It sets the stage for devices to pull data at higher speeds while preparing the ground for 6G deployments expected around 2030.

Under the framework the lower 160MHz slice from 6425MHz to 6585MHz receives priority for WiFi. The upper 540MHz from 6585MHz to 7125MHz gains designation as mobile priority. Yet WiFi gains access there too until mobile operators begin heavy use. This hybrid model changes the equation.

The mechanism relies on automated frequency coordination. Think of it as a digital traffic controller for radio waves. An AFC database checks real-time conditions before granting a WiFi access point permission to transmit on certain channels. If mobile activity ramps up the system steers WiFi elsewhere. And it does so without forcing mobile operators to wait until the entire slice sits idle.

Consumers won’t notice the coordination algorithms humming in the background. They will notice the difference when downloads finish faster and calls drop less often. That gap between invisible infrastructure and visible improvement defines regulatory craft at its best.

Ofcom’s move stands as pragmatic engineering applied to policy. It rejects false choices between technologies. Instead it builds a system where both can prosper. The upper 6GHz band becomes a shared resource managed by software rather than fenced off by decree. Results will emerge over years. But the foundation now exists.
