Copper. Other elements absorbed from the exact spot where the nugget formed. Federal police forensics expert Gustavo Geiser compares the process to reading DNA. One mismatched signature and a shipment that claims legal origins suddenly points to a protected forest or Indigenous territory.

The technique has operated since 2019. Brazilian universities helped refine it. Instruments include X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and laser ablation mass spectrometry. Samples arrive from raids across the country. The lab matches them against a growing database. The goal stays simple. “Where did this gold come from?” Geiser asked in an interview reported by Fortune.

Answers matter. Criminal networks launder illegally mined gold into legal supply chains. They exploit mining permits granted to small-scale operators. On paper the output looks clean. Satellite images tell another story. No activity at the permitted site. Heavy equipment tearing through neighboring Indigenous lands instead. Prosecutors call these ghost-mine schemes. A federal court in Para state ordered tighter controls this month. The National Mining Agency faces a lawsuit seeking better oversight. Prosecutor André Porreca described the permits as fronts “to launder gold extracted by criminal organizations from Indigenous territories and protected areas,” according to the Associated Press.

Scale shocks. Amazon Mining Watch tracks nearly 496,000 hectares of rainforest cleared for mining since 2023. More than 223,000 of those hectares sit inside Brazil. MapBiomas data shows over 90 percent of the country’s mining occurs in the Amazon region. Almost 40 percent qualifies as illegal and sits in protected zones. The Washington Post highlighted how this activity threatens both the forest and the people who depend on it.

Mercury makes the damage permanent. Miners use the toxic metal to separate gold from sediment. Waste flows into rivers. Fish absorb it. A Fiocruz study found 21.3 percent of Amazonian market fish exceed World Health Organization safety limits. Children ages two to four sometimes consume mercury at 31 times the recommended maximum. The contamination hits Indigenous communities hardest. Yet the practice continues because gold prices have surged. Higher rewards draw more operators willing to break the rules.

Brazil signed the Minamata Convention on Mercury years ago. The Ministry of Mines and Energy released a draft plan this month to phase out the substance. Public debate runs through Aug. 7. Federal prosecutors push for direct consultation with Indigenous groups before final decisions. Geiser notes that any mercury trace in a sample already flags illegal activity. A full ban would sharpen the forensic edge even further. “It will make it even clearer that any mining using mercury is illegal,” he told reporters.

The lab’s work stretches beyond Brazil’s borders. Criminals shifted laundering routes to Venezuela, French Guiana and Suriname. Foreign samples now reach Brasilia. They feed the same database. Regional cooperation grew through the Amazon International Police Cooperation Center based in Manaus. Shared intelligence helps track networks that treat borders as mere suggestions.

Earlier efforts laid groundwork. A program called Ouro Alvo began collecting samples in 2019. Police built a reference library known as Ouroteca. Chemical fingerprints from legal and illegal sites filled the system. One early success involved 35 kilograms of gold seized at Manaus airport. Analysis tied it directly to Yanomami territory. The Mongabay report on that initiative showed how the database turned suspicion into evidence.

Critics argue the approach still faces limits. No public tally exists for convictions linked to the lab. Paper records remain easy to falsify. A 2021 academic study estimated that between 2019 and 2020 roughly 28 percent of Brazil’s gold output showed irregularities. Four percent carried clear signs of illegal origin. The socio-environmental costs ran into billions of dollars. Most of the tainted metal flowed through just a handful of buyers and processors.

Geiser sees the forensic database as one pillar among many. It cannot replace stronger permitting or real-time satellite enforcement. Yet it adds credibility when gold enters financial reserves or international markets. “Being able to state that it has a legitimate origin and therefore is valid for inclusion in a country’s or a bank’s financial reserves provides solidity not only to the market but also to the countries’ financial bonds,” he explained to Fortune.

Environmental groups press for more. Greenpeace mapped the ghost-mine pattern in a May report. The Federal Court of Accounts warned last year that permits were being abused at industrial scale. Courts now demand end-to-end traceability from mine face to refinery. The pressure coincides with global demands for clean supply chains. Banks and jewelers want proof their gold carries no deforestation or human-rights stains.

Success will hinge on integration. Fingerprint data must link with fiscal records, satellite alerts and permit databases. Electronic invoicing rules introduced in recent years help. Still, sophisticated operators adapt. They mix legal and illegal batches. They ship through neighboring countries. The lab’s database must keep expanding. New reference samples from every mining zone become essential.

And the stakes rise each year. The Amazon stores vast carbon. Its rivers feed millions. Mercury lingers for decades. Every hectare stripped for illegal pits compounds the loss. Forensic science alone cannot reforest those scars. It can, however, shrink the economic incentive. When buyers know authorities can trace a bar back to its exact illegal source, the market for tainted gold shrinks. Prices for clean material may rise. Compliance costs increase. But the alternative leaves the rainforest poorer and its people sicker.

Geiser’s team keeps adding samples. The vessels multiply. Each new data point sharpens the tool. Criminals keep testing it. Courts keep demanding results. The cat-and-mouse game plays out in laboratories and jungles alike. For now the fingerprinting system stands as Brazil’s most precise answer to a problem measured in tons of gold, hectares of lost forest and generations exposed to poison.
