Framework Computer has spent years proving that laptops need not become electronic waste after a few seasons of use. Its latest release, the Framework Laptop 13 Pro, pushes that idea further than ever. A full redesign brings a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, a larger battery, faster memory, and Intel’s newest processors. The result feels closer to a MacBook Pro than any prior Framework model. Yet the price has climbed sharply. Industry watchers now question whether the promise of longevity can overcome the immediate sticker shock.

The review unit tested by Phoronix arrived on the same day its embargo lifted, July 27, 2026. Michael Larabel put the system through Linux-focused benchmarks on Ubuntu 26.04 with a 7.0 kernel. Everything worked without issue. The Panther Lake SoC, Arc B390 graphics, new display, and haptic touchpad all functioned as expected. One quirk surfaced with a third-party 150-watt USB-C charger. The processor locked to roughly 6 watts and refused to boost. Switching to Framework’s official adapter fixed the behavior. A future firmware update may resolve the incompatibility.

That single hiccup aside, the hardware impressed. The chassis uses 6063 aluminum and weighs 1.4 kilograms in its thinnest configuration. It measures the same as the previous 13-inch model yet feels far more solid. Open-source CAD files remain available for those who want to print or modify parts. The hinge improved enough that one-handed opening now feels possible, though not quite Apple-smooth. A new haptic trackpad draws direct comparisons to MacBook implementations. Audio and the 2.8K 120-hertz touchscreen also received upgrades. Brightness reaches 700 nits in typical use.

Memory marks one of the biggest internal changes. The Laptop 13 Pro adopts LPCAMM2 modules rated at 7467 MT/s. Configurations range from 16 GB to 64 GB. These modules promise better power efficiency and easier upgrades than soldered LPDDR. In practice the shift helps battery life. Framework claims up to 20 hours of light use. Real-world tests back that up. Ars Technica measured more than 18 hours in the PCMark 10 Modern Office workload at 200 nits. An older 61 Wh battery paired with the new board delivered about 15 hours and 45 minutes. The previous Ryzen AI configuration managed only 8.5 hours with the smaller cell. The jump comes mostly from the processor and memory efficiency, not raw capacity alone.

Performance sits in a sensible middle ground. The tested Intel Core Ultra X7 358H holds sustained limits around 30 watts on the CPU side and 25 watts in balanced mode. That keeps temperatures reasonable. The single-fan design can still grow warm during heavy loads, a point noted by Tom’s Hardware. GPU output from the Arc B390 proves adequate for Linux desktop work, light content creation, and modest gaming. It trails higher-power AMD Ryzen AI 300 laptops in multi-threaded compilation but excels in efficiency. Battery life on the same chassis with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 reached 11 hours in Ars Technica’s tests, a clear step up from earlier models yet still behind the Intel configuration.

Repairability remains the star feature. Nearly every component swaps without special tools. Motherboards drop in from older Framework 13 units. The new display kit, battery, and many expansion cards carry forward. Owners can turn a retired mainboard into a mini PC. This modularity influenced the wider market. Lenovo’s recent Space Frame design for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon owes a debt to Framework’s approach. PCMag called the assembled Laptop 13 Pro a “MacBook rival you can tear down to the studs.” Once put together, the seams disappear. The device feels like a single premium piece rather than a collection of modules.

Pricing tells a more complicated story. The base DIY edition starts at $1,199. That figure excludes memory, storage, ports, and operating system. A fully equipped test model with the X7 358H, 32 GB of LPCAMM2, 1 TB SSD, and Windows reached $2,932 at Framework’s store. Pre-built versions add another few hundred dollars. Memory prices have doubled in recent months because of component shortages. A 32 GB LPCAMM2 stick lists for $800 directly from Framework. Similar modules cost roughly $700 elsewhere. Those figures make the total far higher than a comparably specced Dell XPS 14 or Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Joe Osborne at PCMag noted the laptop works better as a statement about what remains possible in modular design than as an everyday purchase for most users. The Dell XPS 14 kept Editors’ Choice in the category by offering more raw power for less money. Framework counters that its machine lasts longer and generates less waste. Existing owners benefit most. They can drop in the new motherboard and battery while reusing the rest of their investment. New buyers face the full hit of today’s elevated component costs.

Linux support stands out as a bright spot. Both Phoronix and Ars Technica reported smooth experiences across Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch. Firmware updates flow through LVFS and fwupd. The NPU, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6 all operate without proprietary blobs in recent kernels. That combination appeals to developers and privacy-focused users who want flagship hardware without vendor lock-in.

Still, compromises exist. The webcam earns only passing marks. Some port modules and older batteries prove incompatible with the newest board. The single-fan cooling limits peak performance compared with thicker gaming or workstation machines. And the memory price surge feels especially painful in a product built on the idea of affordable upgrades.

Framework announced the 13 Pro back in April. By July the first units reached reviewers and early customers. The timing coincides with broader conversations about right to repair and electronics longevity. Regulators in Europe and several U.S. states continue to push manufacturers toward modular designs. Framework has turned that pressure into a business. Whether the economics hold as memory prices fluctuate will decide if the 13 Pro becomes a niche success or a broader influence.

Competitors have taken notice. Several traditional laptop makers now advertise repairability scores and user-replaceable parts. None match Framework’s depth. The company publishes full schematics, sells individual screws, and maintains an active community forum. That transparency builds loyalty even when the price gives pause.

So the Laptop 13 Pro lands as both a technical win and a pricing challenge. Battery life has taken a meaningful step forward. The chassis finally matches the premium feel long promised. Upgrade paths remain open for years ahead. But at nearly $3,000 for a loaded configuration, the value equation grows harder to justify for buyers without existing Framework parts. For those already inside the ecosystem, the new board and battery represent the best upgrade yet. For everyone else, the decision comes down to how much they value longevity over immediate cost. The hardware makes a strong case. The bill makes a tougher one.
