Apps break. Stability suffers. Work grinds to a halt. So they look for a way out. The path back to macOS Tahoe isn’t simple. It demands complete erasure of the startup disk. One wrong step and data vanishes for good.

Those positives don’t matter if the beta renders a key application unusable. Or if battery drain spikes unexpectedly. Or if corporate management tools refuse to run. That’s when rollback talk begins. Apple never made downgrading easy on Apple silicon. Unlike Intel Macs that once accepted a simple Time Machine restore, M-series machines require a full erase. The secure enclave and hardware-bound keys complicate matters further. So users who installed the developer beta in June or the public build in July now face a stark choice.

First step. Create a full Time Machine backup. But don’t stop there. The newest backup likely contains files and databases modified by Golden Gate. Tahoe may not read them correctly. Copy any documents edited since the upgrade to an external drive. Verify those files open properly in their original applications. Confirm iCloud syncing has completed. Others report broken menu bar utilities or sluggish external display performance during early builds. One recent thread highlighted how the beta broke a popular menu bar hiding tool until native functionality replaced it.
