Electronic door handles on Tesla vehicles promised sleek design and better aerodynamics. They delivered that and more. Yet those same handles have left drivers and passengers unable to escape crashes. Fires followed. Lives ended. Now federal regulators are moving toward rules that could reshape vehicle exits for every automaker.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration granted a petition from a Silicon Valley engineer last week. It will start the long process of creating standards for obvious, reliable door egress systems across all new motor vehicles. The decision follows years of complaints, lawsuits and at least a dozen fatal incidents tied to Tesla models. The Orange County Register reported the development on July 23, 2026.
Kevin Clouse filed the petition in November 2025. He survived a head-on collision in his 2022 Tesla Model 3. The car lost all electrical power and caught fire. Electronic handles went dead. “The emergency egress controls for the mechanical door release are not readily accessible and clearly identifiable,” the petition stated. NHTSA denied a formal defect investigation into that specific claim. But agency officials saw enough evidence to pursue broader rulemaking. The process typically stretches two to five years. Any final rule might not take effect until 2030 or later.
Tesla’s approach dates to the Model S launch in 2012. Flush handles extend when needed. They retract for clean lines. The design cut drag and noise. It also tied door operation to the car’s 12-volt battery. Lose that power in a crash and the primary mechanism fails. Manual releases exist. Tesla has faced widening federal scrutiny. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation in September 2025 into roughly 174,000 Model Y vehicles from the 2021 model year. Tesla built its reputation on pushing boundaries. Its doors reflected that ethos. They minimized mass, reduced complexity in normal use and looked futuristic. In emergencies they sometimes left people with seconds that stretched into eternity. Regulators finally appear ready to close that gap. The question is whether the rules arrive before more incidents add to the toll.
