Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite promised to shake up the laptop market. ARM-based power efficiency paired with strong performance sounded ideal for Windows machines. Yet when Michael Larabel of Phoronix installed Ubuntu 26.04 on an Acer Swift 14 AI laptop powered by the chip, the results fell short once more.

The review, published today, details a series of regressions. Hardware support that worked in earlier Ubuntu versions now fails in basic ways. Battery monitoring doesn’t function. The GPU refuses to accelerate graphics. And simple installation steps break without workarounds. This isn’t the smooth Linux adoption many hoped for.

But first, some context. Last year, Linux on Snapdragon X Elite already lagged behind AMD Ryzen AI and Intel Core Ultra systems. Performance had slipped. Issues piled up. The March preview on the same Acer hardware flagged new problems during Ubuntu 26.04 development. Phoronix reported in March that qcom-firmware-extract threw an error: “Device is currently not supported.” That tool had recognized the laptop for a year prior.

Installation itself went okay. Larabel booted the ARM64 desktop ISO. He kept the Windows 11 partition intact. Most Snapdragon laptops still require it. Vendors must supply firmware files from that side. Only a few models from Lenovo and Dell have upstreamed those binaries into linux-firmware for a cleaner experience.

After install, the real trouble started. The bundled qcom-firmware-extract version 17 refused the Acer. Version 20 from the 26.10 archives fixed detection. Firmware copied over. Reboot followed. Then disappointment hit. The MSM DRM driver loaded files but hit errors initializing the Adreno GPU hardware. Linux 7.0, shipped with Ubuntu 26.04, triggered failures where older kernels succeeded.

Graphics fell back to LLVMpipe software rendering. Slow. Inefficient. No 3D acceleration. The Canonical X1E Concept PPA offered a customized kernel. That led to a gray screen after GDM login. Multiple boots. Various tweaks. Nothing resolved it. The generic kernel became the only usable path. With its own compromises.

Battery status failed to report too. Earlier builds sometimes shut down randomly under load from thermal or power glitches. That didn’t occur this time. A small mercy. Still, the overall picture looks grim. “The Snapdragon X Elite Linux experience at least for this Acer Swift 14 AI laptop remains a very frustrating experience,” Larabel wrote. Each Ubuntu test over the past year brings fresh regressions.

Over 160 benchmarks ran on Ubuntu 26.04 with Linux 7.0. The Snapdragon X1 Elite CPU showed competitive results in some areas. Yet it trailed modern AMD and Intel laptops in most workloads. No match for the latest Ryzen AI or Core Ultra chips on the same distro. Raw numbers confirmed what users suspected. Efficiency gains from ARM didn’t overcome driver gaps and software hurdles.

Canonical has pushed ARM64 improvements. Ubuntu 26.04 marks the first LTS with official Snapdragon X Elite focus. The discourse post from July 6 details progress. Ubuntu Discourse notes Secure Boot support via a new EFI stub called stubble. It embeds device trees directly. No extra trust chains needed. Live kernel patching for arm64 arrived in June too. ARM64 packages moved from Ports to the main archive.

Work continues on Snapdragon X2 Elite as well. Google brought Chrome to Linux ARM64. The Snap ecosystem matures for apps. A July 6 Phoronix article highlights these steps toward making Ubuntu on ARM64 “truly a first-class citizen.” Community resources grew. An FAQ on Snapdragon X Elite installation now spans nearly 300 posts.

Yet real-world testing tells another story. The Acer Swift 14 AI exposes gaps. Other laptops fare better. ThinkPad T14s with Snapdragon X Elite enjoys fuller support. Lenovo upstreamed firmware. Some users on X report solid experiences with Fedora or Ubuntu on specific models. One developer helped craft early devicetrees for ASUS Vivobook. Basic functionality arrived after months of effort.

Even so, audio often stays silent. Cameras lag. Backlight controls fail on certain configs. Battery life drops well below Windows levels. Reddit threads echo these complaints. One post noted sound and backlight issues alongside shorter runtime compared to the Windows partition.

TUXEDO Computers dropped plans for a Snapdragon X1 laptop last year. The headaches proved too much. That decision looks smart now. Vendors hesitate. Linux enthusiasts want options. Qualcomm’s platform holds potential for thin, efficient machines. But without polished drivers and consistent firmware, adoption stalls.

Kernel development moves fast. Newer HWE kernels recommended on sites like Ubuntu.Fan show rapid gains. Support improves with each release. Ubuntu 26.04 users should try the latest HWE where possible. Yet the July 24 review shows current LTS falls short for daily driving on this hardware.

Community efforts fill voids. Device trees get upstreamed. Firmware extraction tools evolve. Canonical maintains the X1E PPA, though outdated by April in some variants. Miracles could still arrive before point releases. Linux 7.0 updates might address MSM DRM errors. GPU initialization could stabilize.

For now, expectations need tempering. Developers and testers push forward. Insiders track Phoronix benchmarks closely. They compare numbers across architectures. The Snapdragon holds its own in select CPU tests. GPU and peripheral support drags everything down. Power management remains incomplete.

Buyers face choices. Stick with AMD or Intel for reliable Ubuntu experiences. Or gamble on Snapdragon for efficiency and accept tinkering. Some models work better than others. Lenovo and Dell lead. Acer requires extra steps. Future X2 chips may build on lessons learned.

The gap persists. Windows on ARM delivers what Linux struggles to match here. Battery monitoring. Full hardware acceleration. Stable drivers. These aren’t luxuries. They define usability. Until Linux catches up in consistency, Snapdragon X Elite stays niche for open-source users.

And that frustrates many. The promise was clear. Efficient ARM laptops running Linux without compromise. Reality shows otherwise. Regressions from one release to the next. Firmware dances. Kernel incompatibilities. Still, progress ticks along. Discourse threads grow. Patches land. One day the experience may match the hype. For Ubuntu 26.04 on Snapdragon X Elite today? It doesn’t. Not yet.
