Ford and Apple just tightened their long-running bond. The two companies announced on July 23 that Apple Maps will power navigation inside Ford’s upcoming affordable electric vehicles. No iPhone required. The software will run natively on the dashboard screens and feed directly into the car’s systems.
This marks a step beyond the familiar CarPlay interface that millions of drivers already know. Apple Maps will handle traffic updates, destination searches, EV-specific route planning and battery preconditioning. It can even trigger location-aware actions such as opening a garage door when the vehicle pulls into the driveway. The features arrive first on a yet-unveiled midsize electric pickup truck priced around $30,000. Production begins in 2027.
But the arrangement reaches further. Ford’s Latitude AI unit will pull high-definition road data from Apple Maps to train and refine its next-generation hands-free driving software. The goal is a system that carries drivers from highway on-ramp to off-ramp without interruption. A Ford representative told Business Insider the partnership aims “to make advanced technology simple, useful, and intuitive in our customers’ everyday lives.”
Jim Farley, Ford’s chief executive, struck a similar tone in a post that day. “Technology is at its best when it feels simple, intuitive and genuinely useful,” he wrote. “That’s the idea behind our new midsize electric vehicle, the first on our Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. To give @Ford customers the ultimate driving experience, we’re proud to be working with…” The tweet cut off there, yet the message landed. Ford wants its future EVs to feel approachable rather than exotic.
The announcement lands at a telling moment. Ford has dialed back ambitious electric-vehicle targets in recent years. It canceled plans for several large EVs while shifting focus to smaller, lower-cost models that might actually sell in volume. The Universal Electric Vehicle platform, or UEV, sits at the center of that pivot. The first vehicle off the line will be that $30,000 pickup. Subsequent models will follow.
Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, laid out the company’s broader technology philosophy in a detailed post published days earlier. Field joined Ford in 2021 after years at Apple and Tesla. His perspective carries weight. “Autonomy shouldn’t be a premium feature,” he wrote on Ford’s corporate site. “By designing our own software and hardware in-house, we’ve found a way to make this technology more affordable.”
Field described a unified “vehicle brain,” a single powerful module that combines infotainment, advanced driver assistance, audio and networking. The design cuts the module’s size nearly in half while boosting performance. Ford claims the in-house approach delivers 30 percent lower cost than buying equivalent systems from suppliers. That math matters when the target price sits at $30,000.
The autonomy roadmap is explicit. New hardware and software roll out on the UEV platform in 2027. Hands-free BlueCruise capability comes first. Then, in 2028, Level 3 eyes-off driving becomes available. Drivers will be able to take their eyes off the road under certain highway conditions. Ford already operates 1.2 million BlueCruise-equipped vehicles and uses real-world data to improve the system. The next version builds on that foundation but adds the richer mapping layer from Apple.
An earlier update shows the companies have been expanding their CarPlay collaboration. The move stands in contrast to choices made by other automakers. General Motors has stepped away from CarPlay in its newer electric vehicles. Chief Executive Mary Barra has signaled plans to phase out both CarPlay and Android Auto across the lineup in favor of GM’s own interface and Google software. The company now highlights its software and subscription revenue as a high-margin business.
Tesla and Rivian take a different approach. Both largely control their central screens and operating systems. Rivian offers a native Apple Music app and Apple Key support. Tesla allows its vehicle app to run on the Apple Watch. Neither opens the dashboard fully to Apple’s mapping or interface.
Ford is betting the middle path pays off. It keeps CarPlay for customers who want it. It adds native Apple Maps for those who do not carry an iPhone. And it taps Apple’s mapping data to sharpen its own autonomous systems. The strategy lets Ford focus internal resources on the vehicle brain, zonal architecture and cost reduction rather than recreating high-definition maps from scratch.
Analysts have noted the pressure on legacy automakers to deliver compelling software without the losses that pure EV startups have endured. Ford’s decision to partner rather than compete on every front reflects that reality. The company canceled several large EV programs after demand softened. It now pins hopes on the UEV family and the technology layered inside it.
Field’s CES appearance in January 2026 reinforced the message. He spoke about democratizing advanced features. Eyes-off capability in 2028 on an affordable truck would represent real progress if Ford hits the marks. Many industry observers remain skeptical that Level 3 systems can reach volume production at low cost so quickly. Regulatory approval, liability questions and edge-case performance all loom large.
Still, the Apple partnership provides Ford with credible mapping intelligence at scale. Apple has invested heavily in its Maps product for years. The data now flows into Ford’s Latitude AI team, which develops the underlying autonomy stack independently. Ford owns the driving policy and decision-making.
