The tracking relies on automatic content recognition, or ACR. This technology takes snapshots of whatever appears on screen. Streaming shows. Live broadcasts. Console games. Even material fed through HDMI ports. It creates a digital fingerprint. Matches it against vast databases. Then sends identifiers to manufacturers and third parties. All by design.

Proton laid out the mechanics in a recent explainer. The company tested popular models. Data flows regardless of opt-out toggles in many cases. Manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense and Vizio no longer sell non-smart versions to consumers. The business model depends on connection. And on the information that flows from it. But the situation has grown more urgent. In late 2025, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued five major TV makers. The complaint accused them of using hidden ACR to spy on residents.
