Apple has begun testing a second-generation version of its budget MacBook Neo laptop. The device currently sells with an A18 Pro processor and 8GB of RAM. The upcoming model swaps in the A19 Pro chip and doubles the memory to 12GB.

That change matters. The extra RAM and faster silicon should better handle on-device AI tasks that the first version struggled with. But the move also reflects broader pressure on Apple to keep its low-cost lineup competitive as rivals push cheaper Windows machines with stronger specs.

Hardware Gains Meet AI Demands

The upgrades come from testing data reviewed by people familiar with the plans. According to Bloomberg, the refreshed Neo will use the same A19 Pro found in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air. Memory jumps to 12GB. Apple also plans to add more color choices beyond the current Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo options.

Yet the story runs deeper. This Neo update forms one piece of a sweeping Mac overhaul. Apple intends to refresh every model in its computer range over the next 18 months. High-end MacBook Pro units will gain OLED displays and touchscreens for the first time. MacBook Air follows early next year. Even the Mac mini, Mac Studio and iMac will receive new processors.

Mark Gurman, who first reported the details, noted that Apple sees these changes as necessary to support advanced AI features across its devices. “The Cupertino giant is developing an updated version of the MacBook Neo that will reportedly move beyond the current model’s A18 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM,” he wrote. The company launched the original Neo earlier this year at $599 before raising the price to $699.

Component shortages could push prices higher still. Suppliers face tight capacity for the new chips and displays. And demand for AI-capable hardware continues to climb. So Apple must balance cost controls with performance gains that satisfy both consumers and enterprise buyers.

Recent reports add fresh context. Mac mini and Mac Studio will also launch new models.” The observation aligns closely with Gurman’s reporting.

Analysts watch the pricing strategy carefully. The original Neo already sits at a point where many buyers compare it directly to Windows laptops costing $500 or less. Doubling the RAM helps close that gap on paper. Yet if the street price climbs above $750, the value proposition shifts. Apple has raised hardware prices multiple times in the past 18 months to offset memory and component costs.

Performance data from early prototypes remains limited. Still, the A19 Pro brings architectural improvements over the A18 Pro, including better neural engine throughput. Combined with 12GB of unified memory, the system should run Apple Intelligence features without constant cloud reliance. That matters for users in regions with poor connectivity or strict data policies.

Supply chain sources tell a more complicated tale. One person with knowledge of production plans said yields on the A19 series have improved but remain below target. Display suppliers for future OLED models face even tighter constraints. These bottlenecks explain why Apple spreads the refresh across 18 months rather than launching everything at once.

The MacBook Neo itself targets a specific buyer. Students. Small business owners. Casual users who want macOS without the premium price. The first version succeeded in winning some of those customers away from Chromebooks. The second version must retain them as AI becomes table stakes.

Software plays a role too. macOS updates expected later this year will lean more heavily on on-device processing. Without sufficient RAM, many features get disabled or throttled. The 12GB bump gives Apple room to expand those capabilities without forcing users to buy higher-tier models.

Competitive dynamics add urgency. Qualcomm continues to improve its Snapdragon X series for Windows laptops. Those chips now deliver strong battery life and AI acceleration at lower prices. Microsoft pushes Copilot features that run best on hardware with at least 16GB of RAM. Apple cannot afford to fall behind in perception.

So the Neo refresh represents both defense and offense. It protects the entry point into the Mac lineup. At the same time it signals that even budget devices will carry meaningful AI hardware going forward.

Exact timing remains unclear. Apple has not commented publicly. History suggests an announcement could come as early as October alongside new iPads or as late as next spring. The company often reveals Mac updates at dedicated events rather than tying them to iPhone launches.

Color options could prove decisive in the consumer market. The existing palette already stands out from traditional silver and space gray MacBooks. Additional hues might attract younger buyers and help the Neo stand out on retail shelves.

Longer term, the entire Mac range moves toward OLED. That technology promises better contrast, lower power consumption and thinner designs. But it also raises costs. The Neo may not see OLED until 2028, according to current projections. Until then it will rely on proven LCD panels that keep the price accessible.

Industry watchers expect Apple to maintain strict control over which AI features run locally versus in the cloud. The extra 4GB of RAM on the new Neo gives engineers more flexibility in that decision. It also reduces the chance that users will experience slowdowns when multiple AI tasks run simultaneously.

Enterprise adoption could follow. Many companies hesitate to deploy Macs at scale because of cost. A capable machine under $700 changes the math. If the second-generation Neo delivers on performance promises, IT departments may reconsider their Windows-only policies.

The broader Mac refresh also includes updates to the M-series chips for professional workloads. While the Neo uses A-series silicon for cost reasons, the Pro models will receive next-generation M chips with even more cores and higher memory bandwidth. Investors watch these transitions closely. Apple stock has reacted positively to past Mac updates that expanded the addressable market. The combination of AI features and lower entry prices could drive another wave of upgrades from users holding older Intel-based systems.

Challenges remain. Production ramp-up for the A19 Pro must happen smoothly. Any delay ripples across the iPhone lineup as well since the chip serves both product families. Apple has managed similar shared-component strategies before but never at this scale of AI demand.

Early user reactions on X show mixed feelings. Some praise the memory increase. Others worry about the price creep. One recent listing offered a first-generation Neo for resale at a discount, suggesting some early buyers already seek to upgrade.

Apple has not released official benchmarks. Third-party tests of the current model showed solid everyday performance but limitations in sustained AI workloads. The new configuration should address those weaknesses directly.

The company continues to iterate quickly. From the first Neo launch to this refresh spans less than a year. That pace indicates confidence in the product’s direction and a willingness to adjust based on real-world feedback.

Whether the second-generation model hits the sweet spot on price and performance will determine its success. For now the signs point to meaningful improvements that address the most common criticisms. And that alone could be enough to keep the Neo viable in an increasingly crowded market.
