Linus Torvalds dropped Linux 7.2-rc5 on Sunday. The release candidate lands amid a development cycle that shows few signs of slowing. Developers continue to hammer out fixes even as summer vacations pull some contributors away. And the volume of changes? It stands out.

This marks the fifth weekly candidate since the merge window closed in late June. Phoronix reported that the update brings a wide array of bug fixes. Many surfaced through AI and large language model agents scanning the code base. Torvalds himself described the release as quite a massive -rc5. He pointed to networking work that had built up after conference distractions the prior week.

“It’s Sunday afternoon, and once more we have quite a massive -rc5. The same thing happened in 7.1, so part of it is just the ‘new normal’. But I think this time the bigger part of it is that the networking tree ended up having some pent up work from the previous week due to conference distractions.” So said Torvalds in his announcement email. Over a third of the patches touch networking. Most concentrate on drivers. USB changes outnumber those for GPUs this time around. Sound, tty, block and firewire drivers see activity too.

The list does not stop at hardware support. Tooling updates hit selftests and perf. Filesystem patches address smb and btrfs. Rust code, architecture-specific fixes and documentation tweaks round out the batch. Nothing jumps out as strange or scary. Still, the size gives Torvalds pause. He prefers smaller, calmer candidates at this stage.

One notable correction resolves an issue in IEEE-1394 Firewire IPv4 networking. That bug had lingered in the mainline kernel since 2009. Its removal highlights how long-standing edge cases still appear. Audio fixes also appear across the board. They reflect what Torvalds now calls the new normal. Quirky hardware and improved testing tools drive many of these discoveries.

Earlier in the cycle the kernel crossed 43 million lines of code. LinuxTeck noted that Linux 7.2-rc1, released June 28, already reflected contributions from more than 200 subsystem maintainers. The project removed obsolete drivers and landed a PCIe fix that had caused problems since 2023. Hardening and security updates formed part of that initial wave.

By rc4 the pace had settled into a steady rhythm. OSTechNix covered the July 19 release. Torvalds observed that changes remained higher than expected despite vacations. He labeled the situation the new normal for the kernel project. That pattern carried into rc5.

VirtualBox developers already track the series. Version 7.2.14 of the hypervisor added initial support for Linux 7.2 kernels. 9to5Linux detailed improvements for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 and 9.9 guests as well. Such early adoption by virtualization tools signals confidence that major regressions stay in check.

Yet not every change moves smoothly. The deprecation of AF_ALG in an earlier 7.x release created fallout for disk encryption users. Cryptsetup 2.8.7 shipped recently to address compatibility breaks. Phoronix explained that the removal happened quickly in the name of reducing attack surface. The adjustment forced updates to tools that relied on the crypto interface.

Torvalds has voiced frustration with exaggerated claims about artificial intelligence in software. At the Open Source Summit he pushed back against assertions that 99 percent of code comes from AI. He acknowledged a 20 percent rise in submissions tied to AI assistance but stressed human oversight remains essential. The rc5 fixes generated by LLM agents illustrate the practical role these tools now play. They find bugs. They do not replace maintainers.

Looking ahead, the stable 7.2 kernel is slated for release around August 16. That gives three more weekly candidates for testing. Distributions on rolling schedules will adopt it quickly. Fixed-release platforms such as Fedora and Ubuntu will incorporate it into point updates or next major versions. Early signs point to solid hardware support gains. AMD EPYC systems and Intel Panther Lake graphics both show measurable improvements under 7.2, according to benchmarks run on previous release candidates.

The kernel’s growth continues. More than 108,000 source files now make up the tree. Actual code lines exceed 33 million. These numbers reflect steady expansion in drivers, filesystems and architecture ports. Rust integration advances in small increments. Architecture fixes target newer CPU features and edge platforms. Documentation updates keep pace with code changes.

But. The size of rc5 serves as a reminder. Even in a mature project, surprises surface late. Networking patches that waited for post-conference review swelled the total. Driver work across disparate subsystems added breadth. The result feels larger than ideal this deep into the cycle. Still, Torvalds sees no red flags. Testing continues. Feedback from users running the candidates will shape the final bits.

So the community watches. Server operators test storage and network performance. Desktop users check audio and graphics stability. Embedded developers verify architecture patches. Each group finds different value in the release. The collective effort keeps the kernel moving forward. One rc at a time.
