Visa Buys Online Payment Platform For $190 Million

Visa said today it is buying online payment platform PlaySpan for $190 million in cash, “plus additional consideration for performance milestones.”

Visa Visa said the acquisition complements its further expansion into digital and mobile commerce.  The deal follows Visa’s purchase of another online payment company, CyberSource in July.

Will the mobile phone replace the credit card? It sounds a bit like science fiction, but it appears that mobile carriers are trying to make it a reality.

Bloomberg reports that AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile USA are "planning a venture to displace credit and debit cards with smartphones". The companies would work with Discover Financial Services and Barclays Plc to test a system starting in Atlanta and three other unnamed U.S. cities.

Visa will provide Children International, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization, up to $50,000 toward the purchase of books to be placed in Children’s International’s nearly 100 libraries serving children in 11 countries.

Visa Buys CyberSource For $2 Billion

Visa said today it has agreed to buy online payment processing firm CyberSource in an effort to strengthen its ecommerce business.

Visa said it will pay $26 a share or about $2 billion for CyberSource. The deal is expected to close in Visa’s fiscal fourth quarter. The transaction will dilute Visa’s earning for that quarter by about 4 or 5 cents a share.
